How to access some Lufthansa airport lounges with American Express Platinum

If you are travelling through Frankfurt or Munich Airport in September, American Express Platinum has extended its deal with Lufthansa to allow cardholders into its lounges.

The Platinum Card from American Express comes with a lot of airport lounge access benefits:

Using Lufthansa airport lounges with American Express Platinum

You get two Priority Pass cards, each of which allows two people unlimited access to 1,300 airport lounges globally (so a family of four is covered)

You get access to all Plaza Premium lounges with a guest, even those not in Priority Pass, by showing your Platinum card

You get access to Delta lounges, when flying with Delta, by showing your Platinum card (no guests allowed)

You and your guests get access to American Express’s own network of Centurion airport lounges, which are primarily in the US but which is also coming to Heathrow Terminal 3 in 2020/21

You can access 13 other American Express-brand airport lounges in Stockholm, Delhi, Mumbai, Mexico City x 3, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Monterrey x 2 (Mexico, not CA!), Melbourne, Sydney and Toluca – full details are here

A lesser known benefit is the relatively recent deal that American Express has with Lufthansa in Germany.

Here are the participating lounges if you are flying Economy:

Frankfurt: Business Lounge, T1 Concourse B by Gates B44-B48

Frankfurt: Business Lounge, T1 Concourse B by Gates B24-B28

Munich: Business Lounge, Terminal 2 Satellite (Non-Schengen area)

Munich: Business Lounge, Terminal 2 Satellite (Schengen area)

Here are the additional participating lounges if you are flying Business:

Frankfurt: Senator Lounge, T1 Concourse B

Munich: Senator Lounge, Terminal 2 Satellite (Non-Schengen area)

Munich: Senator Lounge, Terminal 2 Satellite (Schengen area)

Access is NOT a total free-for-all:

You must be flying on a Lufthansa Group airline (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian)

You cannot bring a guest, although obviously your partner can come with you if they have a free supplementary Platinum card on your account

If you have a Centurion Card, you can also access the First Class lounges in the satellite area of T2 in Munich Airport and T1 Concourse B in Frankfurt Airport and there are no rules over the class of your ticket.

The offer has been rolled over multiple times. At present, American Express has rolled it over again until 30th September 2020.

The satellite terminal in Munich is closed right now. Officially Amex isn‘t accepted for accessing the lounges in the main terminal. Last time I asked nicely and got into the Senator lounge as a one time exception. I did have a business class ticket and Frequent Traveller status, so it was merely a question of which lounge I can go into. The food offering is the same, only the selection of gins is nicer in the Senator lounge. This week I‘ll be using my new TAP gold status.

Hopefully travelling as a family of 4 through Munich next year in LH premium economy. I was planning on taking the plat card for lounge access. How much better are the LH lounges than those through priority pass? We’ll have about 5 hours to kill, but will have to pay €25 each for the kids to enter the LH lounge vs being free guests on priority pass.

  No idea what they are currently serving. In general LH lounges are very clinical, like a hospital waiting room, and I am not a huge fan. Doubt you’d get £25 of extra value over PPass.

  The problem with the priority pass lounges are that they are in terminal 1, but all LH flights leave from terminal 2. You have sufficient time, but have to make sure to be back in terminal 2 in time.
  
  As a family of 4 you need 4 platinum cards. You cannot take any guests and it’s strictly enforced. Occasionally, I do encounter people who throw a tantrum at the lounge because they can’t understand that “no guest allowed” means “no guest allowed”.
  
  Right now, catering in the priority pass lounges in Munich is slightly better than in the LH lounge. You basically get a cold Lufthansa Business class meal in the PP lounge, in the LH lounge it’s a hot soup.
  
  In non-corona times the food offering in the LH business lounge is significantly better and comparable to the LHR Galleries lounge, just optimized for a Southern German palate.

    Just saw that you said kids have to pay. So ignore the part of needing 4 platinum cards. Be prepared to have this in writing, though, as paid access isn’t very common and the staff might not know how to process payments.
    
    They do have a folder that has one page for access rules for the platinum card and they can look up the rules in the LH intranet. Updates to the intranet are usually delayed a little, so I would expect issues with accessing the lounge right now until maybe Thursday or Friday. It’s not a good idea to travel in the few days when this offer has just been rolled over again.

      As we are premium economy there is the option for paid access. A lot will change before next year so I’ll keep an eye on what’s going on just before travel (if it happens!)

There is a lounge in Oslo Gardermoen that accepts Amex Plat as well, only mentioned on Amex plat website norway!

In effect, it’s a lounge “upgrade” at the LH hub airports. Fly economy which doesn’t come with any lounge access, get access to business lounge. Fly business, get access to Senator lounge. (Senator is the top tier FF lounge, sort of equivalent to Galleries First at LHR).

Can anyone tell me if Amex Platinum Travel Insurance cover has only ever been when the holiday was paid for by Amex or is this a new change? Thank you.

  The reason is that I seem to remember it changed but they changed it back some time last year but looking at my policy doc for an upcoming trip it specifically states it must be FULLY paid for with the Platinum card and some might, like me be under the impression all trips, regardless of payment, are covered. They seem not to be.

  To be fully covered for everything then you must pay with any personal Amex issued Amex. That’s always been the case
