Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Sunday 13th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/13/the-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-13th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just bit the bullet and upgraded to Curve Metal. Does your old curve card stop working until you get the new metal one? That seems to have happened to me. Also my yearly limit has (hopefully temporarily) reset but gone down from £500k to £1k !!

    • Gareth says:

What are you spending 500k a year in through curve?!

    • Spk says:

Surprising. My old card worked until I activated the new one. And there was no change to limit.

      • Jonathan says:

I’m still using my old card despite upgrading to metal 5 months ago. Was planning to activate when I got close to £100k limit & hope that limits reset as often reported. They’ve subsequently upped me to £300k which is plenty of head room but I still prefer the old plastic to the chunky metal one.

As an aside, after giving me a decent limit I now actually use it exclusively for non-AmEx spend as they presumably want rather than saving it for HMRC etc.

I can’t seem to find anyway to activate my new card (and they didn’t reset my credit limit) any pointers appreciated

    • Char char says:

Well in some cases the old card stops working straight away and you have to wait for the new one, I think it depends on the person who processes the new card as first time it worked fine until I activated the new one

Rob: any plans to do some worked examples with Virgin airmiles and the companion/upgrade voucher, as you have with Avios as per the below article?
    https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/01/10/what-is-an-avios-point-worth-4/
(Or perhaps thinking about one specific scenario but considering all the various options the voucher now gives?)

I’ve tried recently to work a few examples through myself, but still not entirely sure I’ve got to an ‘optimal’ answer yet…

    • Rob says:

Could do, I admit, although the numbers wouldn’t be hugely different from the Avios article as the mileage and tax numbers are not hugely different with Virgin.

  • S879 says:

Does curve work for international Western Union transfers? I read somewhere that WU have blacklisted Curve. My payments a few months ago were declined but I’d still like to know.
