We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/09/01/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-1st-september/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I got a avios booking i want to change the date for, how long does a future travel voucher take to come through and can i book it online? Thinking it might save me the cancellation charge?

    • Anna says:

Some avios bookings can currently be changed via MMB, but I’m not sure if this is only if BA has cancelled your flight. You can cancel your flight and get the FTV online but I think you have to call to make the re-booking at the moment.

  • Charlieface says:

Anyone got any ideas on this one?

Trying to book a ticket for my sis and family on KLM. All sites reporting klm.com at a certain price, when I go there the price shows up, I select flights, enter names, and then the price shoots up.
Tried clearing cookies, logged in, logged out, different email from account, no luck.

Wierdly ITA Matrix doesn’t shows the lower price but somewhere in the middle.

    • AJA says:

Are you sure that the KLM site is offering the same booking classes as ITA Matrix and the other websites? It could be that KLM has limited availability at the lower prices that the other websites are showing and is only showing you ticket prices in more expensive booking classes. You could try booking for 1 person and see what KLM shows. Trouble is that means multiple PNRs.

      • Charlieface says:

Tried just 1 person, also tried it few times over the last few days, changing dates slightly.
I tried booking through momondo and worldairfares, both errored out before payment stage.

        • Lady London says:

It’s not like you to get stumped by anything @Charlieface! 🙂

Sounds like there’s an out of sync between KL’s live booking engine and what they gave last update to OTA’s. So when the machine goes to book it fails the match.

If Kayak doesn’t find the cheapest on everything (I try more than one country as results can differ) then maybe try tomorrow?

KL also codeshares… a .lot… with Air France and DL. Is it worth checking those for flights where the codeshare portion of the KL-operated flight might be available?

          • Charlieface says:

No klm.com is also messed up. I’m a developer and I honestly don’t know how they mess up this badly.
Then again, for those who understand, there are two hard things in programming…

  • Simon Schus says:

    Hi all,

I’ve got an international trip October 2020 after an international trip. I wanted to check something out about hotel policies/requirements on return to UK.

As I will be traveling internationally, I will likely be quarantining on the return to the UK per UK law as I’d be visiting a country that is not exempt. I was planning on spending a night in your hotel prior to onward travel.

Is that permitted? Do I need to do anything in advance to let the hotel know about my international travel?

If permitted, I would, of course, go straight to my room and use digital check-in. I would aim to quarantine in my room and avoid all public areas to the extent possible (other than entering and exiting the hotel).

    • Stu N says:

Yes, this is fine. There’s a section on the guidance covering this situation and a space in the form for you to put details of any necessary overnight stay on your return journey. Personally I”d call the hotel as a courtesy but I don’t think there is any requirement to do so.

  • James says:

Whats the most anyone has taken out of the ATM, using Curve, in 1 month? Conscious there is suppose to be a £200 limit before charged which Curve doesn’t seem to follow but interested to see if anyone has taken this to the extreme?

    • Doug M says:

Regular poster said previously that he’d been warned by Curve over exceeding limits, but not charged.

      • James says:

I have seen that post too. Can’t remember exactly where but am interested in the levels of ATM people have been doing before any warnings etc.

        • Genghis says:

Back in the “old days” I was doing about £5k a month (£250 / day x 20 working days) and got temporarily banned.

          • Genghis says:

            Never charged though

          • BJ says:

Thought for the day: Currently, earning miles and points is depressingly easy but redeeming them is depressingly difficult! One year ago, who’d ever have thought it?

          • Freddy says:

My thoughts entirely – I’m minded to start saving nectar points or summat as I’m stockpiling avios points/virgin points

          • Stu N says:

            Agreed. V depressing.

          • Axel says:

Redeeming at Hampton by Hilton Edinburgh West End is 13000 points on and off. Last year a mattress run to Malaysia or Thailand was about the same.

Tempted to book to maintain diamond and offer some homeless guys the room.

          • BrianW says:

I literally work a couple of minutes away once or twice a week, I’d happily ‘check you in’ if you need and can book on a day I’m in the city.

  • rk says:

Has anyone applied for a supplementary card/additional card for themselves on IHG (Black) Premium? and been successful?

    • Colin JE says:

Sorry, although I have an IHG black card there didn’t seem to be much point in getting a supplementary and their customer service is so iffy I couldn’t face the hassle.

    • DJ says:

I have been trying to get my limit increased from 1000 to something higher without success.

There’s nothing wrong with my credit profile, but they just refuse to increase it 🙁

      • Colin JE says:

Agreed, they also gave me a paltry 1k limit, which is useless for a £99 fee card that needs you to spend £10k in a year for a free night! I had to argue with them and make a formal complaint to get it reviewed (increased x4). To be fair they did increase it again after 6 months after I requested another increase. But I’d rather they had straight refused, or better still, called and discussed it, when I first applied, rather than all that hassle.

        • Lumma says:

I’ve had the free card with a £4k limit, applied for the paid card and got £1k. Would be simple call to amex to get the limits reallocated but not with Creation

    • Char Char says:

      yes last month

    • Lev441 says:

Yes – I added one online pretty easily using the website.. but I couldn’t order a second supplementary so you may only be allowed one.

    • Carl says:

I requested a supplementary card when applying for the card just over a year ago, supplementary card was issued and I was given a £7.5k limit with no issues. Had my 1st free night voucher in July but agreed with the comments about iffy customer service.

  • Aston100 says:

Hi, looking for advice on what options are genuinely available to me.
Booked DUB > JNB with Egyptair. It’s a brand new route and there was a decent 50%+ discount for Economy during the coming festive period.
Route has been cancelled (or rather, didn’t actually get launched afterall).
Egyptair proactively want to give me a refund and are being a bit negative about a reroute.
They’ve said they’ll consider a reroute from LHR, but it needs to be approved by management.
I’ve asked for a reroute from my local UK airport via a star alliance partner airline. This has been dismissed out of hand. Shame, as there are some decent flight times, which also lead to an extra 2 days in SA as a result.
So it’s a full refund, or a possibility of a reroute only from LHR (which is the nearest airport to Dublin that they still fly out from).

Can I firmly request they put me on a Star Alliance partner? Not sure what my rights are given the original flight was from Dublin and I live in England.

I suspect they are trying to avoid reroutes as the original price from DUB was so cheap.

    Thanks.

    • Aston100 says:

Oh just to add, if I check tickets for DUB > JNB on the airline website, it shows a Lufthansa flight to Munich, connecting with an Egyptair flight to Cairo, before the longhaul sector on the original flight to JNB. So they are selling a route that utilises a star alliance partner. Hence I’m wondering why they are refusing to use one from my local UK airport.

      • Aston100 says:

Frankfurt, not Munich. Why doesn’t this updated forum software allow me to edit posts?

        • Rob says:

Because people would abuse it and change something already posted to make those who replied look bad. I don’t know any forum which allows this.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Most forums allow you to edit but will clearly state it’s edited.

          • Rob says:

            This isn’t a forum 🙂

          • ChrisC says:

I post on the Washington Post but you need an account for that.

You are allowed to edit your posts but only within 5 minutes of posting your original comments. Useful for correcting spelling mistakes but equally you can’t remove or edit what you wrote to change the meeting 5 hours later.

          • Aston100 says:

Sounds like Tripadvisor forums. 5 minutes to make an edit.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Only replying to your comment about forums Rob 😉

        • ChrisC says:

What have you actually asked of them re the re-route?

If it’s some airy fairy “would you mind awfully” and not being specific or have you given them something to actually work on with specific flight numbers?

I’ve often found being quite specific gets better results.

          EU261/2004 provisions still apply

      • Lady London says:

I think it’s something to do with this particular airline not having a “published fare” from your proposed origin.

You only have a right from DUB. Frankly I’d take LHR and fund my own connection to it…. it’s Egyptair and I think you are lucky they are working with you given the way a lot of airlines are behaving currently. Looks like they would give you the DUB-FRA-JNB though if they’re selling it.

Why not make it easy for them to work with you? take either DUB or LHR

        • Aston100 says:

Hi, I’m satisfied with an LHR reroute, and for the money I spent, it’s a genuine bargain. I also no longer need positioning flights to Dublin or an overnight hotel.
However, I was wondering how far they’d go in regards to a reroute, on the basis that when my LHR > CGK route was cancelled a while ago, the airline flew me out of a regional airport with a partner airline in order to connect with a long haul sector from AMS instead. That reroute worked out very well for me and got me almost an extra 2 days in Indonesia.

I’m not ungrateful, and am happy to take the LHR option here, if they allow it, but just wanting to see what else is available to me, especially from the local airport, given my original flight started from a different country.

          Thanks.

  • Matthew says:

Quick question re BA companion vouchers. I have two vouchers and want to book club and economy seats. 2 of us in club and 2 in economy. I don’t think I can do it in one booking so will it let me use the companion voucher without me on the booking for the economy seats (despite being on same flight)? Hope that makes sense. It would make things a whole lot easier if they released 4 club seats of course!

    • Chris Heyes says:

Matthew BA do release 4 Club seats (depending on route)
I’ve just booked 3 Club Suites to Denver for next Aug
although none showing on both seat finder sights for next Aug
checked on BA site for July then progressed arrow to Aug club seats then popped up

      • Matthew says:

True but at 355 in advance to Tokyo, normally only 2 club released, especially during Olympics/Paralympics.

    • Lady London says:

No if it’s your voucher your name has to be on one of the seats as a traveller, for each booking on which a voucher is used.

If you do end up making separate bookings, then after they are done it is possible to ring BA and ask for them to do a “TCP” (To Complete Party) on your bookings, which establishes a link between them. Doesn’t guarantee you will be seated together etc., but just might help.

      • Matthew says:

        Ok thanks for info. 👍

        • Anna says:

You CAN make a booking for 4 people if the 2 vouchers are in your name, but you’d all have to be in the same cabin on each leg. So you could all go CW out and Y back, but not split the cabin types on either leg.
Is there an airport which you could connect from where you are seeing 4 CWseats being released?

  • pointsarb says:

Can anyone confirm if using ‘beardy’s’ premium card to pay their favourite black hotel premium card results in any charges on beardy please? Usually take the curvy route however wondered if that is even necessary? Thanks

    • Mie P says:

Why do people feel the need to talk in bloody stupid code? Just ask the question you want an answer to in the best English you can muster.

      • AJA says:

I think it’s funny 🙂 It’s creative and we understand what’s being asked without being blatantly obvious.

        • BrightonReader says:

And it’s also very off putting to a lot of casual readers who see that sort of post and think this site is just for ‘insiders’ and then never come back.

Just ask the question and stop with the ridiculous games.

      • Aston100 says:

      Not necessary to use curve
