The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 25th August

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

HFP-Wordmark-Black

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/25/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-25th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Seychelles Booked in November? I am not holding out much hope that it will open up to the UK and for some reason it’s still on the fco no fly list! Is Barbados the only other possibility?

    • TGLoyalty says:

I read they’ve just opened up to a number of countries including Portugal, which at the moment still has a slightly higher infection rate than the UK.

There’s hope UK could go on within the next few weeks if it carries on as is here.

  • Zoe says:

I remember some changes a while back, am I right in thinking that I can’t bowl a curved ball between Brighton and Necker anymore?
Was it due to the Necker card?

    • ChrisBCN says:

You don’t need to talk in code !

      • TGLoyalty says:

Don’t need to but it was a decent bit of code

      • AJA says:

You’re probably right. Must be too complicated to decipher especially as no one has answered the question so far. Unfortunately I don’t know the answer but I would love it if someone who does could answer in code 🙂

      • dezbez says:

It’s like doing a crossword puzzle!

    • Scott says:

If I have deciphered correctly then no you can’t unless it is a metal ball

    • Connor says:

      Still works mate.

    • Niall says:

I think I can decipher this, but what does American Seagull mean? So funny this stuff!

      • Doug M says:

Brighton and Hove Albion are the Seagulls and play at the Amex Stadium.

      • Lady London says:

I am not an expert but if there’s a problem I think it would be at the gulls end. Ensuring all apps are latest version might help.

Have seen comment on here that adding fruit to your meal can make some transaction combos digest easier.

        • Travel Strong says:

I feel like i’m the only one still addicted to blackberries

      • AJA says:

That’s just reminded me of the classic Eric Cantona quote “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.” In the above we can deduce that Brighton is the seagulls and the trawler is Necker Island and the sardines are the curve ball. Does the trawler bounce the curve ball back to the seagulls?

  • Gavin says:

I know this is dumb but can’t remember: am staying at the Thistle LHR T5 (the one that accesses T5 via the Parking Pods) but have only done stay-then-fly; not fly-then-stay.

Rob did an informative article on stay-then-fly here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2018/03/10/using-pods-to-get-from-thistle-heathrow-to-terminal-5/ When you stay-then-fly, you pay your £5 to get the access code for the gate, and then take the pod. So far so good.

When you fly-then-stay, what happens? Is it effectively free to let yourself in through the gate? Thanks

    • Matt says:

You need a code to get back to the hotel. If you’re lucky you can tail gate someone else through. If not (or your ethics insist) then you ring the buzzer, they let you through and then you pay up at reception.

      • ankomonkey says:

Or you can talk to them in code through the intercom. “The seagull has just thrown a curve ball on Neckar island and it landed in the vanilla pod pile near the thistle bushes. Over.”

    • Lady London says:

Was at LHR T5 3 days ago and saw a sign that pods are not running.

    • Doug M says:

I don’t think the PODs are working at the moment.

  • JohnT says:

New Site design – Search? – Can there be a choice of sequence for the results? Not sure if currently by “relevance” but should be option to sort by descending date please? I would say mostly you are after something seen recently?

  • Ron says:

Do BA release extra Avios seats (on top of the usual 2CW) at 1am? Or do I have to check throughout the day? Thanks.

    • Matt says:

Seems to be at random times. Definitely worth thinking about using Seatspy.com – they’ll send you alerts when/if seats become available

      • Ron says:

I was going to do that, but for some reasons seatspy only search up to 22/7, but BA is releasing 14/8 already. Also, not sure why seatspy is showing there are two CW on 22/7, but there isn’t on BA.com. I may just need to keep checking myself on BA.com

      • Anna says:

Seatspy and Reward Flight Finder are up the spout at the moment, don’t rely on them!
Extra avios seats being released is a bit random and you do need to check regularly.

        • Ron says:

Glad I’ve been checking today, it seems BA has released a lots of CW seats for Aug21 from US to London today. Booked 4 CW from SEA for Aug21 and it should be Club Suite too!

  • CC says:

I’ve applied for a refund on seat selection being cancelled by BA due to change of aircraft, but I see now that the claim needs to be made within 30 days after the flight, so will I still get this refund if I cancel the flight? It was on a companion voucher.

  • Soloflyer1977 says:

Hi, I am trying to make a reward booking on Avios.com (Aer Lingus flight). Sufficient avios to cover it. When I click on payment, it say that it can’t go through because the cookies are not enabled – cookies are enabled. I’ve tried on Chromebook and mobile – both with the same error. Is there a way to resolve it?

  • Raj says:

Just received an email from Amex on double Membership Rewards points on spending at Aldi, deliveroo, Esso, Superdrug and Currys/PC World for 3 months (until 21 November 2020). Don’t know if it’s targeted or open to everyone who has an Amex card that collects MRs.
