Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 12th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/12/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-12th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Quick question please. Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Indigo Bath and got the £60 off £250 Amex offer to work?

    • MarcB says:

Stopped there this weekend and it hasn’t kicked in yet – suspect because it’s such a new hotel?

      • BJ says:

Any feedback on the hotel you can share please?

        • MarcB says:

Overall our stay was really good, but it’s clearly a brand new hotel & there’s a few teething problems. The room we were assigned was really unusual (and huge), split over two levels (with the bedroom downstairs!) in the centre part of the building – however was really noisy due to a slamming fire door nearby and then sprung a leak from the floorboards the next morning! We were promptly moved to another room at the far end of the building which, whilst smaller, was fantastic and much quieter. The key thing is every room seems to vary wildly (in size, shape & decor – there’s even some ‘garden’ rooms of some kind), so each experience is likely to differ.

    • Mr. AC says:

The hotel was not on the list of participating hotels. I asked Amex chat support, and they explicitly told me it won’t trigger. YMMV.

      • MarcB says:

Same for me – so frustrating…

        • Peter K says:

That’s what I wondered. I know I’ll spend at least £180 on F&B and wondered if it was worth stretching to £250.
If it does trigger please can you post it on here. Thank you.

Appreciate this is already a major news day for us HfPers and this is very minor relative to all that so may get lost.
But having recently received a Virgin upgrade voucher for spending £500 on my V+ card with Virgin Atlantic in the offer it is currently running, I’ve just had my statement and I have not received the 6x miles for this spend, only the usual 3x (I’ve got the V+ card). Anyone any ideas why?
Or do I just need to brace myself for a call with them….

  • BJ says:

Typewriters and telephones must be burning up at HfP Towers today … thanks for the news and offers 🙂

  • Princess says:

HI! Has anybody had luck using a e-voucher (only money) to pay a new avios booking?

    • Anna says:

Yes – back in April I used a voucher from a cancelled BA holidays booking to pay part of the taxes/fees on a new 241 booking. However, a few people have said on here recently that they’ve been told they can only use a cancelled holiday voucher for this, and not one from a cancelled flight. Sounds like nonsense to me but I didn’t actually check the Ts and Cs so can’t say for sure.

      • Princess says:

Hi Anna, thanks to reply. I checked the FAQ and it just say it can be use to pay for BA flights. I think their short statement is misleading, BA should be more transparent. I now checked the T&C and it say that can’t be use for avios booking. I now start to have too many different voucher/airlines credit. Any idea if I can tell BA to take back their voucher and ask insurance to cover for it? I took it because the destination went back into only essential travel advices, but flight still went head, so I think insurance should cover it.

        • Princess says:

sorry for the moaning today!!! I try to stay positive and keep booking trip, but with no much success 🙂 everything get cancelled!!!!!

    • Pierre says:

I asked to do this a few days ago – no luck! Was told that a FTV from a cash booking cannot be used towards paying the fees on a new avios booking.

  • David says:

    Hi,

Wanted to get the £100 credit from Small Hotels of the World.
My booking isn’t quite at the £350 mark though. Is the credit triggered on the final bill at the hotel, or the initial amount on the SLH site?

  • YC says:

With all the love platinum cards are getting – anyone else thinking of resigning up? Seems the annual fee is being paid for with all the offers. Obviously no guarantee more will come

    • BJ says:

      No 🙂

    • Andrew says:

And the latest £400 hotel one is only for a small proportion of members, seemingly on a lottery basis. And the £100 of John Lewis etc credit is only 2 months annual fee they are returning to you. So the card still doesn’t represent VFM.

      • Rhys says:

Coupled with double points offers, retention bonuses it doesn’t look so bad.

        • Andrew says:

Double points ended months ago, so no point taking that into account to sign up now. Gold card is offering a higher rate to cash in your points at the moment too, making Platinum less valuable.

          • Rhys says:

For new applicants yes. I’m talking about existing cardholders. Platinum cards had that offer over the summer. Across the span of the year it looks like Plat is working out.

          • Andrew says:

But the original question was about if anyone was considering signing up because of the offers.

          • Rhys says:

Sorry, don’t see the whole chain in the backend!

    • Anna says:

I can get another sign up bonus in March so not really any point in applying before then.

    • Harry T says:

Nah, I wouldn’t sign up. I’ll probably cancel soon if they don’t provide me with something like the Marriott Bonvoy offer that came out today.

      • BJ says:

@Harry T, still dipping your toe in now and again to test the temperature of the pool…

        • meta says:

I am keeping my Plat card. Since the annual fee last year, I got nearly £2.5k worth off credits/points either as retention offers or compo. I suspect this is not the end of offers.

        • Harry T says:

          @BJ getting warmer? 😊

  • MARK C says:

Morning All, I stayed at the conrad in istanbul week before last. On the Thursday Turkey was added to the list, meaning if i wasnt back in the country by 04:00 on the Saturday, i would have to quarantine.

I checked out of the hotel at 5pm on the Friday evening to make my way, when i received my folio they charged me for all 7 nights which i expected but only credited 6 nights. Had i not used the room, not turned up etc i could understand, surely i shouldn’t lose 1 night (2 on HH current promotion) for this?

    • Pangolin says:

In this situation it’s better just to leave quietly and let yourself be checked out automatically on the final day of the stay.

      • MARK C says:

I agree and would normally do exactly that. Unfortunately i wanted to pay with my curve card, which wouldn’t work with their systems on check in!

        • Genghis says:

If I’ve had a week long stay somewhere with family, I’ll often pay the bill the night before to avoid any hassle in the morning. It would be perfectly normal to have done this, paid with your Curve and then leave the key on the bed and sneak out. You live and learn.

  • Mr(s) Entitled says:

    Amex Plat Business question:

When I log in I currently have a banner which reads “Earn 5,000 bonus Membership Rewards points for the first five employees added to your Account.” It says T&C’s apply but they arent linked and I cant find them.

Does anyone know if this is 5,000 per employee?
