Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Saturday 24th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/24/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-24th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Booking Bonvoy reward stay for December, Category 8 so 100k point per night… Conditions state:

You may cancel your reservation for no charge before 11:59 PM local hotel time on November 6, 2020 (30 day[s] before arrival). Please note that we will assess a fee if you must cancel after this deadline. If you have made a prepayment, we will retain all or part of your prepayment. If not, we will charge your credit card.

Anyone know if there is any flexibility with this due to Covid-19? Travelling to Dubai so a lot could change within the 30 days before our stay!

I don’t see that they can charge you a fee without telling you what it is beforehand! But sometimes you can remove your credit card details form your account.

      • meta says:

They can keep the points though, so you’d lose that.

        • Anna says:

Would they though? Points being returned to your account might be a separate process, it doesn’t say you will forfeit the points, just that a fee will be assessed, which is incredibly vague!

just cancel now. rebook when u have greater clarity, doubt reward will go in these conditions

I’m guessing Al-Maha. Pop over to the Marriott forum on flyertalk as there is recent discussion about this.

I posted recently about refunds on an avios redemption on which I had already also purchased a proactive online upgrade. Agent advised that refund would have to be processed manually so its still in the queue and can take some weeks to action. Finally spoke with a helpful agent yesterday who was able to calculate the refund amount I should get back and it will be the full amount paid (inc the POUG cost) less £35. He did however offer an alternative which is receive Avios back instead of the cash refund. The Avios amount offered would be around 52k instead of £400 due for refund. Sent an email outlining this too so I can get back to him if I want to proceed.

I am about 14000 points short on IHG to hit Spire but have the Black IHG card – aiming to put £7000 or so through by the end of the year… can I spend with Ernie (via Curve?) to do so? Will there be a charge? Any other suggestions that don’t charge also welcomed.

I am sure the answer is in the comments somewhere on the site, but after some searching, I still can’t find it – sorry!

Does the 5 nights for 4 on redemptions at Hilton apply to all hotels at all times? I’ve got silver status, and am trying to book a 5 night redemption at a hotel, but its just showing me the full 5 night amount of points.
    Thanks

    • meta says:

You might be booking premium room. Even standard rooms can sometimes be classed as premium during peak periods.

    • the_real_a says:

Did you take it through to the final page at checkout? The grid shows “X points per night for 5 nights” but you only get charged for 4 on the confirmation screen.

    • Olly says:

I don’t think it applies to Silver, only Gold and Platinum.

Anyone had problems with HMRC / curve 3D security in the past 2 days? I approve the transaction in the app, but then the web page just stalls and doesn’t complete

  • Alan says:

    Hi,
I have to pay a large CGT bill in January. Does anyone know if there is any way of paying this via a Amex CC and getting points.
