The HfP chat thread – Thursday 22nd October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/22/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-22nd-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone having problems logging in to FT with the cookie selection hanging?

    • Mike says:

I’ve had issues with it as there’s two pop up boxes with the cookie one over the op of the first, if I manage to clear the first one then the cookie window works ok. If I don’t make it in time, refresh, try again.

Can someone help me understand why the cash portion of an Avios redemption for an infant is pricing higher when using a 241 voucher?

    LHR-TJS in J, 2 pax 1 infant:
    ‘Classic’ RFS price: 3.4k + £5.90
    With 241: 3.4k + £27.11

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

      (TFS, sorry!)

      • Anna says:

With the 241 you only get the RFS price, whereas without it you get a variety of cash options – but of course that doesn’t explain why the avios required is the same (but 3.4k doesn’t sound like the right RFS avios price for TFS?)

        • Charlieface says:

17,000 each way x2 and infant pays 10% so total 3,400 for infant.

Do infants get RFS at all? I don’t know.
Looking at ITA Matrix it seems £27.11 is the correct full taxes net of base fare. Not sure where £5.90 comes from.

          • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

£5.90 is what the infant prices up at if I book without the 241

    • ChrisC says:

You should have a look at the detailed fare breakdown to identify which element or elements have changed.

Can I add a return segment on a ticket booked using BA companion voucher after booking the outbound ticket? If yes, please can someone guide how to do this online.

    • Jonathan says:

You need to have enough Avios to book at full price then call up & they will refund half the Avios but leave taxes & fees as if 2 one ways (better for Japan & Hong Kong, worse for USA). Otherwise you need to call & they will book return leg on phone with taxes & fees corrected as if it was a return booking.

There’s no way to do it fully online.

      • Nick_G says:

Thank you very much mate. This is very valuable information.
        Cheers.

        • C says:

Doesn’t always work like this. They insisted on amending the outbound to a return and recalculated the taxes for me last week.

ALL – VISA Pulse card intended for Millenials, an ALL- VISA Explorer card for customers with high personal or professional mobility and, finally, an ALL-VISA Ultimate card intended for super-premium customers.

Sounds like it’ll possibly be more than just points back (so really € back) and perhaps some status or other perks thrown in.

  • Baresi says:

Evening all, I am planning on booking flights LHR-OSL-DOH-BKK
I will fly BA on the LHR-OSL leg and Qatar Airways on the OSL-DOH-BKK legs. Do BA through check-in my bags to my final destination at BKK? even when booked using separate tickets…..
    Cheers 👍

    • TGLoyalty says:

Only when booking on a single ticket. Qatar will on the way back.

    • ChrisC says:

On separate tickets (i.e ticket 1 = LHR-OSL and Ticket 2 = OSL-DOH-BKK) BA will only tag bags as far as OSL where you will need to collect them at baggage claim and then check them in with QR so hopefully you’ve left / will leave sufficient slack between flights for you to do that and meet the QR check in close time.

Is it worth visiting (if possible?) the T5 Plaza Premium lounge early Sunday morning before a 7am flight? i.e. have they got a decent breakfast selection? Buffet or table service? Got a few Dragonpass credits but won’t waste them unless there’s a decent offering! Heading to GIB as a family of 4… never been so excited to be getting on a plane!!
