The HfP chat thread – Friday 16th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/16/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-16th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Rob says:

Does anyone know if I can book a Hilton for my son using my points (or do I need to there as well)?

    • Rob says:

Yes, it’s fine. Book for 2 people, add his name as 2nd guest and put in the notes: ‘Reward night gifted to XXXX who will check in’.

      • Mr. AC says:

Is this the same for other hotel chains or it’s just Hilton that’s ok with this? Specifically interested in IHG.

        • Genghis says:

IHG fine. Can do same thing or call call centre who will put booking fully in the persons name (IIRC important for Spain).

        • Rob says:

Always works unless there is a law which insists the registered guest stays. I once had big issues in Spain when I booked a room off my Mum’s points. That said, Anika pretended to be my wife checking into bookings I made on a couple of occasions in Spain with no issue.

  • Baji Nahid says:

Im stuck and need some help. How do I pay with Amex for these haha.

    1) Paying £800 card insurance for someone with Amex, all okay
    2) Need to pay £!65 road tax for that someone, but dont take amex on the UK gov website
    3) Buying a machine for £127 on tefal website, but as they state they take amex, the website is not configured to take amex payments and you cant pay with paypal

Any ideas how i could possibly get around all of these hurdles, appreciate all the help!

    • Baji Nahid says:

£165 for road tax sorry and the tefal website doesn’t have a paypal option.

    • Nick_C says:

You can pay the “road tax” (Vehicle Tax) at a Post Office with an Amex. I don’t know if all POs take Amex, but a lot of Sub POs do.

      • Travel Strong says:

This never works for me, machine rejected it at a couple of sub-PO’s. Take amex for the post transactions, transaction fails with tax.

        • stevenhp1987 says:

I paid my Vehicle Tax back in July at a Post Office with an Amex no problem.

    • Nick_C says:

The only problem I could see on the Tefal website is you need to remove the slash from the expiry date. But of course I didn’t try to confirm my dummy purchase.

It seems set up for Amex payments, prompting you for a 4 char CVC.

Maybe try again. Or a find a different retailer for the product (who is likely to be cheaper!)

  • Jimbob says:

Creation app down again, that’s two nights on the trot.

I would complain, except the source of my infinite IHG points.

    • Ryan says:

      Here here, +1

Am tempted to but can only see that talking to the… *wonderful* help centre will not only be tough but also unlikely to get much more than a couple of 1000 points? But in turn raise some eyebrows

  • Chris says:

How is $100 USD hotel converted into GBP? Is it current spot rate?

    • Harry T says:

In my experience, the hotel decides a standard conversion that they always use. In mainland Europe, most hotels decide that it’s 85 euros (one gave me 90 euros). I haven’t actually got any experience of this offer in the UK, sorry.

    • Anthony says:

For us, most hotels we’ve stayed at give either £75 or £80

    • Lady London says:

hotels generally convert at a ripoff rate.
