Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 6th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/06/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-6th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Could I get some advice?

I booked an avios redemption return trip to Zurich for early December using a Lloyds voucher to upgrade to CE. The plan was to see the Christmas markets, which I am told may be in doubt (and if they go ahead may be ticketed or subject to heavy restrictions). BA has also cancelled both of my flights but given me the option to rebook.

Can I rebook for flights next year instead and if so, will I keep the companion voucher? Or should I just let the flights be cancelled, get the voucher dropped back into my account and rebook something for next year?

    • Eligold says:

I was given I think only 3 months from cancellation till expiration, so it pays to check up with Avios what expiry date they’ll apply to your Lloyds voucher

Any hotels to recommend in Inverness, especially one with a low charge for parking the car during a holiday?
Dont want to lose the APD savings to parking and hotel.

    • Rhys says:

The Courtyard (Marriott) has just opened at the hotel, no idea on parking though. Rob reviewed it earlier this year. https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/03/19/review-courtyard-by-marriott-inverness-airport-hotel/

    • VP says:

Courtyard Inverness is literally at 2 mins walk from the Terminal. They currently have a buy 1 get 1 free sale where we got 2 nights for 80 odd. The rate mentioned free parking. It didn’t mention breakfast but on arrival we were told that breakfast is included !! can’t beat that!

      • Rob says:

We reviewed the Courtyard. It is very nice and probably better than the hotels in the town.

    • Eligold says:

I’m also looking at shlepping the wife and kids to Inverness or Jersey for an APD saving trip, especially with the current 50% off offer.
Can’t decide if to do a straight turnaround on the same plane back or stay until the next flight same day or overnight

    • Dave says:

We stayed at the courtyard last week for a few days. Parking is usually £9 a day but there are usually various offers on. We got parking included on our £36 per night rate! I think breakfast is usually about £7.50 (if not included) so Platinum and above can get it completely free using the 10 dollar per person per night benefit. Nice hotel, great food too.

    • Tw33ty says:

Plenty of parking at the marriot. Just it’s a bit out of the town, but better than staying at the hie in the town any day.
The only other points earning in Inverness is the best Western or mercure both right in the centre, or the hie on the a96 or at a push the jury’s Inn.
I’d choose the marriot at the airport, as most things in Inverness are a bit dated to say the least.

Hi everyone, a different type of question today on award wallet. Does anyone use a password manager AND award wallet? i.e. the password manager should be the only place you store all your password right, how would that work with award wallet?

    • Pete says:

I use both and they both have my passwords – theoretically not ideal, but it’s a risk I am prepared to live with. Particularly as the password manager ensure they are all different.

    • Rob says:

It won’t work with AW. However, you can set up AW to store passwords on your hard drive and not on their server.

  • BrotherBear says:

Flight tomorrow just opened for online check in.

Says unable to check in online.

Assume likely nothing to worry about?

Was a booking I’d changed route and dates for previously and only had it ticketed today after chasing for the e-ticket email.

    • @mkcol says:

Are you travelling to Greece or somewhere else you need to fill in a form about your non-Covidness? If so they need to check it in person/scan the QR code.

    • Rob says:

Is it route where you need to show a covid certificate?

  • planeconcorde says:

Oh dear. Gatwick airport to introduce a £5 car drop-off fee, but no date has been set when it will be introduced.
“Anyone who does not wish to pay the charge will be able to drop-off or pick-up passengers in the airport’s long-stay car parks with two hours free parking and a free shuttle bus to the terminals.”
    Source:
    http://mediacentre.gatwickairport.com/press-releases/all/20_10_05_forecourt_charging.aspx

What a great idea, NOT, to quash limited demand for travel even further by adding further charges.

    • Nick_C says:

They currently only charge £4 for 30 minutes in the short stay car park!

      • Andrew says:

How much will they “fine” you for picking up in drop-off area?

£2 to drop off in Edinburgh
£5 to pick up in Edinburgh

£100 “fine” if you dare to pick-up in the drop-off. Even if you are dropping someone off at the same time as picking up.

Although in Edinburgh, if you know where you are going, you can walk through to the long-stay area and pick-up and drop-off free.

    • ChrisC says:

Come on does not being able to drop of someone off right infront of the terminal really stop people travelling or make them want to fly from another airport?

      • Lady London says:

Absolutely iniquitous this whole idea of dropoff charging. It’s moneygrubbing Britain at its best

  • Rhys says:

We’ve just re-enabled recent comments in the sidebar on articles and pages. Hopefully that makes some of you happy!

    • Optimus Prime says:

      Thanks!

    • lev441 says:

Great! No able to go on the home page though?

      • Rob says:

        Where exactly?!

        • AJA says:

I think lev441 means that the recent comments only appear if you are reading one of the articles and scroll to the comments. When you are on the home page they disappear. I think s/he was suggesting to have them also appear in a similar spot on the home page.

          • Rob says:

I know what he meant 🙂 I was asking where on the home page you realistically expect us to put it, given how it is laid out?

        • Crafty says:

Shame though as the home page is presumably where people want it. So you come to the site and quickly check if there’s been any new activity.

  • SteveSauceman says:

Has anyone tried topping up a Trading212 ISA with IHG card via Curve?
If so, did it attract any interest/charges with Creation?

    • J says:

I have done etoro with Curve no problems… but beware as despite requesting a withdrawal to a bank a/c, they transferred a withdrawal back to Curve and said they reserve the right to do this…

  • Rob says:

Possibly not – only if the charge goes down as XXX Hotel and not XXX Bar or XXX Restaurant.

    • VP says:

Thanks. If situation improves, will try to get in a night somewhere before 31st dec.
