The HfP chat thread – Friday 16th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/16/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-16th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

5,000 MR retention offer from calling Amex Gold. Can’t remember what others were quoting here… Better than nothing I suppose

    • Flying Misfit says:

for all those getting the 5,000 retention offers, is this for Gold Credit or have some received the offer for Gold Charge (those who may still have one from yesteryear or have downgraded from Plat)?

      • stevenhp1987 says:

        Mine was Gold Credit.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Tends to be gold credit card. Not sure youd get it for the charge card as it is a discontinued product

      • Sina says:

I got 6000 MR points and X3 points on all purchases for 3 months, – Gold Charge card.

  • BuildTheWall says:

Gold card (or any premium card) – how long do we have to wait since getting it before applying a supplementary card for the bonus points?

    • Aston100 says:

I’ve done it as soon as the physical card arrived through the post (for the main card holder).

  • BP says:

If I pay Ernie using Bendy with the Elite card from the world’s biggest bank. Can I expect to pay interest or other fees?

    • Jonathan says:

Not sure of the specifics mentioned but in general I wouldn’t play those games with HSBC. They’re quite trigger happy if they get any whiff of game playing.

      • Blenz101 says:

Agreed. Let’s assume you mean HSBC. In which case, danger. The Premier account account and associated cards come with your own personal banker who will be looking over your account (albeit with a view to sell you something). If you play games here expect to be shut down and potentially have trouble in the future opening other accounts if HSBC flag you.

They are highly risk averse at the moment and your suggested activity either to game them of points or what they may see if repeated as laundering is not going to end well.

      • BP says:

Good to know. I’ll start small with them and build up. Maybe my initial £7k investment was a bit much but they have given me a £30k credit limit. That’s a lot of avios to be had.

    • Genghis says:

Biggest? Not sure what JPM (by market cap) / ICBC (by BS size) card you’re using? 🙂

    • Nigel says:

Ive never had issues with the bank in question!

  • John W says:

Best Annual Travel insurance with Covid included please ! – My sainsburys policy is due for renewal and they do not cover everything , Thanks in Advance !

    • Aston100 says:

I’ve heard people talking about trailfinders.

    • Michael C says:

Staysure tend to be generally sound.

      • Jill (Kinkell) says:

I completed on line form. Got a quote ,but didn’t take it forward. Then next day, email from Staysure offering 15% off quote and extending extra 3 months to January 2022. Still ploughing through fine details of current insurance ….again!

        • meta says:

I’ve looked at all policies. None of them offer a comprehensive covid cover. Some offer medical covid cover, but exclude cancellation. Some other way round. Until this is over for European trips, I won’t be taking any insurance. Rather I am going to rely on EHIC (have it even after Brexit due to dual nationality) and booking everything fully refundable or with small fees. For long-haul if we are allowed to travel where I want to go, I will be taking medical cover one only and book everything refundable.

          • Sukes says:

Hi Meta I completely agree that insurance now being sold postCovid seems pretty worthless and too risky to rely on. I was interested in your comment about dual nationality as EHIC eligibility is based not on citizenship but country of residence. Without prying into your circumstances….can you explain how your EHIC is continuing? Of course I am assuming you are UK resident but I could be wholly wrong. Cheers

  • Ilga says:

Does anyone know if the Virgin Atlantic Rewards+ deal (double points on all Virgin Atlantic/Virgin Holiday spend until the end of October) covers the points booster?

    • dezbez says:

Don’t think so as that’s run by a third party apparently, so won’t register

  • Craig says:

Anyone else ever had all the offers disappear from Amex, maybe just a short-term glitch?

  • Fred S says:

Curve: had an email requesting info on my business as I have the business curve card or otherwise they’re saying they’ll issue a personal curve card. What’s the difference between the 2? Is the business version better?

    • Pid says:

No difference as far as I can tell. They did the same to me a few months ago.

  • Boi says:

For those who have used transferwise and pay by credit card is it treated as cash or purchase?
