Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 22nd September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/22/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-22nd-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Sorry a bit late to the party but question on using Virgin CC to pay off balance on IHG CC please. I hold both credit card and thinking to maximise the miles & points. Thinking that I will be using IHG card in stores / supermarkets / online purchases etc. to collect points and then using Virgin to pay off the IHG card to collect miles. Read a few comment here on HfP that no fees whatsoever incurred on Virgin credit card. Is my understanding correct? I have quite a few expense coming up from home renovation and want to maximise this.

    Thanks.

Received 3 discount coupons from Tesco today. £15 off £100 and two £10 off £100. In-store only. Bad timing. Wish they gave the option to use it for home delivery.

    • Aston100 says:

I cannot recall receiving any coupons in many months, possibly years.
My clubcard app has never had any in there either.

    • Lee says:

Also received 3 £8 off £40 from Tesco which are good stack with Amex £5 off £40 offer

    • TGLoyalty says:

walk in pick up £100 amazon gift card and pay?

      • PJJ says:

I also done it with a Tesco Giftcard and got the money off

      • Lee says:

        Says no gift card

        • mark2 says:

It always does, but I always buy them.

        • TGLoyalty says:

I’ve had these many times over the years and only once I got a supervisor hovering around and she spent a while reading the terms and declined it. I was buying discounted uber ones so I wasn’t bothered. Just went back round and had another cashier (far away) put it through.

I normally do mix in some shopping though.

        • PJJ says:

          But worked

    • Anna says:

I’ve got £6 and 2 x £4 off £40 spends. Might pop in and buy some toilet roll lol.

    • Louise K says:

      I got £7 off £70, then £6 off £60 x 2. First vouchers I’ve had in months.

This month I also got 6 x £12 off £60 in Waitrose. Very good considering you can buy booze with them too. Again, first lot of vouchers in months.

  • Oliver says:

Is it possible to top up tulover backwards with any CCs and not experience fees? interested in IHG CC specifically

  • YH says:

For those with the HSBC WE card, I noticed a new feature in the HSBC app today that allows you to increase your credit limit within the app. You no longer need to call up HSBC and provide endless details and justifications. I just doubled my credit limit and was instantly approved.

    • Spk says:

      Thanks, got mine doubled too.

    • Chris K says:

Good spot. Unfortunately their algorithm doesn’t seem to like me and I’m stuck on 4k without giving endless details and justifications in the normal way! Hopefully others will have better luck.

  • rams1981 says:

Curve – just had another example of a transaction not going through and being charged to the underlying card. Only £5 but shows their controls still not working properly.

  • BS says:

Marriott: They have stopped the healthcare heroes HJH rate code. Prices now back to normal 🙁

    • Matt says:

Thought that was supposed to be continuing til Feb? That’s a shame, only getting to use it once

    • Harry T says:

No they haven’t. I can still see HJH prices for Edinburgh, Cambridge and London, as examples.

      • Matt says:

Just looked at Venice – HJH prices are still there, they’re just not very impressive any more – 500Eur per night for the St Regis, rather than 160 or 200Eur

  • Ben says:

I’ve noticed the earning rate on the SPG card has now reduced down to 2 points per £1. I signed up for the card for both my mrs & myself in January (before the relaunch to bonvoy card) and wasn’t made aware of any changes for the earning rates…. Anyone else noticed the same?

  • Ming the Merciless says:

Re- Free IHG Card. Did anyone get the double point for opening the card at the start of the year – 20,000 for spending £500 in 3 months?

Has anyone got a screenshot of the promotion? I’m in the mood for a rumble…

    Thanks

    Ben

    • Aston100 says:

Yeah I got the additional 10k points a month or two after the initial 10k points.
No screenshot as I didn’t feel the need for it.

    • Vit says:

Yes, received the additional 10k, 3.5 months after the initial application, 1.5 month after spending the first £500.

    • SteveSauceman says:

Check your IHG account, the second 10k get added directly to your account, not via your credit card statement

    • Crafty says:

      Yes
