The HfP chat thread – Saturday 24th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/24/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-24th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • joe says:

Been told by Amex CS that Business cards can no long do any referrals. Anyone else had this too?

  • Jill (Kinkell) says:

@LL: thanks. We flew down from Inverness for a 3 night break. Should have been heading to South America for a month, but as we know…..!
Booked via Emyr on a Hilton 3/2. The hotel is convenient for our tourist trips on Sunday. Today was meeting our son and spending the day.
I fully intend on seeing manager before we leave.

  • Lady London says:

I turned down the opportunity i more than one year to be the featured ‘first customer into the sale’ at Harrods. What can I say… I was young. But I became quite an expert in what is where at what price in Harrods over a number of years.

@KBuffet and those agreeing with him are absolutely right Harrods is the most genuine of all the sales. You will find items there which you wont find discounted anywhere else in a million years.

On a regular daily basis Rob is absolutely right there can be a very slight difference on a few items mainly fashion but it’s a question of what environment you want to buy in and what service you want to receive. Most items are whatever you would pay elsewhere and a few are even cheaper.

Before I became a shopper I also worked there.

If anyone wants a few tips on the Harrods sale, see me at one of the HfP parties. Oh, wait…

    • Andrew says:

And Harrods are putting all their sale items at their outlet shop in Westfield for time being, but hopefully a return to sales in Knightsbridge by next summer maybe because you’re right, always a good deal and the 10% weekend or nominated 10% days for higher tier rewards members can be stacked with the sale prices.

    • Anna says:

I took a very large tin of Harrods biscuits to the welcome BBQ on holiday a couple of years ago (guests had to supply dessert). The other guests were all American and most impressed by this quintessentially British offering and one lady asked if she could keep the tin (which I was happy for her to do). They were from the sale as well so a bargain way to ingratiate onself with one’s fellow travellers!

      • Anna says:

If you ever wonder why we take so much luggage, it’s because I pack things like a kilo of biscuits 🤣

        • Cat says:

          🤣

        • Lady London says:

Good camouflage for what you bring back, too. Otherwise there would be sticky questions about how did one suitcase on the way out become three on the way back.

          • mvcvz says:

I never require so-called “camouflage”, as I never knowingly engage in dishonest activity.

          • Lady London says:

Uh? simply that if you have a shopping habit ….

          • Lady London says:

…no point in provoking sticky questions from your partner unnecessarily at some times 🙂

  • r* says:

Is the harrods amex offer only being sent by letter or should it be saved to card like usual? I can’t find it on my card.

    • Andrew says:

Bit confusing – I rang them to check and I think it might be a bit like Addison Lee – it’s there on your card but not listed in your offers. But they didn’t seem overly clear. The redemption window doesn’t start until 2nd November so possibly it will load to the offers list then.

    • Lady London says:

I have a feeling it may be only a ‘hard copy’ offer. As on the former Amex shopping evenings at Harrods, I think the tills are set up to automatically discount any Amex payment between the programmed days/hours.

As another poster has said it sounds like the store themselves will be picking up at least half of the discount you receive.

      • Andrew says:

How would the tills know your had reached your £100 limit of free credit? And this one is online and in store.

  • Crafty says:

Can anyone help me with a really simple but infuriating issue I am having? Where in the Amex website can I find a breakdown of my Membership Rewards earning? I feel like I have clicked everywhere. There are many options for how to redeem my points, but I can’t for the life of me see how to check on my earning, transaction by transaction. I know this used to exist and must still!

    • Andrew says:

On the app – click membership at the bottom and then view activity and explore rewards.

      • Crafty says:

Yes this has been my workaround for months – however for more than a week now I am told “The system is not responding” when I attempt this.
