Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 28th August

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/28/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-28th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I have a First class Avios booking for myself later this year. I also have an unused 241 voucher in my account.

Is it possible to add another person to the booking using my 241 and pay the extra taxes? There is First Avios availability on both dates.

    • Jonathan says:

It will be a cancellation & rebooking so £35 fee. Risk is if there is only 1 F Avios seat showing at the moment then you’re cancelled seat may not reappear as available for Avios.

    • ChrisC says:

Yes it is but you need to call.

When you do speak to an agent be very clear what you need them to do.

They can keep your current F seat for you whilst they add the extra person and apply the voucher.

Whilst in the background it is technically a cancel and rebook process in practice it’s not quite as black and white as that.

If you start your conversation with ‘I’d like to cancel by F seat please’ then they will and that is when you entetr the ‘will it go back into inventory’ lottery.

You need to start it by saying ‘I have an F seat already and would like to add another person and use a 2-4-1’

Sorry for the Curve related question, cash withdrawals in the UK from HSBC and Creation. Do either of these trigger a fee, it’s not something I usually do but will allow me to leave my savings until after an Ernie draw.

First day of the Scotland NC500 trip today, off to Holy Island on our way North, lovely day for it! Who pinched summer?

    • Paul says:

HSBC is fine in my experience.

    • Matt says:

Really don’t think apology should be necessary for curve questions… at the moment the vast majority of my miles and points are generated through it.
No fee for cash withdrawal with Creation.
      Enjoy your trip!

      • FFoxSake says:

Curve Blue has a £200 per calendar month UK limit before charges I thought? Is it never triggered?

        • Matt says:

Never say never, but many here have reported a fairly broad tolerance on that ‘limit’.
In any case it sounded like Craig was wanting some points for a smallish amount of cash for his trip (CC acceptance is quite high in Scotland 🙂 ) rather than planning a raid on every atm on the nc500 route.
Limit is pcm so Craig has timed his trip cannily.

        • Genghis says:

The charge has never been enforced but excess withdrawals have – I was banned for a bit.

    • Craig says:

      Thanks Guys.

    • Liz says:

We’ve just arrived in Ullapool for a 9 day break in our caravan. Lovely drive up the A9 today. Going to do the NC500 from Applecross to Durness over the next few days and just enjoy the lovely scenery.

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

Keep an eye out on Saturday for a green microlight – that’ll be me trying to fly the NC500 in a day!
No avios for this flight though!

  • Doug M says:

@JP_MCO. Did you get any confirmation from Virgin that the voucher did upgrade you from economy to UC?

  • YC says:

Potential Scenario – Cash flight to Greece on Friday, UK gov announces quarantine day before (Thursday pm). Will BA allow to cancel the flight for a FTV (inside 48hrs)?

    • AJA says:

I think you can apply for a FTV up to an hour before the flight departs. Not done it myself so don’t know for certain.

      • memesweeper says:

I did it with 12 hours to go on an Avios booking and it worked, I’d imagine the same logic works on the website for cash bookings

  • Matt says:

Data point- as a follow up to my question on Wednesday, paying for an IHG stay with curve+IHG black has posted as 4x points on my Creation dashboard.

  • Always_in_the_air says:

A question about GUF-2 voucher, i know that i can upgrade outbound and return and that it does not apply to other airlines, but i have a query, if i have a multi leg booking and some legs are not with BA can I still use the GUF-2 with all BA legs?

All legs would be booked through BA under one booking reference

  • DR says:

I normally receive my 241 voucher within the first 2 weeks of Aug (I have reached the required amount) is everything just running late?

    • Anna says:

OH and I both triggered ours in May/June and they appeared within 48 hours so it might be worth chasing up.

    • AJA says:

Have you logged into your BAEC account to check its not there already or are you just expecting an email confirmation? If it’s not there you should definitely chase BA and Amex.

  • KBuffett says:

Someone mentioned a Dyson Hairdryer this week. I’ve noticed Boots are offering 20 points per £1 on electrical today only online. That’s a good ‘discount’ on Dyson and better than John Lewis ‘Always Knowingly Undersold’
