How to get Hilton Honors Diamond status in just nine nights, valid to March 2022

On Thursday we told you about the new Hilton Honors promotion for Autumn 2020.

Called ‘Double Rewards’, you will receive double base points AND double elite night credits.  This applies to stays between 8th September and 31st December 2020.

Our full article on Hilton’s ‘Double Rewards’ promotion, which includes the registration link, is here.

How does this help me get Diamond status in 9 nights?

Hilton Honors has been running a long-term status match programme.

It offers you top-tier Diamond status if you complete 18 nights within 90 days of registration, which is fairly tough.

However, whilst ‘Double Rewards’ is running, you earn TWO elite night credits for each night you stay. This means that you will only need nine nights in 90 days to reach Diamond.

Hilton status match

Are you sure this works?

Yes, it’s in the terms and conditions for ‘Double Rewards’:

Will the double night credit count towards Milestone Bonuses or rollover nights?

Yes – the double night credit will count towards Milestone Bonuses, fast tracks, and rollover nights.

I did this match myself in 2017 so I know how valuable it can be.  My Diamond status is still actually alive.  It was meant to expire in March 2019 but as a goodwill gesture it got rolled over as our spend in 2018 year was fairly high.  It was then meant to expire in March 2020 but has now been rolled over due to coronavirus.

How does the Hilton Honors status match work?

I will outline how the status match works below.  To summarise:

  • irrespective of your current status, you receive Gold for a 90 day trial period after you sign up
  • to keep Gold or Diamond to March 2022 you need to hit a specific number of nights (note nights, not stays) during the 90 days

How do I get a Hilton Honors status match?

Via this link, you can match your existing status with another hotel loyalty programme into Hilton Honors.  You must be at least ‘mid tier’ although Hilton will define at its discretion what counts from each particular scheme.

They definitely accept all of the major programmes shown in the dropdown menu on that page.  If you have status with a smaller scheme it may or may not be accepted.  I seem to remember that Wyndham Rewards is not accepted for some reason but don’t quote me on that.

The match rules are simple:

You will receive Hilton Honors Gold status for 90 days from the date of acceptance (usually 4-5 days after you email your request)

To keep Gold until March 2022, you need to complete 10 nights (cash, not reward) within the 90 days

To be upgraded to Diamond until March 2022, you need to complete 18 nights (cash, not reward) within the 90 days

As well as having status in another programme, you must also have evidence of a stay within the last 12 months with that programme.  If, for example, you have hotel status via Amex Platinum, you cannot submit a screen shot of an account with no activity.

Is a Hilton Honors status match worth doing?

Potentially, yes.

You can see the full list of Gold and Diamond benefits on this page of the Hilton website.

Hilton Gold is generally seen as the best mid-tier hotel status because it gets you free breakfast.  You don’t get free breakfast with IHG Rewards Club even if you are a top tier Spire Elite member!

Hilton Diamond comes with guaranteed lounge access, where the hotel has a lounge.  Again, good luck with that as an IHG elite member.

Timing is key, of course.

Once you are accepted, you get the benefits of Gold status for 90 days.  This could save you a LOT of money on breakfast if you are heading to a Hilton property later this year.

It is worth doing this even if you have no intention of completing the full challenge.  Free breakfast via Hilton Gold for a couple on a 3-night stay is likely to save close to £100.

If you are planning to do the full 5 (was 10) or 9 (was 18) nights in order to retain status until March 2022, you also need to be confident that you can squeeze them in.

There is a trade off here. Hilton status matches are meant to be ‘once per lifetime’. Whilst it is clearly easier to earn Diamond status, given that you only need nine nights in 90 days, will you get full benefit from it before March 2022?

Hilton status match

If you have specific hotels in mind, you should also research how they treat Gold or Diamond members.

Imagine you were planning to stay at Conrad New York next year for example.  The match is unlikely to benefit you much here:

Conrad New York has no executive lounge

American hotels in the Hilton chain tend not to offer good upgrades, because the country is awash with status members who receive it via the many Hilton credit cards

Even the basic rooms are suites (it is an all-suite hotel) so an upgrade isn’t even that important

You would get breakfast – breakfast is a la carte and you can choose from a small selection – but New York is not exactly short of options

In this scenario, you may prefer to trigger your status match another time when you know you will get better value.

  • Dooly says:

The refused my application for platinum on grounds that I am already a gold member and despite higher status in another chain. Seems only new members can match.

    • Tanmay Broachwala says:

Yeah, was gonna ask the same question. If I am already gold via Amex platinum, would completing 9 nights get me diamond?

      • Rob says:

Not if they are blocking Golds from doing the match as it appears, although I think this is short sighted of Hilton.

        • Harry T says:

I agree, Rob. I would happily spend 9 nights and a decent wad of cash at Hilton to progress from Gold to Diamond.

          • Sina says:

            +1

          • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Nine nights in the UK can be had for less than £400. Depending on future travel plans I would do this…. But I have no future travel plans.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Did you mean Diamond or are you talking about Marriott?

tbh both allow free transfers (Marriott has a 100k limit) so you could always open yourself a fresh account and then status match if you don’t have much previous stay history to lose (thinking lifetime stays/nights)

      • meta says:

This is a new moment as reported elsewhere. You cannot do a status match if you are Hilton Gold already.

  • Dr Kamran says:

I am an existing diamond member with Hilton – is there a way I can use the double rewards programme to extend my diamond to March 2022 with 9 stays?

    • Rob says:

No, but you will benefit from double elite night credits on other stays.

Your only Plan B is to open a new Hilton account, get Diamond on that and transfer your old points over via Points Pooling.

  • Ian Snowley says:

I’ve just been rejected for this as existing Gold – very shortsighted, buying new customers whilst ignoring existing loyal ones! I’ve applied for the Marriott Bonvoy challenge and if successful will move my upcoming 9 night stay from Hilton to Marriott!

    • Claudio says:

Dont give it up. They have just offered me to challenge 18 nights stay to diamond within 90.days ( I am also just a Gold member ). My way was on line Chat with them and asked for Fast-track to diamond. Such nice of them reminded me to register the promotion “DOUBLE REWARDS BONUS PROMOTION” before booking. Maybe you can give it a try.. FYI…

      • Tyra says:

Thank you Claudio, this worked for me. I ended up requesting a call back, as the online chat wasn’t working (even though I was ‘1’ in the queue). The Fast-track is dependant on how ‘loyal’ you are, so they will look at the account history before confirming you are eligible. With Covid, a lot of people may not have a lot of activity like me but it helped that I had a large amount of points. I also mentioned that Marriott was offering something similar. It’s worth a try for all those who have Gold through their Amex Platinum. Good luck!

        • Claudio says:

You are welcome, TYRA. I am very delighted that it worked for you.
Another better way is to request for Fast-track to Diamond in Nov 2020 and register “DOUBLE REWARDS BONUS PROMOTION”, and stay 8 Nights completed before 2020, then last 2N complete before Jan 2021, then the Diamond statu period for you until Feb 2023.

          • Tyra says:

The bulk of my stays are for the end of Sept (hopefully), so I’ve just missed out on having it for an extra year.

It would’ve been good if the article was updated to say HH Gold via Amex Plat wasn’t eligible as soon as it was known. I would’ve been much more strategic with requesting fast track

  • Jimbob says:

If I booked 2 rooms for 3 nights, do I get 6 or 12 night credits?

    • dezbez says:

I recently did the same and received 3 (albeit pre this offer), so in your case I would assume 6 not 12.
(I did however query this with the hotel, which said I should have received 6 and it is investigating further with HH. I’m not hopeful anything will come of it, but worth 5 mins of my time to ask.)

  • Green Plastic says:

I’ve been a silver with Hilton for years because of the old Visa card. So if I stay 9 nights before the end of the year, I’ll be Diamond?!

  • Dave says:

If I wait until we’re into October to do the 90 day status match, then stay 8 nights this year (ie 16 nights), then do 2 nights right at the beginning of Jan to trigger Diamond, will this mean I will be Diamond for the rest of the year (2021) and all the following year (2022), expiring in March 2023?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Normally the status match T&Cs will
Tell you exactly when it’s til. In general
A status match started this calendar year will expire the March two years later ie March 2022 regardless of when you complete the last of the required stays/nights

  • Londoner says:

Would it be possible to check in to a cheap Hilton for 9 nights and not stay for the duration and then just check out after 9 days? I have an expensive Hilton stay coming up next year and have no Hilton status currently, and a single room category upgrade would be worth more than 9 nights at a cheap Hilton. Just don’t want to stay at the hotel for the duration…

    • Lady London says:

      wanna do a deal?

      • Londoner says:

What type of deal are we talking here? Always interested in a good deal!

@Peter K. It is the Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa, which seems to be upgrading both gold and diamond members, however, I have read that some diamond members get double upgrades and we just wanted to enhance our chances of an upgrade as a diamond member plus the additional points earned.

        • Andy says:

Labriz offer great upgrades, I was only Silver and got upgraded from a Beach hut to private mountain villa with own pool and I didn’t even book it direct with Hilton.

        • GERRY says:

How do you get notified if accepted for match I’m currently gold applied a few days ago and no update as yet

    • Peter K says:

Check (eg on flyertalk) that the hotel you are going to is likely to upgrade you. Some seem to automatically, even for gold. Others don’t want to, even for diamond.

    • Erico1875 says:

Birmingham looks the cheapest. £35 for 2 OCT. Luton is £39

      • Rob says:

Should be fine BUT clear it with management first. Once cleaners realise you are not there they may assume you’ve left.

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Does this also qualify for lifetime status?
