The HfP chat thread – Thursday 27th August

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/27/the-hfp-chat-thread-thursday-27th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Tom says:

Not sure if this has been mentioned previously but the Virgin upgrade/2-4-1 vouchers now do not need to be flown before the expiry, only booked by!

    • Ron says:

It needs to be booked and the first leg needs to have been flown before the voucher expires. States it in the Ts&Cs

      • Tom says:

I have been told by the Twitter team, WhatsApp service and over the phone that this is not the case…

I specifically asked if the first leg had to be flown by the expiry and was told:

“This is the case under normal circumstances, though due to the current travel bans and things outside of customers control, we are extending validity. The voucher just has to be used by the expiry date, you can travel after the expiry date of the voucher, you just need to book by the date.”

  • NB says:

BA are refusing to refund the full amount for a flight they cancelled. I booked WT then upgraded to WTP – they have kept £150 as a charge for making the seat upgrade. Any advice please?

    • Charlieface says:

EC261 claim seem to me a bit of a grey area. Contract might be stronger. Ultimately you contracted for WTP and they haven’t provided it.
Letter before action stating you will go to MCOL in 14 days. If you do go to MCOL don’t forget to claim costs and interest.

      • Lady London says:

        I think recovery of
previous change cost (to the flight BA cancelled) and seat reservation costs whenever a flight BA cancelled is refunded, will surely be won in court ending this unfair denial by British Airways.

The reason is that the change fee, alongside seat reservation and any other fees like extra baggage, were ‘integrated/incorporated’ into the flight bought. The fees could not have purchased anything if the flight was not purchased therefore they has no standalone value but they increased the value of the flight when what was purchased became incorporated into the ‘flight’.

It’s scummy of BA not to refund the change fee and please come back and tell us when you win.

        • Tom says:

I wonder if the case that a reader lost on not being refunded the seat choice fee has any useful notes from the judge. If BA cancel the flight how can they argue you are not due a full refund. Maybe a mistake?

          • Anna says:

If they write it into their Ts and Cs it might be a struggle to win as you have agreed to it when you paid for it. With selections fees for exit seats on long haul now at £93 pp for an exit seat, BA have a vested interest in keeping the money!

          • Charlieface says:

Unfair contract anyway (even when they don’ cancel the flight) because they can bounce you out the seat but you can’t refund. It probably wouldn’t stand up in court on a voluntary cancellation in any case, certainly not here on an invol.

          • TGLoyalty says:

            Unfair T&Cs are unenforceable.

I could write “you owe me £100 if we cancel on you” on a website but doesn’t mean you’ll win in front of a judge.

    • Louise K says:

I booked flights with Emirates last year that I then changed twice. Due to fly to DXB over Easter which was of course cancelled and my credit note was the for the original amount I paid.

  • AJA says:

I just got an email from BA Holidays reminding me of the car hire (Avis through BA with a BA booking ref) I had separately booked for my now cancelled Tenerife trip. I had completely forgotten I’d booked it. Can I get a FTV for the booking? It was non-refundable. There doesn’t seem to be the ability to cancel online. Do I need to do anything as I am obviously not going?

    • Lady London says:

surely if BA Holidays cancelled any part of a BA Holiday then the whole lot was supposed to be refunded to you within 7/14 days?

      • AJA says:

No. My flights were reward seats using Avios and a 2-4-1. I booked the car hire separately via BA afterwards. I didn’t realise it was even classed as a BA Holidays booking until I got the reminder email today!

The flights were cancelled and rebooked from LGW to LHR a month ago. I took advantage of the flight cancellation / move to LHR to get my Avios and 2-4-1 back. I had forgotten about the car hire until I got the email!

    • JanH says:

I had a similar situation. Car hire in Canada booked with Avis through BA. Flights cancelled by BA so I input car hire ref number into FTV and received email within a day to say I had full credit for the booking.

  • Liz says:

Is anyone having trouble getting in to the Revolut app – trying to reset my pin as it always says it’s not correct when it is – put in phone number for a reset and it wont let me past the phone number page – tried using with a 0 in front and not – getting nowhere.

    • Optimus Prime says:

Working for me. There’s a new version released today (at least for iPhone). Have you tried upgrading/reinstalling it?

  • Anuj says:

Has anyone ever got a email from creation saying their account has been restricted ? Apparently it’s part of fraud prevention to confirm transactions, seems a bit odd to block me from logging in and from making any transactions. I haven’t done any MS or missed any payments. But I do have it attached to curve.

    • Anna says:

Have you tried logging in to make sure it’s not a phishing email? I’ve been getting codes texted from Creation to access my account, but my OH hasn’t, so not sure what’s going on.

  • Binks says:

I just received an email from Virgin stating that in December they will be flying to Islamabad and Lahore – great result for me. Will be able to make good use of my stash of points!

  • Binks says:

Also makes the paid for Virgin cc more interesting now.

  • New Card says:

Why are BA and Virgin suddenly putting on routes to Islamabad and Lahore? Virgin have announced today, and this suggests BA are imminent: https://www.dawn.com/news/1576604/british-airways-seeks-permission-to-operate-flights-to-lahore

    • New Card says:

Found the answer to my own question minutes after posting: “The core reason for launching these now is the temporary absence of Pakistan International because of its EU ban until next year, which has created a clear and large gap.”

      • Rhys says:

PIA is operating flights to the UK using a wet leased aircraft, so this is incorrect. I have a few more reasons in my article tomorrow 😉

        • Anna says:

          Who’s piloting them?!

        • New Card says:

I’d rather they were putting on more flights to Mauritius and the Maldives frankly! But I can see this might be good for some with friends and family.
