The HfP chat thread – Thursday 8th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/08/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-8th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • John says:

Can you convert an Amex Gold card into an ARCC, or does it open a new account i.e. separate credit limit and separate statement dates?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Completely different product. You can merge the MR accounts if it doesn’t happen automatically

      • John says:

That’s what I thought, but people on other forums are insisting they “downgraded” from Gold to ARCC

        • mark2 says:

Perhaps they meant logically downgraded (but physically replaced).

  • Anna says:

Finally picked up the phone to Amex and asked about retention offers on my gold MR card. It was a bit like pulling teeth but I mentioned a couple of times that I was trying to decide where to put my Xmas spend and they finally offered 5000 bonus points if I spend £1k by 31/12. I’ve got more of an incentive to use some of my 60 plus offers now anyway!

    • mutley says:

@Anna it’s all about timing I believe, I got offered 35000 MR for remaining with Platinum, but it was 5 days before renewal. I also got them to spread the cost of the £575 fee over 10 months. I tried 3 months before renewal and got nowhere!

      • Harry T says:

I had my Platinum card for about a month and then asked to cancel – was given 40k points to stay. There’s some kind of process behind it but it’s pretty opaque. I had been spending a good amount though.

      • Anna says:

Yes – I need to wait till January so I get the 10k bonus points, then I’ll try again!

    • BJ says:

If you are all going to pick the low-hanging fruit like a bunch of amateurs then this is the best you are going to get. I keep waiting and waiting for an HfP reader to hit the jackpot with amex but if they have then they are staying very tight-lipped about it.

      • Anna says:

Well why don’t YOU tell us about it then?!

        • BJ says:

I suppose I could make an advent calendar out of it and drop a clue a day, only it’s incredibly simple and wouldn’t merit that much suspense and irritation. Think simple.

      • TGLoyalty says:

I already mentioned many times I got 10k for sticking with my gold.

You won’t get much better. I assume they’ve dropped the amount as the gold had an increased redemption rate for £

      • Harry T says:

@BJ you are being too mysterious for me after my 12 hour day – please spill the beans!

        • IG says:

I’ve heard at least in US they pretty much click a button and computer tells them what to give. Call up around annual fee time. There’s around 12-13 month clock on retention by card but might have been an exception in COVID

          • Anna says:

I was speaking with an American agent – he said he would see what was available for me so sounds like this is what he did!

          • BJ says:

@Anna and others, with all these extras you folks have been picking up you must now feel very happy that you didn’t jump on the 24 month fallow strategy bandwagon way back then and call amex to cancel all your cards at once. Had you done so, you would have missed out on those unexpected freebies.

        • BJ says:

@Harry T, I cannot, it would cause havoc if I spelled it out. I will drop some hints from time to time.

          • Harry T says:

Thanks. Is it something you’ve tried?

          • BJ says:

@Harry T and others. regretably I cannot try much of anything with amex anymore as I now only have one card and one supp with them. I had five earlier this year but, stupidly some might say, I got rid of them. I think the differences in that which people report receiving from amex is simply a reflection of how much value amex perceives them to be. I am not sure I would be calling up to cancel cards myself unless I was really happy to let them all go or I had a back up plan to talk myself out of it while I was on the phone with them.

      • The Urbanite says:

People tend to keep their best Amex routes very close to their chest.

Finding lucrative Amex routes is child’s play. The limiting factor is Amex themselves and their credit reviews.

    • Harry T says:

      @BJ
Perhaps you’re suggesting that the best strategy is to keep all your amex cards and continue deriving the retention benefits…

      • Peter K says:

So what you are saying is that rather than sign up to credit cards all the time, we should *not quite* cancel them regularly?

  • IG says:

I think it’s been discussed before but whats best strategy on creation credit limit being super low? And can we recycle it through the month?

  • Manny_D says:

A question, is it possible to upgrade the Amex Business Gold to the Business Platinum, like you can on the personal cards?

    • memesweeper says:

The sometimes circulated link doesn’t work AFAIK. Nothing to stop you calling up.

  • AndyGWP says:

Qatar teacher email has landed 👍🏻
