The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 15th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/15/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-15th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

BA have just cancelled my Avios flight from LCY to LHR flying to Faro – I assume with this change I can receive a full refund on the taxes?
By inbound was a cash flight – can I still claim a cash refund instead of a FTV?

    • Rob says:

Yes and yes, but you need to call.

      • Nick says:

You can only get a full refund for the return if it’s (a) also cancelled, or (b) on the same PNR. If it’s a separate booking and unaffected it’ll be FTV only.

    • Anna says:

Have both legs been changed (I assume you mean changed and not cancelled from what you’ve written)? Sounds like they are on separate bookings, so both would need to be changed or cancelled for you to get a refund on both.

      • Munch says:

Thanks for the updates. Just spoke to BA before seeing the replies. Nick / Anna you are correct, as my inbound is on a separate reference I have to wait for the flight to be cancelled or changed for cash or its a FTV.

        • Munch says:

What’s the latest I can leave the booking before claiming a FTV if the flight isn’t cancelled.

          • Roberto says:

The latest is as the flight closes. Thia is even the case if you have checked in.

  • Jody says:

Been having a little look on BA at holidays to replace our Monte Carlo trip in November (although in all honesty we’ll probably just end up doing something in this country).

Looked at Madeira and Sorrento, both have flights going from Heathrow but landing back at Gatwick, which is no good at all (and doesn’t look like there are any other options to change to). I didn’t even think BA were flying to/from Gatwick (obviously got that wrong), but seems a bit strange that both destinations only had that option.

Can I pay off my Amex CC bills with my Curve card (linked to my HSBC Premier WE MC? Will I get hit with the 1.5% charge?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Curve will charge you unless you have a Metal card.

No idea if HSBC will charge you too

    • John says:

Curve blue, paid Amex with no charge on Sunday

      • TGLoyalty says:

Fronted turned off and went through with no issues?

Perhaps they’ve changed their minds, they think you’re actually a metal subscriber (which is great for you) or you haven’t noticed they charged you 1.5%.

      • Aston100 says:

Got declined before, and got declined again just now when testing.
        As expected.

        Curve blue > Amex.
        Fronted turned off.
        What are you doing differently?

    • Nigel says:

Tried yesterday, got charged by Curve (black card here) but haven’t seen if Hsbc have charged me extra yet.

  • rk says:

For those with an additional card on the IHG Black card, is the additional card holder seen as that or does it create a financial link for credit files?

  • Anthony says:

I’ve had both the outbound and inbound flights cancelled on a BA holiday booking but I’ve been rebooked onto flights that depart about 4 or 5 hours later. Does that mean I can cancel for a full refund? The BA Holidays Ts & Cs seem to suggest that I need to have my departure time changed by 12 hours

  • Ron says:

Hello, is BA book with confidence only applies to BA own flights? Want to book some AS flights using Avios for next year. Thanks.

    • Rob says:

Yes, just BA. You can cancel the Alaska redemption at any time for the standard £35 fee anyway, however.

  • Chris says:

Has anyone received the 1000 Amex MR points for online booking Santander Cycles 3 times via the app?

  • Dave says:

Looking at upgrading premium economy flights to business using avios. Anyone know if you can do this with open jaw flights? Online search tool can’t handle open jaws and suspect it might be a case of ringing up.
