The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 14th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/14/the-hfp-chat-thread-wednesday-14th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Booked two one way tickets last night, LHR-HND with 2-4-1, and HND-LHR with half price avios. I then called to link them and get half avion back for the return leg, the agent linked the two booking but said nothing about return of avios! How long does the avios take to appear in my account?

    • Michael C says:

Hi Sina – I had a longggg chat trying to do this last night. First it was a few minutes of not possible etc., me saying I’d done it before, lady off to see supervisor for another 10 minutes. Finally, it was “as an exception, as you’re a good customer, we’ll do it”…. Bookings don’t seem to have been linked (mine are open-jaw), but Avios were indeed returned this morning.

      • BJ says:

I had similar issues about a month ago. Couldn’t decide whether they were just not clued in or were increasingly trying to be a pain about the practice.

      • Sina says:

Thanks Michael, managed to call them again and they said iy will credit after 48 hours, so let’s see?

    Questions about BA status extensions:

    1) I got downgraded to Blue for (October) 2019-2020 and have made Bronze again before October 2020 (but after the status extension announcement). My understanding was that the 1 year extension would apply, giving 2 and a bit years of Bronze. Re-reading the original article, it sounds like maybe that is not the case and I only get the standard 1 year until October 2021. However, early in the article it gives a very similar example: “I gained a new status in my current membership year, so I already have it for next year regardless. Do I get an additional extension? Yes.”. What is the difference between the two cases – the timing of the announcement vs the gaining of the status?

    2) For people who now have two and a bit years status, what is the incentive for them to fly with BA 2020-2021?

Last year there was an invitation running to get an Apple inspired UK credit card. I expressed interest and expected an application form to materialise at some point. Did it ever happen? Did anyone get one? It seems to Apple most failed delivery promise. (Samsung lovers may like to comment 🙂

    • Rhys says:

Apple inspired credit card? Do you mean the Apple Goldman Sachs card in the US? If so, it hasn’t been launched in the UK.

  • Brighton Belle says:

Yes, It was coming . . . . coming soon . . . etc and just disappeared into marketing spin and noise.

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Google Play Store has launched its reward scheme in the UK – not too exiting for me but might appeal to some. It’s a 1% rebate for more Play Store credit at the entry level. Opportunities to earn more on promotions, higher redemption values on specific games and multiple status tiers for high spenders.

  • Dave says:

Hey guys. I’ve recently triggered and received my 2-4-1 with BA Premium Plus.

I want to cancel that card now and start my 24 months recycle period (I have Gold Business to keep me going in the meantime) – am I definitely ok to do this and zero risk that I will lose the 2-4-1 voucher?

    • Anna says:

No-one has been confirmed to have lost a voucher yet by doing this. However, someone yesterday said that they cancelled their BAPP and now the 241 has disappeared from their BAEC account, so we could use an update from them!

    • Rhys says:

If it’s on your Executive Club account then yes, no problem. Although you may want to wait for the last remaining Avios to move over!

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

If you ring to cancel, theirs a fair chance you’ll get offered a retention bonus.

      • Aston100 says:

We only got offered an extra avios per pound. That said, theres still 6 months left on the BAPP.

    • Lady London says:

Does having the Gold Business mean your 24month break wont work?

      • The Streets says:

My guess is you would be entitled to a welcome bonus if you have only had the business card. It says the new Cardmember offer is only available if you have not held a personal American Express Card within the previous 24 months.

  • Robert says:

I’ve just made a large purchase on my AmEx to trigger companion voucher, but the transaction says pending. Will it still trigger the voucher?

    • Peter K says:

I’m not sure what you are asking. Is today the last day of your spend year?
Have you cancelled your card (is that even possible with a pending charge)?

      • Robert says:

Hi Peter thanks for your reply, not sure if anyone else has had a similar experience, my last day is today (14 Oct) and I was short of the 10k spend to trigger the voucher by around 4k so I’ve spent 4k yesterday to trigger it, and the transaction says pending. Really worried I’m not going to get it now.

      • Robert says:

It’s basically a question that if the transactions are classed as ‘pending’ do they still count towards the 10k spend.

        • Polly says:

The avios need to have converted from the charge to count, at least it was when we hit our final spend for the 241. Really need to count the days towards that final spend push. Usually try to have spent by 5-7 days before date, to given the spend a chance to have converted.

          • Nick says:

If necessary spend somewhere with a fast and frequent billing cycle to ensure it goes through quickly. Amazon top-ups (not sales) normally auth and settle on the same day, I think they even have a double daily batch process. Most companies take 1-5 days for the same.

          • Robert says:

Thanks for your advice, the payment is now cleared, it went to the wire! AmEx customer service confirmed that as long as the transaction took place before the year ended, then it gets accredited to the spend for that year. Sure enough my current year has started and it’s saying I need to spend 10k of 10k. Will log in to BA and check the vouchers arrived at the wkend.

Has everyone had the email about Lounge Club removing No.1 Lounges from their programme? Going to make it even harder for those of us without any status to get into lounges using that card now!
