The HfP chat thread – Friday 16th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/16/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-16th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Creation (white card) 10K bonus – got it in my March 2020 statement. Was it 6 months then I can close it? Are you guys closing your card, or keeping it open, unsure what to do. Obviously keeping the black card 🙂

    • Benilyn says:

      I meant Creation IHG card*

    • Genghis says:

Total 20k bonus? 6 months, yes. I closed mine late last month having had it 6 months. I’ve plenty of other credit cards.

      • Benilyn says:

Yes got 20k sorry, the second 10k didn’t show up in my statements (maybe because I stopped using the card so stopped receiving statements), had to double check in my IHG account

    • James. says:

Is the IHG White card worth recycling every 6 months for the stab of 20k points in 12 months?

Spend £10k on your black card through MS and you get the same points.

  • James says:

Does anyone know if the Selfridge offer on Amex plat spend £150 for £30 credit has to be spent all at once?

    • Benilyn says:

I don’t think so, but not sure tbh. Just buy some Selfridges gift cards if you shop there regularly anyway to make sure you hit it straight away 🙂

      • Martin says:

Hi, does anyone know if I can get a cash refund on BA flights if quarantine both ends is in force please? It’s Iceland and due to the Government advising against non essential travel I believe I am, but wondered if anyone else had tried this before I tried myself? I fly on the 25th and was waiting for them to cancel but it’s getting close now. One way is Avios which is fine as I’m happy with what to do there but the other is cash due to no Avios flights being available. I want a cash refund as when I re book I’m hoping to get Avios flights both ways. Thanks all

    • Stanley says:

Yes it does. it didnt trigger for me using 2 transactions to go over £150…. go buy a £150 gift card instore if u need to make 2 purchases.

  • James says:

Ive all ready spent £109 may try another purchase and see if it works

  • s879 says:

Rob, do we know the winner of the Malaysia competition yet? 🙂

  • YH says:

I’ve just had a flight downgraded from First to Club Suites on the outbound leg of an upcoming trip. I understand if I call up I can request 75% of the Avios back for that leg.

Would I be able to ask to retain access to First wing and CCR?

    • Anna says:

Technically no, although as I recall they allowed TripRep to use the Concorde lounge when he was downgraded from J to PE. Though that was after they pooped on him from a great height at check in!

      • YH says:

Thanks for the info. In the end I called up and moved the flights by a day to get my F seating back.

  • Optimus Prime says:

British Airways fined £20m for data breach.

    • Lloyd says:

Interesting that the first action was a compromised Swissport account from Trinidad & Tobago that the attackers then used to exploit access to other BA systems.
Seems the attacker then went searching through various systems and stumbled across a System Admin account that contained the user / bank information of the compromised accounts. Supposedly the file was not held for any business purpose other than a testing feature, but for whatever reason was left activated when the systems went live. It was only limited to three months worth of data as the logged file was limited to 95 days worth of data.

There was then also a period where the attacker redirected payments to a different website which skimmed the data of live bookings for a period of 15 days. 500k affected customers. Seems like a third party informed BA of what was happening and it was then when action was taken.

  • Anna says:

Damn, looks like our greedy councillors have sold us into Tier 3 status for 30 pieces of government silver 😡. I was hoping Andy “Braveheart” Burnham would save the entire North West. I don’t even live somewhere where you can have a nice local stay in a posh hotel with a loyalty scheme.

    • Coucou says:

Public health > your stay at posh hotel or holidays.

      • Anna says:

Your evidence that UK hotel stays with your household has been responsible for Covid transmission?

        • Anna says:

I don’t work and rarely leave the house for other reasons at the moment. I am without doubt a lower risk to anyone than many people living in Tier 1 areas.

          • Louise K says:

I’m in the same boat as you Anna. We are both at home all day we don’t allow visitors in the house, go out daily to walk our dogs, have not been in a pub / restaurant for weeks. Aiming to have a couple of days in York soon but who knows if that will go ahead either.

    • ChrisC says:

      Greedy councillors? How so.

The government can just impose these measures if it wants to but it likes local buy in because it means they can share the blame!

    • James. says:

The tier system is fabricated. The whole of London is Tier 2. I live in a SE borough that statistically has the lowest infection rate in the whole of London. I actually have a Kent post code and can be in a Tier 1 location in 5 minutes but we have been “grouped” with the rest of London all because North London has high infection rate. I am closer to Bluewater than North London.
