Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Saturday 3rd October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/03/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-3rd-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I recently had the same problem when upgrading BA to BAPP, but the saved offers all magically reappeared between 1 and 2 days later (sorry can’t remember exactly!). Some kind of manual and/or overnight batch process I assume.

  • Rob says:

Barclays probably your best bet, unless you want to get a Revolut etc to avoid adding to your credit file.

    • Doc says:

Thanks Rob. Revolut has same issue of 1% mark up at weekends and 0.5% over a £1000 per month, so excluded it. Thanks for the advice.

      • Waddle says:

You can avoid this by exchanging what you need during the weekday and spending the foreign currency at the weekend.

  • Spk says:

    Transferwise is another option.

    • Mr. AC says:

Transferwise it’s quite expensive compared to many other options unless you’re sending money to a bank account.

Avios RFS booking question. Have flights booked for next year to GVA. To avoid the £35 cancellation fee, could someone explain how the book with confidence works in this scenario please? I would like to rebook for a different destination a few months later but same 4 people travelling. Is this possible or will I have to swallow to £35pp? Thanks 👍

    • pauldb says:

If you book by 13Oct for travel by 31Aug, you’ll have the option to cancel the booking for FTVs. Each person will get a voucher for 9k avios + £35, or whatever you paid, that can then be used towards a new booking in the same name. So you don’t lose the £35 unless you fail to use the FTV (valid to Apr22).

      • Matthew says:

Ok great, thank you. And I just top up with Avios if I’m changing from a band 1 destination zone with a band 3 for example?

        • Lady London says:

yes. if you move to a more expensive band destination then as RFS is only short haul, then as well as more avios the “tax” you will be asked to pay is likely to increase substantially.

          • Matthew says:

Thanks both. New band still RFS, just more Avios 👍 but it saves £140 fee for changing which is great.

  • memesweeper says:

Curve and/or revolut and keep with a rewards card. Curve is more convenient but marginally more expensive at weekends. As a casual user iM sticking with Curve, Revolut sits in the ‘emergency’ wallet.

  • Doc says:

Thank you. Only looked at the zero card. This might also work. Will look into it.

  • Steve says:

RFS eligibility, need to have earned 1 avios in the last 12 months? If no BA card and no flying I won’t earn a point in the traditional sense any time soon. To transfers in from hotel schemes count?

AMEX Platinum Business Insurance question – Ive booked (points/££££) my mother-in-law to come to the Seychelles with us in 2 weeks time. I booked using MY BA Amex and Hilton VISA. She has a Platinum that normally takes care of insurance for her. Does anybody know if she is covered, and if not what does she need to pay for on her AMEX Platinum to be covered for everything? EG can she just pay for say the transfers or rental car? Is there a min spend?

    • Harry T says:

Assuming that the FCO guidance permits travel there, I believe holding the Platinum card should provide basic medical cover. Your Platinum card should cover you for medical cover AND anything you paid for on your amex, or where you tried to pay with Amex but couldn’t (you will likely be required to prove this). Her Platinum insurance won’t cover her for things you paid for, IMO.

      • Harry T says:

Her Platinum card should provide basic medical cover for her if she becomes unwell abroad (unsure about covid), regardless of who paid*

        • babyg says:

Yeah that’s how I read it, but I guess I better ring on Monday when AXA offices are open to get the official answers. Thanks Harry T.

      • Tracey says:

FCO currently advises against all but essential travel to the Seychelles, even though the requirement to quarantine has been removed.
Hopefully, now that the Seychelles are allowing people fromBritain in the FCO will review this.
