Good £95 deal at Marriott’s The Dixon hotel in London

  I was at the Dixon at the weekend. Our Executive King Room was “upgraded” (and a Gold Bonvoy member) to a “nice spacious room”…. that had a view of a wall about 1 foot from the window. They had added some big brass leaves to the wall to break up the monotony, but still, there was very little natural light and it was disappointing. When I mentioned it at checkout I was told lots of people like that room because it’s big, but of course having only seen one room I have no idea what the average size is.

  Breakfast was also disappointing. You pre-order at check-in and advise what time you want breakfast. There was 4 tables in when we arrived at Provisioners, with one person in the kitchen and one person serving. Coffees were good and arrived quickly. The full English was overcooked bacon that was lukewarm, an undercooked hash brown that was lukewarm, a tablespoon of beans that had barely seen a pan or microwave, eggs that were somewhere between an omelette and scrambled (wavy eggs?), a roasted tomato, and a sausage that was actually hot! I don’t want to be insulting to either establishment, but I think we’d have got a better breakfast at the Wetherspoons just down the road.

  I’m willing to give them a bit of pass on the breakfast due to coronavirus, but it really wasn’t good enough considering the quality of the rest of the hotel, and we didn’t bother having breakfast in the hotel on our second morning despite it being part of the room rate.

  Annoyingly, at check-in when they asked for a card for incidentals I used Creation (rather than my Marriott card), and I’ve noticed it has been charged for the full stay, so I’ve missed out on my £50 back from the Amex promo and points. I called them about swapping cards for payment (admittedly this is entirely my fault and they should not have to rectify it), but no response as yet.

    COVID is no excuse for a poor breakfast. Rake’s at the Andaz last week was knock-out, both in terms of food & service.

    I stayed last year and can echo the sentiment about the “view” from the room. And like I said below the rooms are “cosy”

    The rates are always very low though even in pre covid times you could pay £130 for entry room booking a week or two in advance.

    However, really surprised about the food as it was very good when I had breakfast and lunch there. The restaurant is well liked local brunch spot too so something has obviously gone on with covid.

    I had the same issue with a Crowne Plaza this summer (in fairness it was a prepaid rate that had not yet been charged to my card). They then put parking and incidentals through as direct charges, rather than through the room folio. I initially missed out on the IHG points for the non-room charges, including a 2x points promo; I had to request retro credit (which IHG Rewards quickly sorted).

    On the case of the breakfast, it isnt advertised but you can ask for extras, I combined the continental with some eggs and bacon from the english. they also have cereal etc. Just have to ask them

      No such luck, I got a response that they can only charge me using the card that was used for chip and pin at check-in. It’s my own fault so I don’t blame them at all.

  Re: Opodo – agreed they are hopeless. Airline cancelled a flight, said I had to deal with the agent, agent said I had to deal with the airline. Chargeback (or more likely S 75) appears to have been successful.

  As for LH points expiring, I had the old M&M credit card and when it was withdrawn was left trying to spend a few thousand points. bought one of my kids a toy plane, but the remaining points are still active on the account. That must have been 2 years back now.

  I’ve been in one of the cosy rooms at the Dixon . It was a work trip and the lack of a desk was an issue for me. Otherwise a lovely boutiquey place — if the area suits, book it. For a few tens of pounds a night more the Autograph at Bankside is a good alternative on the south bank if you need a desk.

  Another warning for Opodo – needed urgent assistance with a rebooking when the sh*t was hitting the fan and we were in Thailand with family in March – they said they’d get ticketing to call me back – they finally got in touch in June! Thankfully being a savvy traveller I’d pushed the airline to reticket , otherwise they might still be there…

    That’s their card for the French market. Different issuer and I believe you need a French address to apply.
