The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 14th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/14/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-14th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone have the UK number for Bonvoy? Need to move some points between accounts.

    (I know it’s a FAQ but can’t find it when I need it….)

  • Aston100 says:

Sorry to ask as it has probably been discussed before but I’m not able to find clear & specific info.
I booked a return flight with avios for me and one other.
I don’t want to travel on that date anymore. It’s at Easter 2021.
I’m not quite sure how a FTV would work here. If say I want to travel in October 2021 or Easter 2022 instead, does there need to be reward seat availability?
Will I be charged £70 for taking the FTV?

I’m looking for a way to postpone the travel, with minimal penalty. The destination is fine, it’s just the dates I am uncomfortable with right now. Want to move to a much later school holiday at end of 2021 or into 2022.
Sorry, I’m sure this has been covered, but can’t find it.

    Thanks.

    • IG says:

Cancel pay 35 each and get all back.

Take FTV and no fee. FTV has whatever you paid for the booking

In both cases book a new holiday as usual and all usual restriction apply

Just my 2c but someone correct me if wrong

      • Anna says:

That’s how I understand it. If BA cancels and you want to move dates, they can rebook you without avios availability, but if you take a FTV there then needs to be award availability for your new booking. So it’s a gamble depending on how popular/well served your destination is.

      • D says:

If the taxes or Avios for a new booking made with an FTV are less then the original, are you refunded with the difference?

      • Aston100 says:

        Thanks IG and Anna.
OK, so if I take a FTV, there is no penalty up front.
Now if I want to apply it for say the same dates but a year later (when the flights become available of course) would the ‘system’ remember that I had used only half the avios for that route? (this was booked during the recent 50% off reward bookings sale) and would I then be prompted to find additional avios?

        Sorry, never done this before.
        Thanks.

        • IG says:

Treat the FTV as cash / avios. I don’t think the existing booking factors into it. Unless you are talking about 2 for 1?

Basically you can book as you would normally (assume forget that you have an FTV) but use the FTV as part of the payment.

  • BuildTheWall says:

Anyone done HL > bendy > hsbc? Had to do it as creative wasn’t playing well with bendy.

    • mr_jetlag says:

Yep works but may be charged interest (no fee) – as long as you keep a 0 balance on HSBC should be all fine

    • Grant says:

I cannot seem to get bendy to work with HL at all. Doesn’t matter what card I pair with it.

      • Spk says:

have you typed in your full name? not the name on the card, even though HL prompts so. HL website weirdly rejects any card if you dont enter your full name.

    • Ali M says:

      whats Bendy, lol

  • mr_jetlag says:

Lounge Key removed from No1 Lounges – probably not a surprise given PP also removed. No1 offering “significantly reduced” entry of £20pp – LOL.

  • Rui N. says:

Someone the other day commented having been charged interest for IHG+Curve into Ernie. Anyone else with the same experience? Just to be safe I paid my IHG balance and I’m not doing any more deposits until my statement ends, but wanted to know if everyone else had the same experience.
Also, where do you see on the IHG statement if you have been charged interest?

    • the_real_a says:

There have been some changes this month for sure, no-one really knows whats going on. There are some aspects to my account this month that makes me think interest will be charged. But need to wait until statement date to be sure.

      • Aston100 says:

Not according to the convo I had with Creation yesterday.
My Sandy bondies were on an mcc not liable for a charge.

    • Jimbob says:

No charges on my credit card statement 4 days ago

  • Chris Heyes says:

Anna don’t know if you’ve found it but on Donald Russel site
an offer is on (if you put “tv” in search a special offer pops up steak selection for £29.99 should be £50)
it’s easy to work out how to order more than one (different orders)
i just made each order up to £40 to get £10 off each card pus 5

    • TGLoyalty says:

Must be the first time in years I haven’t got this AMEX offer on any card!

      • TGLoyalty says:

Turns out I was t looking hard enough. First £40 order placed. Valid for a while so should get a few more in.

    • Anna says:

Yes I’ve had that offer, and ordered my entire Xmas dinner! Got £30 of free meat from offers on 3 cards, both freezers now full 😂

      • xcalx says:

Had a look at the Xmas dinner offer, however I will wait for small shops for the £5 off £10 across a number of cards and give the business to trusted local butchers.

    • Nick_C says:

Thanks for that Chris. For new customers, there’s the alternative of 16.5% from the site that dare not speak its name.

  • Baji Nahid says:

Hi guys! I upgraded to the BAPP card from the free BA AMEX. However all my offers disappeared from my BA AMEX 😭 The loss of the MAC offer makes me wanna cry, girls cant have too much makeup!

However the question is now, once upgraded. Im gonna do a £20 spend and hit the 10K! Can i use this card for a few months then downgrade back to the BA AMEX. I really appreciate all the help you guys give ❤️

    • TGLoyalty says:

The offers will reappear in a few days

and yeah you can downgrade in the future as long as AMEX approve it

    • Harry T says:

Your offers will reappear. This happened to me recently when I received a replacement Platinum card. TG advised me to wait and he was right.

    • Baji Nahid says:

Thank you guys @TG @Harry been life savers!

    • Harry T says:

Unenforceable and will inevitably be seen as political, but I can see the public health rationale.

      • Anna says:

I agree it will be very difficult for it to be officially enforced, however some people we know were on holiday in Wales at the start of lockdown in March and they received a visit from some local people who ordered them to leave their accommodation and go back to England – though in less polite terms!

      • Ken says:

It’s clearly enforceable to some extent as people from Liverpool & Manchester were turned back from Cumbria & North Wales last time.
Add to the fact that this policy is very popular with the population in Wales, I won’t be going walking in Snowdonia or the Lakes at the moment – it’s both irresponsible & I doubt I’m welcome.

        • Anna says:

? It’s never been unlawful to travel to Cumbria, though I take the point about general responsibility.

        • Charlieface says:

Not sure what’s irresponsible about taking an isolated walk up a Cambrian mountain.

The whole thing is complete hyperbole
