The HfP chat thread – Monday 7th September

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/07/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-7th-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I have a flight to Dubai which I’m considering cancelling. It’s booked return in WT+ for cash but I upgraded the outbound leg to business using avios. If I cancel what will I get back with the voucher? I paid £53 in taxes with the 24000 avios for the upgrade. Thanks.

And, do I need to call to cancel?

    • AJA says:

Is the flight in the Book With Confidence rules ie purchased after 3 March for travel until 31 August 2021? Or is it departing before 30 Sep 2020? If you want a FTV you can do it online. It will be for everything including the one-way upgrade to Club using 24k Avios.

I am not sure you will get all your cash back if you cancel outright – that will only happen if you bought a fully flexible WT+ fare and it allows you to cancel for no charge. Not sure what class the upgrade to Club using Avios will be and if that affects the ability to cancel. If you do cancel you are entitled to a refund of your APD even if it is a non-refundable fare.

If you want to cancel and are prepared to wait, do nothing, wait for BA to cancel your flight then you will be entitled to everything back. If that happens you will have to call unless you are prepared to take a FTV in which case that can be done online up to 1 hour before scheduled departure though I would not wait that close to trigger it.

FYI, I’ve booked a range of Heathrow Express tickets recently. It doesn’t look like there are any advance tickets available for any month I’ve tried (December 2020 through to March 2021).

Has Heathrow Express suspended advance tickets for now? They’re still advertised as being available on the website, just the reality is that it doesn’t seem to exist.

    • lumma says:

Can you book Heathrow Express tickets that far in advance? Thought most train operators are 14 weeks max ahead? I know LNER allows 28 weeks but that’s the exception rather than the rule

      • Simon Schus says:

You can 🙂 For some reason, I’m not able to book them after weeks of not being able to book them (like actual weeks, I’ve been checking a couple of days a week).

Typo edit: “For some reason, I’m *now* able to book them after weeks of not being able to book them (like actual weeks, I’ve been checking a couple of days a week).”
