The HfP chat thread – Saturday 29th August

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/29/the-hfp-chat-thread-saturday-29th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I am having trouble finding how to send a message to Curve ‘support’ in the app.
Can someone point me in the right direction please?

    • avidsaver says:

At the bottom select “Account” , then select “Report a problem” – write message.

      • mark2 says:

I have not got that option in Android on phone or Bluestacks emulation of Windows. Apple only?

        • Peter K says:

          On Android:
Go to the bottom left to the account section. Click the “head &shoulders” icon top right which brings up your profile. Scroll down to the help button (a red ? In a circle) and click that. Top right you have 3 lines, click them. Button right you have a speech bubble in a teal circle, click it.

You can now write your message to support.

Does ‘Book with Confidence’ cover Amex Companion vouchers that have already been extended by 6 months? Have one expiring in November and wonder if I can book a trip but postpone it if FCO advice changes.

    • Anna says:

I think currently the only way of extending the voucher is to get a FTV which effectively (and hopefully!) extends it until April 2022.

      • Optimus Prime says:

Thanks, that’s what I thought: redeem my companion voucher and hope I can exchange it for a FTV if can’t fly.

        • Rob says:

I can see my wife booking a 241 to Manchester and then claiming a FTV, given the January expiry date on one of her vouchers.

  • Aston100 says:

Hello, is it possible to book an IHG hotel room (Crowne Plaza on this occasion) on points for someone else to stay at, and would they be able to claim the welcome drinks?

    Thanks.

    • Anna says:

I think you can book the room for them, but they are not supposed to get the status benefits if you’re not staying. I’ve never been asked for ID in a UK hotel but in another country where they would ask for your passport, this might cause issues.

    • Lumma says:

Didn’t get any welcome drinks at the Voco Oxford Spires Hotel, apparently due to COVID19

    • Lady London says:

The common way to try for this is you book in your name, put a note on the booking that your partner/brother/friend will arrive first, they check in and you hope for the best.

I think there’s a very good chance they would be handed the Welcome Drinks vouchers on checkin – but if not then personally I wouldn’t ask particularly in these times – you’ll notice Lumma said Voco did not offer.

Does not work in Spain where they apparently get serious about passport of the person booking etc., not sure if there are countries where this kind of risk exists but my understanding you’d be unlucky to have a problem in UK if you’re careful about it.

      • Genghis says:

With IHG call the call centre and they’ll make a booking in the actual name of the person that’s staying. No guarantee of benefits but IME they’re given (and welcome points received OK).

    • Chris Heyes says:

Book the room for you and another add other to booking by name
so he/she can check in instead of you
i do it all the time for my son or daughter if their going to a gig or show,
if queried they just say i was to ill to travel so granddaughters in my place
get points plus upgrade plus lounge, out of around 20 times only queried once
then just said hope he’s better soon lol

  • Lee says:

Got an offer on Gold card says earn 2 additional Points for every £1 of eligible spend. But in details it says Save to Card and get 2 MR Points for every £1 of eligible spend. How many points do I get, 2 or 3 (1 base + 2 additional)?

    • Genghis says:

🙂 I queried with Boots a few times on advantage as the bonus point offers said “bonus” whereas Boots wanted it to mean “this is what you get”. I argued each time that bonus meant “in addition” and got the points. Last time I properly checked they’d changed it.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Is this the one which says “additional MR point at selected Merchants”?

Earn 2 additional points at selected merchants for every £1 of eligible spend

I read that as get 3 per £1
