The HfP chat thread – Monday 5th October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/05/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-5th-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does buying Tesco gift cards count on the Spend £40 and get £5 back Tesco offer on BAPP if bought at the till? The T&C’s say the offer is not valid on any Tesco bank products/services. Is a Tesco gift card a Tesco bank product?

It is my mum’s birthday and she likes to shop in Tesco so I thought I would give her a gift voucher as well as some flowers.

    • Anna says:

Your mum wants a basket of Jo Malone products from Selfridges, not a Tesco voucher!

    • Nick_C says:

Almost anything bought from a Tesco store should count, including Gift Cards for John Lewis (Waitrose), Apple Music, Netflix etc etc.

      • AJA says:

Thanks both! My mum likes Tesco so a voucher allows her to buy something a bit more extravagant with her weekly shop or whatever she fancies. I have ordered a Fortnums hamper to be delivered as well taking advantage of the 10% back on my BAPP.

    • Rob says:

It should work fine. I intend to pick up an Amazon or Uber (or something equally easy to empty) card if I come across one.

      • AJA says:

Thanks Rob. I will report back once bought (or attempted if unsuccessful)

        • Polly says:

Yep lots of Tesco GCs here on our cards.. all worked, and now do ops working, nice little extras these weeks…

      • AJA says:

Just to report back bought a Tesco gift card, flowers & a box of chocolates spending over the £40 and got the email saying I had triggered the offer so will get £5 back.

@ Lady London – have all your Metro Bank referral codes been used?

    • Peter K says:

If they have then my code is QB96YRNW:

      https://metrobankinvite.co.uk/referafriend/friend?code=QB96YRNW

      Thank you.

      • BJ says:

ISTR that you had to live in or around London to open a Metro Bank account. Is this still the case?

        • Nick_C says:

I opened it on line. Took about 10 minutes. You need to upload a picture of your driving licence or passport and a selfie. Not aware of any geographic restrictions. I’m 40 miles from London.

    • Lady London says:

no idea. i would be surprised if my 5 have been used as Peter K ( marketing his below 🙂 ) is the only one who mentioned using it and it’s only been on here.
      .
My code was 2CGV4719 but Metro don’t seem to advise when they get applications in from referees – I rather suspect the only way Metro acknowledges is when we both get £50 !

      • Lady London says:

@Nick_C just checked on Metro Bank site. Yup they do really only ever give an account holder 1 referral code (it just refused me saying I already had one). How we are supposed to know if someone used the 5 uses of our code… ?? not sure they thought of it. However I did try in case you thought I was lazy!! 🙂

They seem to have cheekily added a bit more to their qualifying conditions now :
“For you both to be eligible for £50, your friend needs to open a new Personal Current or Private Banking Account with us, switch within 30 days, deposit at least £500 in each of the first two months, and make 10 debit card purchases in that time.”

I don’t think they wanted £500 in two months initially, I think it was just one month, and I don’t recall them wanting 10 debit card purchases as well originally. Perhaps the scheme has been successful so they’ve cheekily increased the requirements?
sorry I can’t guarantee my code hasn’t been used although i strongly suspect there are still four uses left 🙂

        • Peter K says:

Hi LL. I’ve just finished the 10 debit card uses and two lots of £500 deposits in two different calendar months so we should get the £50 each within the next 30 days I believe. A bit of a faff but £50 is £50!

        • Nick_C says:

@LL. I’ve used your code. 10 DC transactions won’t be a problem. Key thing is they don’t need any DDs on the AC that you switch to them. That would have been more of a hassle.

@Peter, sorry, but I went with LL’s code as I wouldn’t have known about the deal if it hadn’t been for her.

          (BJ seems interested though…)

          • Lady London says:

            Tx a lot @Nick_C.
Looks like I might have 3 uses left on n my code then.
Let’s hope we both get the £50!

        • Catman says:

Does anyone know if you can get the £50 without switching?

          • Nick_C says:

You have to switch to get the £50. (And deposit £500 and do 10 debit card transactions). However, I just opened a second basic account at a bank where I’m already a customer. Once I receive the debit card, I’ll use that for the switch. You need the debit card number to do the switch.

  • Gareth says:

Some mr and Mrs smith hotels bookable tomorrow with points, rest by end of month. Dynamic pricing and can’t use credit card free night

    • Gareth says:

      That’s IHG points obviously

      • Optimus Prime says:

Looks like your booking will become non-refundable within 30 days of arrival.

      • Rob says:

        Correct.

I’ve got the details but I’m sitting on them until Wednesday – hopefully we can get an idea of pricing. My guess is around 0.3p per point, so 150,000 points per night for a £450 hotel.

        • marcw says:

Few months ago you guessed that they would have fixed pricing, like Hyatt…

          • BJ says:

But dynamic pricing came along at IHG.

          • Rob says:

Doubt it, because IHG told me a year ago they were paying real (full) cash to Smith for the rooms.

    • New Card says:

Any news re the Six Senses hotels becoming redeemable too?

  • Ammar says:

What should I do – Have flights booked to TFS from LHR in January, booked using avios and lloyds voucher earlier this year (pre covid). Unfortunately, cannot afford to quarantine on my return from there so wondering re my options:
    1) Call up for a refund, what would i Get a FTV? or something else
    2) Wait for BA to cancel flights and then claim refund/FTV?
    3) Something else I have not thought off

    Thanks
    A

    • memesweeper says:

      (2) … you may as well wait unless you’re desperate to immediately book something else

      • Ammar says:

thanks, i think thats what I was thinking of doing originally, but was not sure if the rules change from BA which come in a weeks or so, would affect my options.
