The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 6th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/06/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-6th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Morning we have a trip to Italy planned for later this month. Looks like our Bupa travel ins won’t cover if Italy is on the FCO list. We still would like to go.
Anyone has any other insurance to suggest that would provide cover? I am not worried about Covid sickness cover but just the usual cover

    • Anna says:

I think the FCO issue is the major stumbling block to a lot of insurance policies rather than the COVID cover. A couple of providers have been mentioned recently who will cover COVID-related illness but not if the FCO advises against travel in the first place (my own policy is the same, which is going to make things extremely difficult when we do start travelling again). I’m assuming you would be relying on EHIC for health cover and a separate policy for delays/theft etc?

    • Number9 says:

Look at battleface for insurance there is another company that will cover for Europe but can’t recall name just do a google search with appropriate words and it will come up.

    • Aliks says:

We went to Italy last month, and unfortunately my wife broke her wrist. We went to the local hospital for X-rays, arm in plaster etc, and they didn’t even ask for our EHIC card.
Only the doctors spoke English, so it was a bit confusing to get to the right place, but all in all a good free service. Of course, Your Mileage May Vary . . .

    • Anna says:

Rumour is that Italy may be going on the naughty list this week.

    • Sukes says:

Avanti will sell you their insurance + an optional add on to travel against fco advice. It applies to Europe only and won’t cover Covid sickness when away. However I also think it won’t cover cancellation for Covid related reasons. Read the small print of any policy very very carefully as I’m not sure any of these new insurance products are worth the paper they are written on. I’ve not seen any insurer being upfront about what costs they would cover if you were told to self isolate before or during travel, or if you were placed in local lockdown, or had a positive test but no Covid ‘illness’ as they define in their terms. I think staysure are selling similar to avanti.

The Qatar deal for teachers….all I can say is that there are a lot of UK teachers up all night ensuring that the UKs allocation is gone by then for that day.

    • Charlieface says:

      It was on HUKD.
It’s not such a deal bearing in mind the free ticket you need to pay YQ and the second ticket is 50% base fare only.

      • Rob says:

You DON’T pay YQ. Read the rules – Qatar specifically says you don’t. You only pay APD, airport charges etc, so under £100.

  • Gareth says:

    Good morning all,

Historically, have there been occasional conversion bonuses for the HSBC Premier World Elite card?

    • Rob says:

Yes. Click HSBC under ‘HFP by Category’ in the sidebar (desktop) and they will show.

      • Gareth says:

Thanks Rob. I’ll keep them with HSBC then until either I need them or there is another transfer bonus.

  • DJ says:

For those who upgraded to HSBC World Elite in September 2020, make sure you check your statement, I have been charged the card fee £195 on both Sep and Oct statement.

  • Nick says:

Tried my luck again in Qatar’s teacher promotion and got this message today: “You have submitted your details already.” Looks like we can enter only once, or does it mean I have already bagged a ticket. Not sure!

  • Peter K says:

@BJ and the Metro Bank offer. There is no need to be in London. I live far a North of there and had no trouble joining.
    My code is QB96YRNW

@Nick C. No worries at your using LL’s code. I used it as well to join Metro Bank and get the £50 and wouldn’t have my own code to share without having used hers 🙂 Fair’s fair.

  • mark2 says:

My wife has just received an email from Amex about one of her co-op purchases on 3 Oct, but not the other two. Interestingly not the main card.

    • mark2 says:

the other two cards, so three purchases

    • Sukes says:

We used the offer on 5 cards in the same coop on Sunday a/noon. 20min ago just got the email to confirm usage on the main card (Amex plat). No other emails as of yet.

      • ChasP says:

“We used the offer on 5 cards in the same coop on Sunday a/noon.”

        Seagulls and now pigeons

  • Harry T says:

Looks interesting! Especially if works with a 241.

    • Charlieface says:

Entirely expected in my opinion, although it’s surprising it doesn’t last longer than a week

    • Anna says:

Have to travel by the end of June though. How would you choose a destination at this point?! (Apart from where BA is actually flying, obvs).

      • Harry T says:

The other issue is how much cash BA want for a redemption! It’s cheaper to get Ex EU flights than other their taxes 😂

        • Polly says:

Yes, but we might not be able to get to that country to fly from…glad qr cancelled our kul flts. Now got BA to kul in J tho…
