The HfP chat thread – Thursday 24th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/24/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-24th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Follow up to my TAP status match i received an email last night saying my account is promoted to gold. Just logged in and the card in the app shows it is valid until the end of Sep 2021. I hope I get to take advantage of the status….

I was under the impression that the CheckMyTrip app sent out an alert when the airline made an itinerary change ? It hasn’t happened with my Qatar Stockholm-Doha-Hanoi flights . Qatar have put me on their later flight landing Doha 3 hrs after the Hanoi flight has departed! Not that i am terribly optimistic that the flights will go ….

This is useful to know, thanks for that tip

  • Leo says:

Would you expect a BA flight sale (or expanded Holiday sale) anytime soon, Rob?

  • Rhys says:

Surprised nobody has mentioned the new ‘next article/previous article’ links under Today’s Top Stories!

    • Rob says:

…. which, for clarity, will only appear on articles under a week old. Beyond that, we don’t see the value in encouraging people coming in from Google to click to a ‘Previous Article’ which is probably totally irrelevant.

Rhys I hadn’t noticed it until I read your comment. Thanks for restoring this feature but as I read articles from top to bottom as they appear on the mobile site I keep pressing next article expecting to be taken to the next one down the page that I haven’t read but it goes the other direction back to newer articles higher up the page. It’s counterintuitive to select previous article for ones I have yet to read. May I suggest you change the wording to newer and older on the basis that newer articles appear at the top of the page?

      • Rhys says:

It’s done to be consistent chronologically and across the site (with the homepage for example)

    • ChrisBCN says:

Ah fantastic, hadn’t noticed. I’d gotten too used to going back and forth via the homepage (hitting the back button several times if I had gone through several comment pages….).

      Thanks for restoring!

    • Peter K says:

Like others I was used to the rigamarole of going back to the homepage then on to a different article. Also they are subtle (a good thing). Thank you for adding them back again.

This morning the Jersey Chief Minister has announced changes to the Island’s COVID-19 safe travel policy. As these have just been announced the web site hasn’t been updated yet.
From next Tuesday, some countries (including the UK) will be broken down into smaller areas for considering their green, amber or red classification i.e. Currently, all of the UK is considered green from next Tuesday some areas will become amber.
From next Tuesday, arrives from countries considered green will have to opt between:
    a) 14 days self-isolation
    b) Or take a COVID-19 PCR swab test on arrival and if still in the Island a second COVID-19 PCR swab test on day 5. If the first test is negative then self-isolation between the two tests is not required.
They are also reducing the time between the test being taken and results published. Once they have consistently got that time period down to 12 hours or less then they will introduce self-isolation on arrival until the first test result is known.
As far as I understand it there is no change to the self-isolation requirements for areas considered amber or red.

BA status question: my status expires Nov 2021. Assuming I start collecting TPs for my new status from Oct 2020 will the whole year be at the reduced rate, or the normal rate?

  • Dave says:

Anyone know how late before a flight departing you can apply for a Future Travel Voucher with BA?

    • AJA says:

You can apply until 1 hour before flight departs but I wouldn’t leave it that late to apply as it causes BA problems removing you from the flight manifest.
