Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 18th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/18/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-18th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Rob, this is not really fully correct. I had book a Club Europe redemption for points+taxes. I cancelled the flight and got a voucher. I then called to rebook a new flight in Economy, could downgrade, got Avios and taxes back. It was a very good experience. and the CS Rep was amazing and patient. Yes, you do need to call but it was straightforward also because I had no choice, I had to cancel online as there was no time left.
I also have flown that segment. 🙂

    • Rob says:

      That’s a different point.

When you use a FTV, small amounts of ‘change’ are returned. Above a certain threshold you get a 2nd voucher for any ‘change’.

      • Nick says:

When redeeming a FTV any remaining Avios value will be returned – it has to be, as the residual cash balance must at this point be issued on an EMD, which can’t handle Avios as it follows IATA standard rules. Rob is correct to say that small cash balances will be refunded, with larger ones being issued on the new voucher.

        • idrive says:

ok sorry, obviously the cash element (tax) was very small in my case. But still i got the full amount of avios back and got charged for the new redemption then.

  • idrive says:

Sorry but I pose the question again today: is the upgrade to Curve Metal immediate or do you have to wait, activate and use the new card to benefit of free Curve Fronted?

    • Nigel W says:

Would also like to know this information!

    • TGLoyalty says:

      immediate in my experience

you can continue using the old card until you register your new one.

    • d4ve says:

It was hit/miss for me until I got the card and activated it. Prior to this some transactions did not work. I suspect that the reason was a discrepancy between expiry date.

Can anyone help with a Revolut problem? I can’t log in to the app – it shows the good morning screen but its all greyed out and the little blue circle just sits there spinning.
You have to be in the app to get the online chat, and I can’t see a help desk phone number anywhere. Is reinstalling the only option?

    • Lady London says:

apparently Revolut updated their app, as usual without communicating with anyone.

      Suggest you update the app

  • Lee says:

Good morning! How long does the companion voucher take to arrive after you hit the spending threshold? It said you earned voucher in AMEX account two days ago but no sign in BAEC.

  • Vit says:

Question on targeted email from BA on BA Blue AMEX CC please. Wondering if anyone has similar experiences.

I’ve got targeted with below email but obviously I am not qualified. Just wonder if I can forward this link to a friend to apply — understood that I won’t get any referral bonus but not sure if AMEX will be checking my friend’s profile against anything if he/she were going to use the link from the email below:

Anyone been on a flight to Italy recently? Just wondering if all bags have to be checked in and the overhead lockers are out of use for both the outbound and inbound flights. Any up to date advice appreciated.

  • Simon says:

Morning All – quick question re Ernie/Bendy. Thus far I’ve had no problems (as Black Legacy) with deposits, but today I have had four rejections (two from each browser: Chrome/FF) for the first time. I checked the rejection emails and writ large at the head of each email: CARDHOLDER NOT PRESENT • Transaction Result: DECLINED. Has anyone else seen this before? As I say, everything has been right as rain until today with this. For clarity, I’m well within my limits, too, both Bendy and underlying, so I just wondered if anyone else had come a cropper with this, too? Thanks in advance.

LNER – I got caught up in massive disruptions on 2 Sep due to Power Line Issues…all trains were cancelled from about 5pm and we were advised to travel the following day, which we did. I have claimed for the cost of the tickets, and somewhat reluctantly on their part, the hotel we needed. However I was also advised at the time, twice, that they would cover meals required. I only claimed for the evening meal but they are refusing that saying they don’t cover meals. Is that correct? thanks for any info/advice

    • Jane says:

just worked fine for me, also legacy black. had to put in a texted code to verify which I can’t remember if I did last time but transaction went through.

    • Nick says:

As no one else has replied, I will. There’s no regulation over rail journeys that says they have to cover meals, so sadly you’re out of luck. They only have to cover a hotel if there was no way they could get you there on the same day. No EU261 equivalent for trains – one of the reasons airlines wanted it reformed.
