Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 7th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/07/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-7th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

About to hit 10k spend on the BAPP. Once I have the 2-4-1 I will downgrade to the free card – does my balance have to be cleared to be downgraded?

    • Anna says:

No, it effectively remains the same account. Apparently you now have to speak to Brighton to process the application.

  • Michael C says:

Could I theoretically put my visiting m-in-law on our BA household account before she flies, in order to receive the points for her miles flown?!

    • memesweeper says:

Only if she theoretically lives with you during the period of her membership 😉

I think the minimum period to be in/out of an account is six months, so if she leaves the household account, she takes any unspent points with her.

      • Jonathan says:

Miles are also spent in proportion to individual balance so if you’ve got lots & she’ll be earning 5,000 then you won’t get much benefit till you’ve emptied HHA. You’d also need to tell her to change her address to yours (& remember she has when/if she calls BA).

    • ChrisC says:

The points still sit in her individual BAEC account – they don’t get credited to yours.

      • Michael C says:

But don’t they also go to the household total, which can then be redeemed for tickets for other household members?

        • Anna says:

Yes but as Jonathan pointed out, you can’t choose to use her points, they are taken pro-rata, so hers will only be exhausted if you are using ALL the HHA avios for a booking.

          • Genghis says:

But like I said, easy to get around. I wouldn’t consider this a barrier.

  • Hugo says:

Do we think Qatar will be running more 2for1 business deals in the future with all this going on?

    • Lady London says:

Yes. It’s a frequently recurring promotion by QR.
They won’t stop it because who doesn’t want to fill 2 seats in one booking?

  • Travel Strong says:

What are peoples experiences with hitting a £50k Curve limit?

My earlier limits increased automatically no problem.
I’ve now had a 50k limit for almost a year though.
    I’ll hit 50k today.
Have Curve increased anyone 50k limit when hit it?
Do Curve review limits at any set point in the month?

I am happy to upgrade to metal to ‘reset’ the clock – but would be even happier with a high limit!

    • rams1981 says:

vary your spend and ask for an increase

      • Travel Strong says:

I have £28 left on my £50000 limit in which to vary my spend 😀
There’s no getting away from my 9:1 ratio of MS to normal spend.

    • Travel Strong says:

P.S. I know people have higher limits generally, and I know it is too late for me to change any spending habits – so just interested if there is any chance that I will suddenly get a better limit!

      • Genghis says:

Unlikely IMO. You should have left a k for ordinary spend.

      • TGLoyalty says:

If you upgrade to metal you’ll get a fresh limit to do some varied spend and request a higher limit on.

      • Doug says:

Just ask, I was shocked they upped mine, it was almost entirely Amex and NS&I.

        • BP says:

I got upped to 500k with very little MS except some amex. Now plan to make use of that limit with Ernie.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I had 50k limit, got 2k close to limit then they increased it to 500k without me needing to ask.

    • Connor says:

I had done 20k MS in a month and hit my 100k limit. Asked and they upped it to 350k no questions asked.

  • MadeUpName says:

Hi, quick data point, I just received a charge back from curve about 7 weeks after it was raised. It was from cancelled Aegean airlines flights when they wanted to only give me a voucher.

It’s sitting as Curve cash now – can I just use this to pay amex? Or does it flag as any issues at the amex end? If it does I’ll just withdraw it as cash over a few days. I am legacy curve black if that makes a difference.

  • Spk says:

Received email from BA on 10k bonus avios for signing up to the free BA Amex card.

  • Daniel says:

I shopped at a store which specifically had Amex Shop Small branding in the windows but didn’t receive £5 back on my purchase of more than £10 from Amex. Is it worth contacting them?

    • AJA says:

I think you should chase Amex on the expectation that Amex will say no. My shop small credits seem to have posted the day after the original payment appears on my statement.

    • Genghis says:

You can try but Amex much more likely not to give the credit than in the past.

    • Travel Strong says:

I called Amex by phone with 1 x case of this happening (transaction in late June, and still no credit), they logged it for a manager to approve – and within 48hrs I had the £5 credit. Retailer clearly on shop small map, and a transaction on my statement with no associated £5 credit. Very clear cut.

      • Pid says:

Same here, they credited two that did not post without any fuss as a payment aggregator had been used by the retailer.

  • BJ says:

Perfectly-timed travel restriction from Glorious Grant Shapps: Ena Sharples could have done a better job than this lot!

Ena was a formidable no nonsense woman. Straight talking and full of common sense.
If only our politicians had one ounce of her character.
