The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 15th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/15/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-15th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Has anyone evidence that individual transactions combined that exceed £200 at Marriott hotels, trigger the spend £200 get £50 credit please? Many thanks

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Not from this years promo but in the promo late last year I stayed at two different properties which combined to give me the £50 credit.

    • Ikaz says:

I have checked out of my stay that took me over £200 total spend yesterday, last transaction is still pending but I will post an update on the daily chat if/when I get the credit.

    • Sukes says:

Amex told me that cumulative spend would trigger it. 13 Sep webchat: [me] Will cumulative spend trigger the deal? [Agent] I have great news for you! You can surely make the split payments for the transaction amount required for the credit.

  • Nick says:

If anyone is thinking of doing the ‘book then FTV’ trick to extend a voucher, do it sooner rather than later. Changes are coming.

    • memesweeper says:

Thanks for the heads up @Nick

I’ve done this once already, but I’m increasingly gloomy about my xmas flights actually happening… I may need another FTV

    • BJ says:

      What changes Nick?

      • memesweeper says:

Perhaps FTV will not be available on *demand*, but only when a flight is cancelled?

        • BJ says:

          Hardly a hurdle these days.

        • TGLoyalty says:

If your flight is cancelled you’re due a full refund anyway. Obviously FTVs can work to our advantage when a 2-4-1 is involved but in the vast majority of cases an FTV is for BAs benefit.

  • meta says:

Just saw Amex FHR rate has upped property credit for two London hotels:
London Edition now includes $200 property credit (double than usual $100). & Cafe Royal has $150

    • TGLoyalty says:

Emyr is able to offer the same the last time i spoke to him.

Cafe Royal would stack nicely with the Amex offer

    • Harry T says:

FYI HJH healthcare rate for the London EDITION is £149 a night, sans breakfast.

      • TGLoyalty says:

brilliant rate. Hope you’ve taken advantage.

        • Harry T says:

Booked a few weekends! W London and Park Lane are the same price. Is EDITION best?

          • Rob says:

Totally different hotels. W is party central in Leicester Square, Sheraton Park Lane is an art deco place, fully refurbed, overlooking the park.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Depends which location you prefer but I think you’ll never get edition at that rate again but you won’t pay much more for the other two even in normal times.

  • memesweeper says:

Anyone know who you would write to or lobby for a suggestion of a country to be added to the UK travel corridors list?

    • Nick says:

Your MP is probably the best start.

    • Rhys says:

I imagine that would be pretty futile and would save myself the bother…

    • GeorgeJ says:

Start with the embassy or high commission of the country concerned.
If the are interested give them permission to use your note as evidence of demand.

  • Definitas says:

I’ve got a long haul 2-4-1 redemption booked to USA in November which I will definitely not be taking. Given the new announcement on slot waivers, I suspect BA will re re-jigging the winter timetable and may cancel my flights, saving me the £70 fee if I cancel. Am I correct in assuming that they are most likely to cancel more than 2 weeks before the flight date in order to avoid having to pay EC stipulated compensation and that I should hang on until the last 2 weeks to cancel? (I would be happy to get the voucher and the Avios back)

    • tony says:

The current rules mean that BA is allowed to claim exceptional circumstances so can cancel your flight within 2 weeks of departure and not be liable for EU261. At what point that goes away I don’t know, but I can’t see why there will be a material change to demand, so this waiver is likely to persist, too.

    • Jill (Kinkell) says:

I took the plunge and forfeited my £70 to cancel my Oct 241 to Miami . Voucher and Avios back within minutes. Cash for all the taxes and charges due sometime in next 3 weeks( as stated by chap on Gold line…only had to wait 4 mins before being answered at about 4 pm yesterday).

  • tony says:

Question about UUA. If I fly LHR-TYO-XXX (returning via TYO to LON) where the first leg is BA metal & BA code and the second leg is JL metal & BA code, can I upgrade the outbound?

I see that if I book LHR-TYO-LHR out BA metal & BA code, back JL metal BA code the website will allow me to upgrade, which surprised me.

    Thanks

    • BJ says:

If you can do it and price is right just go for it. Might be mistaken but I thought UUA was only possible on BA, IB and AA. Wonder if they have extended it, potentially very good if so.

      • tony says:

Sorry don’t think I was clear – my bad. If I book a WT+ fare LON-TYO, out BA metal BA code, back JL metal BA code, I can upgrade the outbound to club. Not the inbound (which is fine).

What surprised me was I thought because there was other metal involved, it wouldn’t be permitted. I’m now however wondering if I book LON-TYO-FUK on BA/BA then JL/BA can I upgrade the first leg? The website doesn’t show this but I can imagine it getting confused by the fact there’s no WT+ on the domestic hop or some such.

        • memesweeper says:

You could try, buy the WTP itinerary, call up to UUA, and if it doesn’t work, invoke your 24 hour cooling off period and think of another plan.

          • tony says:

Good plan but to further complicate matters, I want to book it as a holiday (I know…)

  • George K says:

Hey folks – I had a theoretical question on a possible multi-leg BA booking that would include flights on OW partners (but all booked on one PNR under BA.com).

If you had a booking like this and applied for an FTV, would the FTV cover the whole booking? Or would BA cherry pick the value of their flights out of the lot and give you a total of that?

    FAQ wasn’t clear.

    • AJA says:

It should be for the entire booking and for what you paid in cash to BA including any fees (if paid) for seat assignment.

  • TGLoyalty says:

    looking for a data point

Anyone know if you can hold a Green charge and a keep a gold charge?
