The HfP chat thread – Sunday 13th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/13/the-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-13th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Wondering if anyone has heard anything about next wave of BA flights/destinations re-starting? Specifically wondering about Cancún now, but also Costa Rica…
    TIA

    • memesweeper says:

Not heard anything about Costa Rica, it it will admit Brits. Unfortunately on the UK quarantine list so I doubt BA will restart flights until that’s sorted out.

    • Rob says:

Isn’t Iberia still flying to Costa Rica? Friend of mine is out there now and I’m sure he went on an IB redemption.

  • Andy says:

Good morning. Is there a way of being notified as soon as my flight gets cancelled? I’m concerned that American Airlines will take ages to notify me. I booked on AA6912 LHR to PHL on 5 Nov: flying on BA metal but booked through AA.

    • Grant says:

Try using Check my Trip app or similar

    • Peter K says:

      Awards wallet does I think.

    • ChrisC says:

Make sure you are using both the BA and AA apps and set them to allow notifications. As this is a BA operated flight you need to use BA to manage it anyway.

TBH I’ve found both airlines to be opretty good at notifying schedule changes / cancellations

    • Sukes says:

Kayak Trips. I’ve always been notified of all flight cancellations or schedule changes, and received the notifications before being alerted by the operator.

Just had a 2 night stay at the Voco St John’s in Solihull, which is fantastic value if you need a Midlands hotel. Rooms large and clean and look very fresh (the only odd thing was that the 2 small bathroom shelves were on the far side of the bathroom to the sink which was a bit of a faff when you needed anything). As Spire we were upgraded to a deluxe room and the drinks vouchers got us doubles of any spirit & mixer in the bar! We pre-booked the leisure facilities and had the pool to ourselves for 45 minutes which was very pleasant. The hot & cold breakfast was excellent for £10 pp.
very impressed for £45 pn. This was in the recent bogof IHG offer but rooms can still be had for £60 or 12500 points.

I can also recommend the tank driving experience at Armourgeddon in nearby Lutterworth which I’d booked for my OH & teenager. They said it was great, if you like that kind of thing!

Datapt on refund with regard to a deposit package holiday operating when a border is closed – I’ve given full details below so if not of relevance feel free to skip straight to next comment! Booked a package holiday to Abu Dhabi, direct with Etihad Holidays UK online, in Jan for departure end of Sept 2020. 20% deposit paid at time of booking with remainder due 31 Aug. Flight & hotel are operating but entry to AD is closed to air tourists & there is no obvious legal req on Etihad Hols to refund.

Had no contact from Etihad Hols since booking. Started phoning UK office about 10days before remainder payment due to be told AD team needed to contact me direct. Multiple promises of phone calls within 48hrs came to nothing. I did not pay the remainder payment so put myself in breach of contract.

Rang AD said had to be sorted by email. Told could move hol for free before 30 Sept 2021. I would have been willing to do this but I priced departures every wk for the 10mths and there was no availability of same board/rm as booked and inferior board was at least double the price of the booking.

Etihad Hols have also removed their T&C from their website around 20 June 2020 which seems highly dubious but I found means to access them via Internet Library archives.

Thankfully I had screenshot during booking that cancellation was free until mid Sept 2020, albeit it was unclear whether this was referring to the hotel part of the booking. I sent the screenshot to Etihad on 29 Aug & today Etihad has advised that deposit will be refunded although they are giving themselves up to 8wks to do so. AD border remains closed with no estimated timeframe for opening unfortunately. Not sure if I would book with Etihad Hols direct again given lack of basic documentation & their removal of their booking terms – I would not have had positive outcome without screenshots of everything at time of booking. At the moment I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt regarding receiving the cash refund.

Got an email from Tesco saying something “exciting” is coming in a couple of days, any speculation?

  • Connor says:

Email from Tesco, new Clubcard offer released on Tuesday. Any clues on what it may be?

  • Peggers says:

Data pt.: Ryanair flight they cancelled on 15/5 has finally paid out. Kept telling me I had asked for voucher – which I hadn’t.

Also, I have a flight booked EasyJet ATH-EDI in late October that was booked pre-Covid. Website showing that all EasyJet flights on this route have disappeared for October. I contacted EasyJet and they claimed the flights ‘may have sold out’. Expect this and other routes in October onwards to be withdrawn I think.

Hi All , some help / Advice on Maldives
Friend has 50 birthday April 2021 and wants special birthday – I’ve suggested Qatar flights business maybe Ex Eu – what advice would you give for the islands – wants over water villa – not concerned about activities wants total R&R
    Thanks !

    • Aston100 says:

I don’t think I’d risk an ex EU for some time.
Too risky with an unprotected positioning flight.

    • LST says:

Hi. Do they want a points resort? If not I would contact one of the Maldives specialists – they can access fantastic deals that you won’t get going direct or from most general agents. Have a look on the Tripadvisor UK Maldives forum. The last two times we have been, we went out to Gaafuu Dhaluu atoll – needs a domestic flight but for that you get splendid isolation and coral reefs that are still in half decent condition (I love snorkelling). Can recommend Ayada and Outrigger, a lot of bang for the buck.
