The HfP chat thread – Thursday 8th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/08/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-8th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Swiss have cancelled my Xmas flights.
Agreed to a refund. However they stated several times it may take up to 3 or 4 months to complete.
I know Harry T recently had a positive experience with a Swiss refund, so should I do nothing, or should I consider contacting Amex for a charge back?

    Thanks

    • Harry T says:

They wouldn’t give me a time frame. However, one of the refunds hit my card within the week. You get an email to confirm your refund just before it posts. I’ve just received an email for the second booking, so I expect I’ll see the refund on my card before the end of the week.

    • E says:

I am still waiting for the Swiss refund for flights they cancelled in July. They are supposed to be processing the refund next week I have now been told.

      • Doreen says:

I asked for a refund on Sept 29th (notified of Nov 18th cancellation – 2 for 1 LHR SIN) Got email yesterday saying refund approved but could take up to 21 working days days to reach card.

I suppose it’s good news that Swiss are finally refunding.
But technically they are supposed to give you your money back within 7 days of a cancelled flight.
        (I agree it’s a bit unrealistic, 14 or even 30 in covid circ’s might not be unreasonable… .but 4-9 months!!! ??)

Guys just wondering what are the best seats to select in business flying as a couple with a small infant under 2.

The aircraft that we flying on is the 787 – BA 0033/BA0034.

Any opinions or experience would be appreciated.

Well, spent at Marriott hotels only. Not nice.

    • Harry T says:

Makes sense from Marriott’s perspective. They want us to spend money at their hotels, not Tesco!

Like many I have ANA F flights booking with VS points in March. It’s looking like April is the earliest Japan is going to open up again. Is there any way to avoid paying the £30 cancellation fee so I can rebook later in the year given they probably won’t cancel until nearer the time and I don’t have enough points spare to have two live bookings at once.

  • Grant says:

Anyone had success with HL and Curve in the last few days? I know we discussed it earlier in the week but I’ve been out of the loop for a couple of days. Still no joy for me.

  • Tom says:

I have upgraded from BA Blue to BAPP, does my Blue card still work whilst i wait for the card (says it will be here tomorrow) because ideally i need to use it today and if so will it be at the higher earning rate too? TIA

    • Jonathan says:

Yes card will still work. You earn at higher rate once account is upgraded but I’m not sure it’s instant. Should be fine tomorrow AM but may not be till system updates overnight. Login to your online account & if it shows as BAPP then you’re good to go.

    • Ed says:

Last time I did the upgrade even the transactions that were pending posted with the higher earning rate

I’ve neglected my Bonvoy account recently as IHG has had such great offers. How do I find out when my status expires and also do points expire?! I have about 400k tied up in bookings for the next 12 months but no guarantee that these will take place. Do points from cancelled bookings get extra life (there was a horror story recently from a reader whose Iberia flight was cancelled and points lost because they ahd expired. I am Bonvoy gold if that makes any difference. I can apply for Amex Platinum sign up bonus next March to revive the gold status if necessary.

I thought the passthrough on Bendy was fixed and 8999 was no more. When paying Creation with Bendy using Beardy MCC is 8999 when paying direct its 6012.
