The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 15th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/15/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-15th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anybody here downloaded the Protection Scotland app and had a contact notification yet? Nothing for me so far despite being out and about quite widely in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Wondering if it actually works.

    • Jill (Kinkell) says:

Ha… can’t even download as my iPhone is ‘too old’ and doesn’t update to iOS 13. Same with OH. I’d certainly download if I could. No…to answer your question, and I don’t know anyone who has it ,who has been contacted, but then again, fewer cases in Highland.

I live in a local lockdown area, kids being sent home from school left right and centre and the local test centres have all run out of testing equipment. Ironically, I have just now received in the post a COVID-19 antibody test from the study I’m involved with!

I don’t know what to think about schools, and universities shortly. Probably everybody needs to relax a bit and see what happens with vulnerable groups and hospital admissions before pushing the panic buttons. My young nephew has serious respiratory issues and has a history of catching every cold around. Despite that he has been out playing with friends daily all summer, has been back at school for a month without any absences, and only one kid in his class has been sent home which was the first week of their return. Kids all seem to be happy at school and coping very well with the restrictions put in place by all accounts. This is in the third worst affecting health board area in Scotland. His parents were understandably anxious but now feel the benefits to his health from all the exercise and activity he has got have substantially allsyed their fears.

No excuses for failing to observe social distancing up your way Jill. Hooe to get up for a long weekend before the days get much shorter.

        • Jill (Kinkell) says:

No problem social distancing where I live surrounded by sheep and cows! Biggest concern is the checkout queue at Tesco given they have seemingly abandoned the sensible Queue and CS directed system employed earlier.
Better make the trip soon, BJ. The nights are fair drawing in!

A quick thanks. HFP was the only website that lists the non-UK gold number. For some reason the 0800 number, although connecting, does not register on the phone system as picking up, so it cuts off after 30 seconds on skype/mobile, as it believes the receiver has not picked up.
The non-uk number is not on the card for some reason

Following on from rail-related comments yesterday, some cheap advance fares seem to be available now for early December. After wrestling with the Trans Pennine Express website for about 2 hours (not kidding), I managed to get 3 of us return PRE-EDB for £75 which I am very pleased about! In case anyone else has similar problems, don’t bother with the “self print” option – it doesn’t seem to like it and sends you round and round in circles asking you to log in, then not recognising your details and asking you to re-register but not sending a confimation email! In the end I gave up and chose the option to have the tickets posted to me for £1 and it went through straight away! Gotta love IT.

Wonder if even Covid has managed to solve the overcriwding on TPE routes to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Badly needed more capacity.

Does anybody know the 60k points sign up bonus instead of the the 40k points on the amex plat business card is on offer again?

  • The Savage Squirrel says:

It was mentioned on the site a few weeks ago that HMRC will start charging for payments by business debit cards after a certain date. I think it was Oct/Nov but does anyone have the exact date please?

I have 2-4-1 club world flights to Mauritius in November and given that it looks like Mauritius is imposing 14 day quarantine, we are unlikely to be able to go. I was going to cancel but this I recall reading that I should hold off until the day before as if BAcancel the flight I will be able to rebook the same route if club world available in the next 355 days. Have I got this right?

    • Jane says:

365 days from your original booking date apparently, not 365 days from when they cancel.

      • Tazzy says:

So it’s of no use to me as I booked 355 days out . What a waste of getting up to call BA twice 😥

    • TGLoyalty says:

If BA cancel before your flight they can stuff their 355 days post booking rule.

That’s their admin problem not yours! under EU261 you would be due rebooking at a time suitable for both of you. Obviously you can’t just rearrange annual at BA’s whim so it will need to be whenever suits you.

  • Peter K says:

Gravatars are back!! Though they look a little weird it is a very welcome change. Thanks Rob and the team!
