The HfP chat thread – Sunday 25th October

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/25/the-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-25th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

does anyone have a feel for how far ahead BA are cancelling flights ? I’m hoping mine to Geneva on Boxing day is cancelled but nothing yet. I know they did a load this week as when I called in to sort out a flight for next summer the agent was saying they were really busy due to a load of cancellations going out.

    • Stu N says:

They seem to do the bulk of next month’s cancellation and adjustments in week three of previous month. I’d expect Dec changes in third week of November.

      • Jane says:

thanks, that’s good to know. will keep fingers crossed ours is one to go (not something I ever thought I’d be saying!)

    • Chrism20 says:

I had a domestic for November 7th cancelled yesterday

  • Nigel says:

I think I read a comment a while ago that upgrading from BA amex to BAPP didn’t work online any more? Is this still correct or is online working now?

  • KBuffett says:

Does anyone know possible reasons why I don’t receive any M&S Sparks offers in my app? Friends and family seem to be receiving quite a few recently and I’ve had zero.

Also, are the points actually worth anything? I don’t actually understand M&S and John Lewis loyalty schemes.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Thought sparks dropped the “points” which was really just process towards unlocking more offers etc

Both scheme reward loyalty with exclusive offers, money off or competitions rather than points in exchange for anything.

      • Andrew says:

Yes Sparks dropped points in the summer with the relaunch. I’ve had a few £5 off a £40 food spend and some 50p off things I normally buy coupons.

    • Andrew says:

Have you checked your marketing preferences and personal details?

      My current M&S offers are:-

50p off when you spend £3 on M&S Frozen sides
50p off an M&S Frozen dessert
£1 off when you spend £7 on M&S Frozen Party Food
      20% off Men’s Jumpers & Cardigans
      20% off men’s T-shirts & Polo shirts
20% off men’s casual trousers and chinos
20% off men’s bags and accesories
      Free pasty from in-store bakery.

      • ChrisC says:

My latest offer that I used (others were for clothes) was a free bag of percy or colin.

  • pinperl says:

Hi, Anyone know what the current rules are for Qatar airways for retaining status?
Thinking of flying with BA and crediting to Qatar?

  • babyg says:

Does anybody know if the AMEX Hilton offers (spend £200 get £50 back) work on hotels NOT on the list, currently in Seychelles so deciding if i should split the bill across my AmEx(es) – or pay on a more currency friendly card.

  • Henry says:

I just searched an Avios reward trip LON-FRA, on BA next week, economy return. I expected it to be 8000 avios (4000×2). Instead it was 17000, which is ridiculous for such a short trip to Germany. The dates are marked “off peak.” Why is it 17000? Can I get it for 8000?

    • Rob says:

It shows as 17 + £1 I imagine. Click through and the old rate + £17.50 will be another option.

  • Nick_G says:

    @Nick_C
Signed up for Metro Bank current account switch using your referral code on Friday.
    Thanks mate. Cheers.

    • Nick_G says:

Anyone else looking to switch a spare current account and earn a quick and easy £50 could use my referral code: GSPBN4ZK
      Cheers. TIA

    • Nick_C says:

@Nick_G – many, many thanks. I’ll buy you a virtual drink at the virtual HfP Xmas Party!

Just to reiterate the conditions for getting the bonus:-

      1) Pay in £500 in each of the first two months
      2) Switch a spare account to Metro once yours is opened (You can usually just open a second account with whoever you currently bank with – or switch your main current account if you really want to.)
      3) Make 10 debit card payments in the first two months. For example, pay your credit card in weekly instalments, or make small cash deposits to NS&I, Yorkshire BS, Skipton BS Cambridge BS, or Post Office Money.

  • Hotelier says:

Hi! Looking at upgrading my BA blue card to BAPP to trigger voucher as close to £10k spend. Does anyone know if they continue to give the ”secret” 6000 avios for upgrading?
Partner got them last year without asking and when reading online most information goes back to before 2016.
