The HfP chat thread – Friday 18th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/18/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-18th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    • Andrew says:

+1 Used it Sunday, no complaint sent, refund email today.

    • ChrisC says:

Just got a fare estimate in the app for a trip I may may make later tonight and the fare estimate allows for the £5 voucher

Whether it works or not later is a different matter!

  • JFS says:

A couple of months ago I’ve bought tickets to GIG in February to my daughter and partner. Today I’ve checked the prices for the same flights and they are £300 cheaper. Should I tell them to get a voucher for the current booking and book it again with the vouchers?

  • Sukes says:

I’m coming late to the party re conversation yesterday of JohnT, LL, Charlieface & others regarding rights when airport of departure is changed. Relevant also to earlier Q today of a dub-jnb cancellation replaced with offer of lhr-jnb, plus the raft of BA switch of departures from lgw to lhr. Eu261 art 8 rerouting rights have been mentioned as relevant – I don’t think so. Eu261 is expressly written with regard to providing you with rights to regard to your destination, not your origin. Eu262 even explicitly defines ‘final destination’ as the destination on your ticket ie your destination airport. It does not provide any legal definition of ‘origin’ nor express any rights to guarantee your origin. I’ve never seen airline general conditions of carriage that guarantee airport of Orion either. Extremely happy to be corrected if I’m wrong. But in the increasing instances of BA ‘cancelling’ a flight from LGW and offering a substitute service from LHR I don’t see any legal requirement for BA to transport the passenger to the new departing airport, if the passenger chooses to accept the new route. I state cancelling in quotations as I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the switched service has same dep time/same flight no as original booking hence is unlikely to be categorised as a ‘cancellation’ at all.

On a different note + datapoint – I’m on the Cairnryan-Larne crossing this eve with precisely 27 passenger vehicles on board aka very quiet. Surprisingly decent Rioja onboard. For the lurking stock analysts on this site M&S seemed most prevalent amongst the branded freight boarding.

    • Nick says:

A lot of the UK’s supermarket food stock is processed in NI, so trucks move back and forth regularly (incidentally something our esteemed government didn’t seem to realise a few months ago). M&S bucks the trend only because they use their branded lorries for almost every stock move (in and out), whereas the other supermarkets use third parties for goods in and only use branded ones for the final haul out to stores. Hence it’s not always wise to assume M&S is stronger just because you see them more on the ferry. My oh my I’m a fountain of random knowledge.

      • Sukes says:

Thks nick I for one find your random knowledge interesting! Thks for correcting my insight that clearly wasn’t insightful. Have to say the trucks where v bland vs the Percy pig Ocado ones they want to roll out….

  • Lady London says:

Erm… bottom of page 6, last few lines then footnote 7. referred to in the document on the CAA’s implementation documents you previously linked to, @Sukes. Clearly defines a route as having a specific departure *airport* and a specific arrival *airport*.

    • Lady London says:

we can nit-pick further “re-routing shall be offered at no additional cost to the passenger” page 4. so additional to being able to decline reroute from LHR instead of LGW, BA’s position (when people have argued) of paying additional costs of reaching LHR, if it works for passenger to reach LHR for the rerouting offered, seems to be doing what is required here.

You are right on closer examination pages 2-4, say, appear to talk mostly about the ‘to’ airport being changed rather than the ‘from’ airport. A few cases would surely sort that out as this is plainly ridiculous. Additionally, I believe the note at the bottom of page 6 and its footnote 7, do say what a ‘route’ is ie specifically a departure airport as well as specifically an arrival airport

You can tell I ‘m procrastinatingt this Saturday afternoon and being on here to avoid doing another job I really don’t want to start today 🙂

      Safe trip back, @Sukes
