Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 8th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/08/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-8th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hotels . Com seem to be offering an extra night stamp if you book through the app, just had an email.

  • Aston100 says:

I’ve got a couple hundred quid in my Monese account, waiting for an Amazon giftcard offer, but haven’t seen one since perhaps the start of the year.
Before I xfer this back into my bank and close Monese down, can anyone advise if Monese is actually useful for anything? they don’t seem to accept credit card topups, and I don’t think I can pay my IHG or Amex cards either.

    Thanks.

    • xcalx says:

Which plan are you on. Could you get the premium plan to work for you. ie post office and pay point (if these are still an option) If you have not used the free codes for premium, google will find them or maybe someone here has a link.

      • mark2 says:

You can no longer use cards to top up at PO (please someone say it has changed).
You can upgrade and downgrade monthly e.g. I am about to spend £14.95 to be able to spend £5000 (the monthly limit) on by BAPP and earn 241.

        • xcalx says:

It was pre lockdown that I last used PO is the PP option still working. I need to give Curve a break

          • mark2 says:

            yes

          • xcalx says:

Is the PP option still 2 x £250 per day . Thanks. That’s what I was doing back before lockdown

          • mark2 says:

Actually £249 per load for PP, £500 per day for Monese

          • xcalx says:

            Thanks again.

          • Seen8 says:

All of these routes make no sense unless you are on a Premium plan. I got stung a couple of times trying to top up having forgotten by Premium code no longer worked.

Not really sure what the USP of Monese is in any case anymore – seems like a bit of a redundant product considering the likes of Monzo, Starling, Revolut.

Happy to be corrected if other people have found useful avenues for this…

        • Chrisasaurus says:

How are you spending with bapp ? PP elsewhere?

      • TGLoyalty says:

Can still be topped up with up to £1k via Curve every calendar month

        • mark2 says:

useful when you are advised of a gift card offer, is that ever happens again. (apologies for the full stop)

        • Mr. AC says:

I assuming topped up from.. .something? Without attracting fees?

    • xcalx says:

      Try 1MONTHFREE

    • mark2 says:

You can send payments to Amex via BACS (see statement for details). Have not tried IHG but you can use any card so no need.
BACS payments also much cheaper than BillHop.

    • Nick_C says:

Its another option for getting £200 from an ATM abroad. I would move the money out but keep the account open in case you find a use for it in future.

    • Amber Lynn says:

      give it to charity

  • Henry says:

Hit my Bapp 2for1 companion voucher target today.
I’ve had the Bapp card for about 3 months, if i cancel and downgrade to the free card is the fee refunded pro-rata?
Also is it worth the hassle of downgrading then upgrading next year again?
How much do u save on average?

    Thank you

    • Genghis says:

You’ll save about £150 but then you’d lose the ability to spend on the card, earning 1.5 avios / £. Are you eligible for other sign up bonuses, ie Amex plat? Work out what you want. Put it this way, I’ve never kept a BAPP after I’ve earned the voucher.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yes pro rata refund and I will say close it and sign up whenever you need another 2-4-1.

Others may suggest that Amex is tightening up on new approvals so there’s a risk

      • RedEyeDonkey says:

They definitely are. I have a high-mid income, totally clean credit, AMEX decline on reapply for a card. Just holding all my cards now until they resume normal lending.

  • Stagger Lee says:

Ilm sur ethis has been discussed before but can anyone recommend thw safest and cheaest way to trigger a 241 quickly by booking something that i can cancel and get refunded later? My year isn’t up for a couple of months and but If i do it before the end of this month I can get the 6 months extension.

    Cheers

    • Connor says:

Reserve some expensive things from Argos, (iPhones, TV’s etc) wait for the voucher to come through and cancel all the reservations. Job done.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Buy gift cards from your fav supermarket where you’ll spend it over the next month or Top up amazon.

If you really don’t have the cash flow to support that then buy anything expensive that can be returned for a refund. Avoid flights and hotels as you may struggle to get a prompt refund.

      • Stagger Lee says:

Cash flow is OK at the moment, mainly because I’ve not stopped working and haven’t really been anywhere for 6 months so store &/or Amazon sound like decent options.

I’ll see where I am in two weeks and sort it then.

        Cheers

  • DK says:

Is it me so SeatSpy is totally broken?

  • Lashious says:

hello, late to the party but are the business class meals still boxes, looking long haul to BKK, many thanks!

    • Amber Lynn says:

No. but even if they aren’t they have changed in last three days, the meals still taste like cardboard on BA.

      • Lashious says:

so you are saying that they aren’t in cardboard boxes any longer? Will they be hot meals though?

        • TGLoyalty says:

Same old card oars box slop ex LHR May or may not have a box on the inbound.

  • TGLoyalty says:

Hear Welsh has stepped down effective today …

  • babyg says:

    Is my man math right?

Looking to book a single club tix to Seychelles return
    1. Cash fare is £2462
    2. Avios is 137,500 + £622
    3. Booking PREM and upgrading both legs to club is 55k avios and £1072

Option 3 seems the best option given im saving 82,500 avios for £449, e.g i am buying avios for aprox .54p upgrading from prem

or have i calculated something wrong?

    • Jonathan says:

      You’re correct unless booking for 2 & you have a 241.

    • BJ says:

Depends if you value flexibility in which case 2 would normally be best but then everything is sort of flexible these days. With 3 you will also earn PY avios and TP so your net avios outlay is less than you stated. These flights can usually be changed for around £280 (unless that has changed in past year or so) plus fare difference plus £35. You need to settle your attitude to flexibility and TP before comparing value. Then there is also the cash-rich versus avios-rich element to factor in.

      • babyg says:

Hmmm interesting point(s) BJ, i assumed the book+upgrade fell into the same category as an avios booking and was a simple £35 to cancel? Worst case i have the book with confidence to fall back on currently. I had not factored in the 10k miles too.

        • BJ says:

No, I’m afraid not. The t&c of the reservation are those of the revenue PY flight and remain so throughout. However, once upgraded using avios they superimpose the avios conditions including £35 change fee on top too (simplest way I can describe it in few words). There was a glitch for a while whereby we got the CW avios and not PY avios as we should which made it even better but I believe that has been totally fixed now. Good luck for your trip whichever option you choose.
