The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 8th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/08/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-8th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hi

Re the process of applying for a BA future travel voucher.

Anyone got examples of how long the current wait time is from cancelling a flight to receiving a voucher?

    Thanks

    • John says:

I requested for 2 bookings, one yesterday and one today. Both vouchers arrived in the inbox within 2 minutes of requesting them.

      • BrianN says:

Thanks. I’m tempted to cancel for a voucher and rebook at the cheaper rate but as availability is low (only two seats) it feels risky. Chances of the seats being sold today are slim but it’s just the lack of knowing for absolutely sure the voucher would arrive almost instantly

        • AJA says:

Try booking the flights as a BA Holiday including a hotel. Then you only have to pay a deposit which will secure the flights. Then apply for a FTV cancelling your existing booking. Then apply the FTV to the new holiday booking.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the handful of recent ‘Best seat on a BA flight’ reviews please? Tried searching without success! Ta

    Hi

Re the value of a BA future travel voucher.

Can you part use a voucher? E.g. if I rebooked for a fare that was cheaper would you retain the excess for future use or would they refund you the excess?

The voucher would be part avios and part cash.

    Thanks

    • GaryC says:

Yes, you can use part of a voucher, and have done that a few times in the past couple of months. The difference is refunded in the form of a new voucher, unless it falls below a certain amount (£20 IIRC) in which case it’s refunded as cash. It can lead to quite a convoluted booking process on the phone as I’ve discovered.

    • Stanley says:

Did this yesterday. Had to add avios, but had £30 cash leftover which they refunded to my payment card.

  • Tom says:

Wonder if anyone can help as I’ve had various conflicting answers so far… I have an Amex companion ticket that expires mid March. I am being told that I can’t book flights using the voucher that would then qualify for the book with confidence guarantee, so I essentially have to use it or lose it – is that right?

    • Rob says:

      No, that’s rubbish.

Book any old random redemption, cancel it for a voucher and the voucher is effectively good until April 2022. What MIGHT be an issue is changing passenger names, so whatever dummy booking you make should be done with the person you ultimately intend to fly with.

      • Tom says:

        Thanks Rob, much appreciated.

      • Wollhouse says:

Rob, on that note, what happens if you book a cash flight for two, and you cancel under their book with confidence and receive a voucher, can that voucher be used for anything and anyone or do you have to rebook with the same passenger names? Thx

        • Rob says:

Each passenger gets their own voucher irrespective of who pays, I think, on cash tickets. This is clearly not going down well with some people.

          • Wollhouse says:

Hmm, yes. It’s all very well if you’re married or travelling with a long term partner but if you’re single and travelling with a friend or “new” partner having to reschedule to months in the future, a name change might be required;)!

      • eligold says:

would this work for my Lloyds upgrade voucher too?
they extended my voucher (which originally expired in Feb) to September 31.
although if I cancel for a voucher, I don’t see why they should extend the voucher

  • L Allen says:

QQ re the BAEC status extension (sorry if this has been asked before!). My points year ends on 8 January – will the tier points collected this year be carried over to next year, or zeroed out? It’d be great to have that head start at the beginning of next year to make sure I reach Gold again but I suspect that’s a step too far for BA 🙂

    • Tocsin says:

Unless BA do something generous and unheard of, TPs will be zeroed. 🙁

I hope they are thinking about something for 2020/21…

  • BrianN says:

    Hi

Re the BA voucher rebooking scenarios. How would it work if your voucher is avios and cash but the new booking is just cash?

For example: voucher value 65000 avios + £900 cash. New booking all cash: £1300.

Any ideas what would happen under this scenario?

    Thanks

When we bought our flights with LH my 13 year old was charged adult fare ( the younger 2 paid less), was I just dreaming it or we can claim something back?

  • Sunguy says:

    Point of interest – maybe….

My Halloween – Fri 13 NovLH flight – FRA YVR has just had a change from 747-4 to A330…..
