Good World of Hyatt points deals at new Hyatt Regency Malta

Hyatt is gearing up to open its first hotel in Malta.

Hyatt Regency Malta is due to open on 10th October. Situated in St Julian’s, it is a new-build with 151 rooms, three restaurants, an indoor pool and an outdoor rooftop pool. It overlooks St George’s Bay.

Malta is open to UK visitors and no proof of a coronavirus test is required as far as I can tell. You will, however, be required to quarantine for two weeks on your return to the UK.

As a World of Hyatt redemption it is a Category 2, which is 8,000 points per night.

Given my 1.1p per point valuation for World of Hyatt points, this makes it good value even at the depressed €99 November rates.

For Summer 2021, when I can see cash rates as high as €200 per night, it is excellent value for points.

It’s worth noting that you can currently buy World of Hyatt points with a 25% discount until 30th September, which would represent a big saving on Summer rates.

    The revenue from rentals needs to cover the cost of keeping the location open and dropping prices when demand is low probably won’t stimulate demand as people don’t usually rent cars of a whim.
    
    Also lots of these rental car companies take volume on 6-9 month deals so lots of their inventory will be off their books and as they could see 3-6 months of lockdowns they probably didn’t sign new deals.

    Also rented a Jaguar F-Pace from them a month ago for £200. Avis is super expensive whenever I check!

Not true, you would be uninsured and going against FCO advice.

Malta is not on the exemption list.

  There are plenty of travel insurance companies who will cover trips to places where FCO advise against all but essential travel – they just cost a little more. Most of these companies still include medical cover for Covid 19 too.

      We used Battleface for a trip to Spain in the summer. Was about £150 for a family of 5 for 10 days. Note the Amex Platinum car hire insurance is also void, but insurance4carhire told me they would provide cover so I took a policy with them.

        I looked at Battleface a while ago, and it didn’t cover any pre-existing medical conditions (don’t know if this has changed now). So COVID was covered, but nothing else. I guess some people are happy with this, but given we have several medical conditions between us, I didn’t find it a good alternative to a normal insurance policy. I’m pretty cynical about insurance policies anyway, and feel like they’d do all they can to wiggle out of paying.
        
        I found a couple of other companies offering similar but again, excluded cover for any pre-existing medical conditions.

  This hotel does not overlook St George’s Bay whatsoever, it has been specifically built facing away from it. This is because there is an areas directly next door which is a bowling alley due to be demolished to make way for a brand new Holiday Inn. This is directly opposite the Intercontinental which is adjacent to the HIX, as I understand it will all be under one owner who will have a monopoly on the IHG properties.

    Paceville was for me the only bit of Malta I didn’t like. Valetta, Mdina and the coast are spectacular but this location was like Magaluf. Yet all the chains seem to be here – perhaps it’s year round conference demand or something like that.

        We actually stayed in the Westin which is on the edge of the area: it was fine (looks like refurbished since) and you only had to drive past the bars/clubs to get there. I was glad we weren’t in the IC. For choice I would probably stay in a small hotel in Valletta which would add something special to your visit, but I think that means walking out of the city for your car/bus so you might prefer something more convinient as we did, especially if you want beach/pool.

        I actually came back from the Westin Malta last week and are currently enjoying wonderful isolation at home! They have undertaken a renovation project while the resort was closed. Rooms are really nicely refurbished and most of the public areas as well. Could not fault the customer service and would definitely recommend it. The areas surrounding it in walking distance are okay……….. A few nice local restaurants and bars. But for a 10 Euro taxi ride away there are some beautiful places to visit.

I stayed at the Citizen M at Schipol couple of years ago positioning myself overnight for an ex-EU to the US

Room clean and functional and OK for a one night stay but I wouldn’t stay there for more than that.

Most room facilities like the TV and curtains are operated via their ipas which is all fine and dandy until you forget to plug it into it’s charger!

  I did a similar stay at CDG a few years ago, and had the same reaction. The bed and shower were very good for the price, but there was barely enough room for luggage. The iPad controls were miserable, as it wouldn’t work properly or else were so non-intuitive that even two highly tech-savvy users couldn’t figure out anything beyond ‘blinds up/down’ and ‘lights off/on’ (and don’t even try when one needs light to access the bathroom at 3 AM…). I was also pleased with the quality and value-for -money of breakfast and coffee, and the ambience of the public area, for an airport hotel; in a city center location I would however prefer to find a local cafe. Like CHRISC, I wouldn’t choose CitizenM for an extended stay, or where I expected to spend any time in the room other than sleeping, but for one night it was fine.

Total waste of time this Avis offer as it is only valid for U.K. Rentals. Would love it to apply to all European countries. Does anyone know if other countries are offering anything similar ? I’m interested in Portugal

  Just booked a basic car with Holiday Autos for a month in Portugal starting Saturday, £387. Since I am without a Plat Amex, I paid separately £50 for an annual car hire excess policy. Local firm Luzcar – who have been great before – wanted £600 plus. ps Holiday Autos rate fully cancellable.

    I’m staying, but wife is off to Portugal for a month before we have the half-term true lockdown that now seems inevitable in Scotland.
    
    My bag is packed ready to join her as soon as the full lockdown is announced.
    
    Two weeks self-isolation in November on our return is not an issue for our work. And worth it for some autumn sun since we aren’t going to get away in January, as far as I can tell.

Am a big fan of CitizenM and at £62 a night (you don’t even have to pay until arrival), still wide availability, I would advise people to have a punt.

I still travel/use a credit card a lot (although generally use my capital on tap abroad due to no exchange fees) so I was wondering what my best option is?

    at the moment, i don’t have a goal with my BAPP because i have now got the 2-4-1 and honestly, i’m not sure how useful that ticket will be (i’m generally a solo traveller). I’m also BA Gold, so don’t really need lounges
    so really, i just want to give myself a target in order to get a good bonus… i like the idea of the AMEX Platinum charge card with the travel insurance and hire car insurance but want to make sure i do things “in the right order” which i believe would be ok as i have only had a BAPP AMEX before.
