Another batch of hotel cashback offers have hit American Express cards. This means that virtually all of the major chains are currently offering cashback via American Express, although you may not be targetted for all of these deals.

You can see our previous article on Marriott and Hyatt cashback here – these offers are still running.

American Express cahback deals with Hilton, Leading Hotels of the World, InterContinental

Marriott is offering £50 back on £200 of spend at participating hotels by 31st December. This combines nicely with the latest Marriott Bonvoy promotion worth 2,500 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points per stay.  There is also a one-off bonus of 5,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points on your third stay. The offer runs to 18th October. You MUST register via this link before your stay.

Hyatt is offering £100 back on £300 of spend at participating hotels by 31st December.

What have Hilton and IHG launched to compete?

With all of these deals, you need to look under the ‘Offers’ section on your American Express statement page onine to see if you are targetted. If you are, you need to click ‘Save to Card’ to register.

Hilton: spend £200+, get £50 cashback

Let’s start with the Hilton offer, which nets you £50 statement credit when you spend more than £200 at participating Hilton hotels.

In general, Amex / Hilton deals are cumulative so you don’t have to spend £200 in one transaction.

You can see the list of participating hotels here.

The offer appears to be limited to European properties in Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

You must book and pay by the offer end date, which is 31st December 2020. Bookings can be made on the Hilton website here.

This deal with double up with the current Hilton Honors promotion.

Called ‘Double Rewards’, it is offering double points AND double elite night credits on all stays from 8th September to 31st December. You can register here.

Remember that Hilton is also running a status match promotion at present. Full details of the Hilton Honors status match are here.

IHG: Get £100 back with Regent, InterContinental and Kimpton or £60 with Crowne Plaza, Indigo and voco hotels

IHG is running two separate offers. You may find you are targetted for one, both or none. Such is life …..

You can get £100 statement credit when spending £400+ at participating Regent, InterContinental or Kimpton hotels. You can see the list of 21 participating hotels here.

The offer is NOT valid on online payments, and will only trigger when you pay on checkout. In reality this is probably not true – since online prepayments are processed directly by the hotels – but we are just pointing out what the rules say.

You have to book and stay before 31st December 2020.

The second offer is for Crowne Plaza, Indigo and voco hotels. You will get £60 cashback when you spend £250+. The list of participating hotels is here.

Like the Regent and InterContinental offer, it is NOT (in theory) valid for online payments and will only trigger on checkout. The offer is valid until 31st December 2020.

These offers will work alongside IHG’s new ‘double base points’ promotion.

Announced last week, it runs from 1st October to 15th December. You must click here to register.

Leading Hotels of the World: spend £350, get £100 back

This offer is, again, valid until 31st December 2020.

You can see the list of participating locations here. It is limited to select European destinations.

The offer is valid on “checkout spend only” so you will have to stay by the end of the year.

The rules say that you must book via the Leading Hotels of the World website. However, realistically, I don’t know how this can be policed. American Express will pay the cashback when they see any spend from any participating hotel on your statement.

Remember that foreign transaction fees still apply

If you live outside the UK, Amex will charge you a 2.99% foreign transaction fee.

If you have a 0% FX fee credit or debit card, whilst the cashback is likely to outweigh the fee, your saving will be slightly lower than the headline amount. You can always split the checkout bill into two transactions – one which is just enough to trigger the cashback and the remaining balance paid with your 0% FX card.

  • Joe says:

Can you call Amex and ask for the offer to be manually applied?

    • Rob says:

Once upon a time they would, but no longer.

Hilton / IHG will specifically have asked for certain people to be excluded, eg anyone who booked with us in the last x months.

      • Alan says:

That’s not going to exclude many people this time unless it’s over 6 months or so! I’ve had no hotel stays since first week of March and Hilton and IHG discounts both showing up. Whether I can use them or not is a different matter…

      • Qrfan says:

I’ve got all these offers and have stayed at both Hilton and Ihg in the past three months (multiple times in the case of Hilton). I suspect they’re desperate to get anyone to book.

      • flyforfun says:

I stayed at a Hilton in August and got the offer.

  • Darren says:

As we are talking of money off hotels, I used the SLH offer recently and split the bill over 2 cards (mine and my wifes) and received the £100 benefit on both. This may work out well on a long stay or higher priced property.
I also received the stays as a credit towards Inspired status on the SLH Invited loyalty club.

  • BrianN says:

Hi for Hilton, am I right in saying prepaid online bookings are excluded?

    • Rhys says:

      Correct

      • Qrfan says:

I have had this offer previously trigger using online prepaid bookings by simply asking the hotel to take payment immediately (though not always required). I saved over £100 in early 2020 for prepaid bookings this month.

    • TGLoyalty says:

All European Hilton properties process their own charges in house. Therefore it’ll make no difference as long as it’s charged prior to the end of the offer.

    • Crafty says:

By the letter yes, but in practice no.

    • Aaron says:

Is restaurant spend at an Intercontinental, without staying at the hotel, likely to trigger the offer?

      • Rob says:

Hit and miss. It is more likely than not that it has a separate merchant code to the hotel and so won’t work.

  • Alan says:

Has anyone had any luck getting an extension to their IHG free night cert? Was due up in June, auto-extended to 31st Dec but they way things are going with another lockdown I can’t see me making use of it by the end of the year.

    • BrianN says:

No but I’m in the same position. Expires in Dec. Likelihood is the stay that I’ve redeemed it on will have to be cancelled.

      • Matt says:

The expiry date for the black IHG CC certs is book by, not stay by.

        • Alan says:

Yep, the issue is you can’t then cancel if the voucher has expired. Not sure if it can be modified to a different date??

          • Alan says:

(well you can cancel, you just lose the voucher!)

          • Matt says:

It isn’t clear. I think I’m going to make a speculative booking for Easter rather than just let it expire, and we’ll just see if I can go, if I want to go, if the hotel is open, if they’ll allow a date change then… so many unknowns…
I have similar issue with AMB free night. As someone, I think Anna, has noted today, value with that looks marginal atm even if I am able to visit where I want to.

  • Robman says:

Has anyone been able to get an extension to their spend year for BA Amex card, in order to earn the 2-4-1 voucher? I called Amex today, but the representing informed me that no extensions were possible. I’m finding it hard to spend these days with no international travel!?

  • Jordan D says:

Normally, I’d be using all these offers in Zurich. But currently works travel is banned, so frustratingly, it all goes begging…

  • BSI1978 says:

Need to be in town for 2 nights next weekend, trying to make up my mind between the The Churchill and Renaissance. Location being a mild consideration but would be interested in any thoughts from those that have stayed at either during Covid-19.

    Ta!
