The HfP chat thread – Friday 2nd October

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/10/02/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-2nd-october/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

According to SeanM 1997 on Twitter:

According to London Heathrow’s departure/arrival website – Loganair have obtained slots for 12x weekly flights to Isle of Man commencing 25 October 2020.

No flights currently on sale as yet

    Possible BA codeshare ?

Also unconfired is that Eastern will operate flights between Heathrow and Teeside.

    • Anna says:

I think IOM requires 14 days quarantine for all arrivals, and people have been sent to prison for infractions such as stopping for petrol on the way home from the airport!

  • TonyT says:

Hi, I’m currently Platinum Amex due to renew in December. I have BA status (Gold) til 2022) I’ve had lots of travel cancelled since March like many. I’m looking to downgrade platinum until things become more clear / pick up. Any suggestions on an alternate Amex card pls?

    • Matt says:

I downgraded to a Gold Charge card – free for the first year, and should make £15K spent for 10K extra MR. Main advantage is hopefully being able to upgrade again for another 20k MR points.

  • Vit says:

Question for those using Monese please, have you ever topped up using PayPoint? If yes, is it only using cash to top up or can use credit card including amex to top up?

    • mark2 says:

Many, many times. Never with cash, which I very rarely use. I do use credit card, mainly Amex, but at 1700 today, I (and presumably all other holders) received an email stating, among other things, that the limit on PayPoint has been reduced to £2500 per month at a cost of £14.95 which requires careful planning. I assume that you can still up and downgrade each month.

  • Maciek says:

Is the BA arrival lounge open?

  • Jimbob says:

Does anyone know what the daily and monthly Curve limits are, if your annual limit is £500k?

  • Paul Smith says:

I am flying BA to Crete on Wednesday (a return Avios booking). BA have just informed me that the return flight is cancelled and have rebooked us the following day. I have a few questions about our rights, can anybody clarify please?

    1. The rebooked flight seems like our best option to get home. Should we confirm the rebooking now, or is there some reason to wait?
    2. If we accept the rebooking, can we claim for an extra hotel night? Can we just remain in our chosen hotel, or would BA only pay for their choice?
    3. Cancellation was notified 13 days and 20 hours before the departure time, does that qualify for sub-14 day compensation?

    Thanks for any pointers.

    • Harry T says:

      1) accept the rebooking if you still want to go to Crete and it’s your best way of getting home. You are entitled to a full refund though, if you want it.
      2) I think duty of care might apply under EC261 but I’m not sure, as they’ve given you reasonable notice. Hopefully more au fait readers can chip in.
      3) You will not be entitled to compensation, as this aspect of EC261 has been waived when cancellations are due to coronavirus. The burden of proof is essentially non existent for this, so BA can claim the cancellation was covid related and discharge any compensation obligations.

      • Lady London says:

Yes duty of care still applies so for the extra day you are entitled to extra hotel night and readonable local cost of food and nonalcohol drink for 3 mealtimes per day occurring during your extra wait.

I’d call BA to accept – dont do it online – and say you accept subject to those expenses being covered. Tell them how much the hotel is (in case you’ee in The Ritz and BA thought you would only charge a B&B).

If it’s a BA Holiday call them and clarify also.

Record your call if you can or at least take noted with date and time of the call and who you spoke to.

        • Lady London says:

*duty of care applies regardless of any period of notice given.

The notice of 14 days only matters if compensation would be payable. Currently compensation is not applicable. Covid general circumstances prevailing are currently triggering the part of EC261 that says in exceptional circumstances no compensation needs to be provided – even if notice is less than 14 days.

    • Roy says:

Just curious what travel insurance you are using to cover you for the No Fly advice by the FCO?

Obviously you’re happy to self isolate when you get back?

  • The Original Nick says:

Please could someone remind me of how to pay into premium bonds via IHG CC

    • Connor says:

      Curve.

    • Aston100 says:

Would it have hurt to have added a post editing function when redesigning this site?

        • Travel Strong says:

I like it as it is, embrace your sandy incontinence panties

        • Rob says:

Show me a site, anywhere, which lets you edit comments (as opposed to forum posts) more than 5 minutes after submission.

          • ChasP says:

thta would do me – its so easy -esp on a phone or wth a dodgy eyboard (le ths one) to type somethng n ht send then realse that ts all garbage
yes now we should proofread before httng send but the opton to edt for 5 mns would be most useful

          • Char Char says:

For anonymous comments like this it would just be a headache, need to be able to register for anything like that to work really

          • Lady London says:

er….Disqus sites (LL) give you about an hour and the Australians that also do cars laptops and watches for frequent fliers do too.

          • Rob says:

Disqus is terrible. Most sites that try it, drop it. For a start you don’t ‘have’ the comments, they are stored by them and you lose them all if you leave. It also slows site loading dramatically and it cannot be included in site search.

        • Doug M says:

I like the idea of a forum, but I get it’s HfPs business model and maybe just being another forum is not their choice. Editing comments in the current format would make for some ridiculous chains as people edited original posts to shift position and make the responses seem random. You can’t run a comments section on an site expecting people to behave, the Internet is not sensible.

          • Rob says:

We want to do one and, with the new wider site we can do it. First job is to tidy up all the loose ends on the current redesign before we start adding new functionality though.
