Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 8th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/08/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-8th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does any one know how long BA refunds are taking to come through on amex. I have been waiting for 4 weeks for a 2 4 1 first class tickets, flight cancelled by BA. I have received Avios so far Thanks

    • Matt says:

I received the taxes back on first 2 4 1 tickets 3 days after they were canceled around 3 weeks ago.

    • BLT says:

I ended up waiting over 6 weeks, then contacted barefundhelper on flyertalk. Refund received 2-3 days after that.

      • Jonathan says:

BARefundHelper is no more unfortunately. He/she posted a few weeks ago that they have ceased the service.

  • Munch says:

Has anyone had problems referring from a Gold Business card. For some reason there is no referral link from my account? When I link through a referral offer page its states “Unfortunately your Account is currently not eligible to participate in this programme”
I contacted chat and they have raised a ticket. Might call Brighton tomorrow to see if they can resolve.
What is the current offer for a referral on Gold Business? I might upgrade to platinum Business to maximise the referrals. Has anyone had any experience upgrading from Gold Business to Platinum Business?

    • Connor says:

Same showing on my free BA Amex. Not had any offers at all on the card recently either, seems like they don’t like me for some reason.

      • JA says:

You aren’t the only one, they don’t like me either. I had to contact them to get the shop small offer. When I asked Amex they said that all offers are selected individually based on our previous purchases. So why I had an offer for jewellery when I never buy any I don’t know.

        • RedEyeDonkey says:

I’ve been cut off too on all offers. Same nonsense answer about why. Mine came right at the start of lockdown – no offers since – and they slashed all my limits. Not mattered given the level of post-lockdown spend here but… might lead to some reduction in my AMEX relationship if they don’t fix it. They don’t seem to care though…

          • Connor says:

Exact same for me. Limit slashed from 13k to 5k back in May even with consist 7-15k a month put through the card. Got that stupid jewellery offer like JA did as well. It’s as if we’re on a special naughty list.

          • Rahaney says:

Same here, no offers on my PRGC, had to manually get them to add shop small. They said to wait 60 days for the card to spit out new offers, denied anything wrong with the card…

          • TGLoyalty says:

The offers thing is strange. I think IT has been changed and something not quite right.

Having never had a new card show 0 offers for a prolonged period after quite a few transactions. I’m now on my 3rd supp (across different main cardholders in the family) that has 0 offers, not even small shop. 1 was only fixed by requesting a replacement after being “lost”

  • Aston100 says:

Does anyone know why the black IHG card was closed to be applicants a few months ago?
Do we feel it will reopen?

I need a decent points generating card to replace my BAPP. The white IHG just isn’t man enough.
I don’t fly Virgin and don’t have any confidence in their air miles so that one is ruled out. I don’t think there’s anything significant left in scope for me?

    • Peter K says:

Not many other options but there is the Miles&more card if you fancy dipping into another airline.

      • Aston100 says:

Thanks. Lufthansa and Swiss fly from my local airport, so there is some usage for the air miles.
Do you have any experience of what the card is like when it comes to being used to topup Revolut and suchlike? Or when used with a free Curve to fund other purchases?

        Thanks

        • J says:

The Diners Club card is obviously of very little use. The MasterCard (with Curve) regularly let me down but I was mostly trying to use it abroad – a pre paid Mastercard, via Curve and abroad, no surprise really… So I cancelled it and just use Hilton with Curve.

          • Aston100 says:

Thanks. Guess I just stick to the free white IHG card until something new comes along.

        • bazza says:

Get the virgin one and send the points to IHG if thats your preference

    • Rob says:

      Honestly have no idea.

    • bazza says:

I know that must be a pain, takes a while to build up points even with the LARGE MS spend we are doing with metal curve. I am happy I got both cards. Wish I had that hilton one though. That would be fine for huge transfers

  • Tom says:

If my BA membership calendar month is Jan every year, when do I have to collect the 450TP for Silver? Jan 2021 – 2022?

  • DJ says:

Currently have Marriot Gold, and still waiting for the status match to Platinum with my IHG Spire.

If I book some stays with Marriot now, will I still get recognised as Platinum if the status match came through before check-in?

  • Lady London says:

By all means accept a negative test result as the best we can know about the person’s state of health even though we know tests still have some inaccuracy.

But with symptoms, going into a closed environment with other people, the symptoms trump the test.

I know I am a bit cowardly!! Ta for not making me feel I’m being too much of a wazzock.
