The HfP chat thread – Monday 31st August

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/31/the-hfp-chat-thread-monday-31st-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Think I know the answer but what are the chances of successfully suing Virgin for the interest you lost on the money they took 3 months to refund? I don’t use Virgin but a colleague seems 100% adamant he will be successful and that everyone else in the office should do the same.

    • Jonathan says:

Think you’d need to get a judgment against them in small claims court before you could add interest, certainly at the higher rate (8% + BoE base).

    • Gavin says:

You wouldn’t be losing much interest considering the best easy access account is paying just over 1% at the moment. In 3 months thats only about 0.25%, so if it was a £1000 refund you were waiting on, you’d be suing them for £2.50. Doesn’t seem with the hassle, especially as you’ll lose so much more than that in fees if not successful!

      • Lady London says:

statutory interest claimable is still currently the rate. Claim pro rata to that p.a. by nunber of days.

Main reasons I’d encourage adding it to any claim is

        (1) anything that makes the sum to be refunded even slightly hugher tends to encourage more rapid settlement and

        (2) currently an airline has nothing to loae by falsely denying your claim, delaying or refusing to deal with it. The 8% goes a tiny way towards balancing that.

        • Lady London says:

so your colleague is completely right. The elephant in the room is you can get judgment but the owing party still has to be around for you to actually get settlement.

      • Lady London says:

Not in MCOL= Small claims fees are very reasonable and returned when you win, as well as your case winings.

  • Ron says:

Hello, when booking Alaska flights using Avios, what fare bucket will the tickets (economy) in? Can I then do cash upgrade after? Thanks.

    • Sam Spill says:

I did cash upgrade at online check-in but can’t remember if that was possible before check-in.

Late news looks like Hilton had just retaliated to the Marriott attack on their Diamonds with a new offer

  • Seen8 says:

Can I fund my ISA (Vanguard) using the free Curve with no charge? Are there any limits?

It’s been a while since I used Curve and where once I saw a very skeptical HFP crowd claiming this company would fail and the fundraising made no sense, I now see multiple Metal subscribers and avid fans. What did I miss!?

    Thanks
