The HfP chat thread – Friday 30th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/30/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-30th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Small tidbit, my OH got Wheely £50 Amex offer after 2 rides. She created a new account and requested a ride right then, that results in 2 transactions on the card (One for £12 and another for any charge above it). The next ride triggered the offer.

HSBC Premier question. What constitutes an investment? Can I open any ISA and bang £100 in it or does in need a monthly amount added? Does it need to be a stocks & shares ISA to qualify? Any advice/experience of this greatly appreciated. Many thanks 👍

    • memesweeper says:

Life insurance is another option. Need not be expensive. Mucking about with investing is too much hassle for me.

    • Genghis says:

      Former. Can be a GIA.

    • Mouse says:

I have about $4k in a money market fund within the stocks and shares ISA, so steady 1% income, essentially zero risk and all the Premier benefits.

    • the_real_a says:

Premier is a negotiation. I explained i wasn’t going to transfer money in from another bank on standard HSBC rates, but would be happy to do this after Premier was processed. This was processed.

      • Jimbob says:

Agreed, I don’t think they are too bothered by the investment part, as long as income meets minimum criteria.
I’ve never held any HSBC investment products, and had no problems applying

        • MD says:

Agree Jimbob. Had the initial meeting and income exceeds the criteria by a factor of whatever, got the account and credit card no problem, and they’ve never raised the need to invest anything with them since then.

    • Matthew says:

Perfect. Will just go on income for now then and see what they say. Thanks all for your replies.

      • Polly says:

It should be enough, but you will probably have to have the face to face meeting to open the account. Don’t bother with the elite for now, if not travelling.

  • Jay says:

The BA you can change your flight but must pay a fare different rule, is it fare difference flat out, or only if the same fare class isn’t available? E.g., If I pay £500 for for a flight in fare bucket N, but need to change the flight to another day that still has fare bucket N selling, but for £600, would I need to pay a £100 fare difference, or am I ok because I have a ticket in the same fare bucket?

    • Andrew says:

I think it’s just whatever the current ticket price is minus whatever you paid for the one you want to change from. I know some airlines so the fare bucket calculation but BA are a bit tighter than that usually.

    • ChrisC says:

N is specific rules for the fare NOT a specific cash amount. So if the N fare is £100 more then yes you have to pay because this is a change instigated by you

  • Murray says:

Amex Platinum cardholders, has anyone else received the Harrods offer since the first batch of arrivals last Saturday? I know it was reported that we should all get the offer but as of yet, I haven’t had anything.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Didn’t think it was live till November 2nd?

    • Mouse says:

I haven’t had any communication. Will try it out next week regardless and see what happens.

    • Andrew says:

Brighton confirmed to me that it was for all Platinum members (primary only) and read out the T&Cs – so as the call is recorded by them I’m taking that as verbal contact. It was slightly odd that a few people were written to in the post, 10 days before the offer was even to go live. I’m guessing come Monday morning it will show up in the offers tab as usual.

  • Crafty says:

Would be lovely if someone with a “clean” recent record could contact Barclaycard and enquire after our Hilton Honors points. I don’t want to do so myself at the moment for reasons I’m sure you all understand.

    • The Urbanite says:

They will come eventually! The “extra” points were over 2 weeks late last month but they did show up!
