Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 28th August

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/28/the-hfp-chat-thread-friday-28th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Am I right in thinking that an Avios booking made recently (under booking with confidence) can be moved to another date of my choosing (without BA cancelling the flight) free of charge, if there is Avios availability.

  • S879 says:

What happens if an airport lounge showing on the priority pass app is actually not open. Does Amex Platinum offer any compensation? Lounge at Bodrum Airport was closed when it was showing on the app.

    • Jonathan says:

No chance! Not Amex’s fault if the lounge is closed. More of a Priority Pass issue anyway & they haven’t been giving any customer service gestures for the huge number of their customers turned away from lounges due to “capacity” (or their unwillingness to pay a high enough price to lounges).

  • Lady London says:

Accor unfortunately nicked some from me, I could not believe it. But that”s Accor – look under every stone and you’ll find an Accor under it.

    • BJ says:

What have they done now? You’ve had more adventures in Accor than Alice had in Wonderland!

      • Lady London says:

1400 points disappeared from my account by manua adjustment. The only possible explanation is Accor thinks they expired. Given due to Covid most of us have been locked up for 5 months and travel is still looking hard forsome months ahead for everyone it’s mean of Accor to expire points from people’s accounts.

My status got extended which is why expiring points in my account does not make sense.

Accor customer support has never been able to right any wrong that was alady perpetrated wcen when they’ve agreed something was done wrongly.

Unfoetunately Accor hotels are often located conveniently when I an working and within clients budgets. I always try to stay somewhere else but sometimes get caught.

  • Travel Strong says:

Hungary have just adjusted their ‘traffic light’ system to rank *every* country Red, except Hungary which will be Green! Effectively banning all travel to Hungary – again.

Time to cancel my 4th rebooking.

    • Pangolin says:

And even the returning Magyars have to go into quarantine.

Ukraine has banned all foreigners too (until at least Sep 28).

Poland will have a ban on flights from 46 countries as of 2 Sep (it was originally going to be 63 countries from 1 Sep). The ban will include France, Spain and Croatia (most of the western balkans is on the exclusion list now). Poland was one of the countries which was quite generous in terms of which countries it left on the green list but that’s starting to change (still nowhere near as restrictive as it’s neighbour Lithuania though).

    • Pangolin says:

It may not be clear from the OP’s post or my reply, but the move by HU and UA is a total ban on entry for foreigners (apart from limited allowances such as diplomatic trips and freight transit, just as we saw during the initial lockdowns in March).

So this is not merely a requirement for quarantine on arrival, like other countries on a red list. If you’re not a citizen, you’re not getting in!

    • BJ says:

Stuff like this is why I’ve just given up on travels until at least December, and probably as far out as next spring. Just too much uncertainty frustration and disappointment.

  • Pangolin says:

A couple of things to mention (if they haven’t been mentioned already).

    1) The bonus nights in the Hilton Double Rewards promo *do* count for Lifetime status (confirmed by FT lurker).

    2) The weekend complementary night for AMB at IC is valid for both Regent and Kimpton till Dec 31.

    • BJ says:

Somebody posted on 1) yesterday but thanks for extra confirmation. Decision time 🙂

  • Boi says:

For the life of me I cant find this. Is there a maximum number of days for amex platinum car hire cover? Is 35 days too much?

  • Emily says:

Are there any insights into whether BA will update their onboard catering anytime soon? We redeemed a companion voucher for Club World and are due to fly in November. If we are able to fly I am hoping the menu will be changed by then!
