Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 12th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/12/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-12th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Data point for Ambassador sign up/renewal free reward night offer, stayed at Kimpton Edinburgh this weekend having renewed using points last week. Free night appeared in my account this morning. Must be used by end of April 2021, but helped make ambassador worth it for this year at least!

    • Anna says:

I got mine 2 days after my stay at the Kimpton Manchester which cost £92 and was fabulous! I’ve used the certificate for our wedding anniversary weekend at the Kimpton Blythswood where the flexible rate is £165 for that night so a decent return.

      • Anna says:

Should say £265 for the Blythswood!

        • Wollhouse says:

I assume that the paid weekend night to qualify for the ambassador free night can’t be “paid” with points?.

          • Wollhouse says:

Found the t&c’s- not allowed. Must be cash booking for the first night. Thx

      • Alan Todd says:

Good return indeed! The Blythswood looks lovely though unfortunately the wife has a deep disinclination to Glasgow. May just have to go myself!

Must say Kimpton Charlotte Square was a mixed bag. Spacious room, tasty (though pricey if not prebooked) breakfast and pool area gorgeous. Service though a bit cool, communal areas a little dingy and no status recognition at all which at a time of low occupancy and decent rates at competing brands surprised me. Perhaps expectations were a little too high but left just a little deflated.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Sort of agree on the communal areas. You can tell it’s townhouses turned into a hotel very low ceilings etc but I wouldn’t describe them as dingy.

I was upgrade for my reward night to the same category as my 2-4-1 night but asked nicely and was given a junior suite for all 3 nights. Also given two drinks vouchers instead of one which were redeemed for two very good cocktails I would have paid for any way (£20 value there) plus I got the welcome points anyway.

          • Alan Todd says:

Seems you did a lot better than I did! Perhaps dingy was harsh, but certainly floors and paintwork were quite scuffed as you walked from reception to Baba. Minor things but as I said my expectations were quite high.

Obviously I was there just after the other resident of Charlotte Square announced her further restrictions on hospitality, so perhaps that had something to do with the cool atmosphere. I did ask about applying the “raid the bar” credit to room service as they were still supplying beverages to bedrooms, but just received a flat “no.”

I would probably return, the use of the pool after a day’s sight seeing was great, but if The George had a pool.. perhaps not.

I keep reading indications of an airbridge between London and New York for December. Does anyone think this is in anyway likely to happen?

  • cinereus says:

Like many I have ANA F flights booking with VS points in March. It’s looking like April is the earliest Japan is going to open up again. Is there any way to avoid paying the £30 cancellation fee so I can rebook later in the year given they probably won’t cancel until nearer the time and I don’t have enough points spare to have two live bookings at once.

Small print alert on Marriott status match: I have to do 15 nights to preserve my Platinum status (which ironically is almost exactly what I needed to do to earn it organically anyway) but in the small print I see

    • memesweeper says:

Homes and Villas by Marriott International are not eligible for credit

… which given those nights usually do ‘count’ for status is one to watch.

Back in the day when offices were a thing, I used to take my drive ornament onto the road and it needed lots of petrol which I got from Tesco and they gave me Avios in return. So where to people get their fuel Avios from if it’s not Tesco?

    • Blenz101 says:

The points on fuel were never especially generous. Asda is often more convenient if they offer drive thru.

  • William PH says:

Just realised that I haven’t stayed at a Hilton for nearly a year, and my 100k points are in danger of expiry. Are Hilton are extending the expiry for COVID or do I need to buy some points for cash or Virgin miles?

    • BJ says:

You don’t need to stay. Just go the easy route and buy 1000 points for $10. Given your account appears to have been inactive you might even get lucky and get a 5000 bonus for purchasing just 1000.

  • Nick says:

If anyone is interested Kaligo have just mailed me with a flash sale which ends Friday 2 x points/Miles on offer. I personally would not touch them/give them my business after an ‘Disaster’ with Hotel in Porto, spoilt the whole stay

  • Nick says:

Just found a flight I want to book in the Avios sale, after searching for days. But I was short on Avios, so I made a transfer from Amex MR points to BA Avios. Does anyone know how long does it take to transfer Amex MR Points to British Airways Avios?
    Thanks.

    • MinR says:

It took roughly 2 days for the transfer when I did it last week. My BAEC account was already linked in the Amex portal.

    • Rob says:

Should be overnight, 48 hours at most.

      • Nick says:

Thanks both. This was my first transfer to BAEC, so a bit worried. I will be praying to the IT Gods for a speedy transfer.
