The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 25th August

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/25/the-hfp-chat-thread-tuesday-25th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

For anyone with LNER vouchers from Nectar, and who has had the expiry date extended…check to see what you have been given. I only just realised mine were extended and converted into vouchers covering any train journey instead of the restrictions of LNER Advance singles

    • Munch says:

How close were your vouchers to expiring? I have a large amount expiring in December which I’ll never use in time. How long did they extend them for?

      • Sloth says:

They extend them by 12 months from the date you contact them. I did it via twitter, sent them a message and the they will ask you to DM and provide details

    This may be old news…
just been charged interest for paying amex through my barclaycard via curve :S
Any one experienced this?I thought this was legit and wouldnt incur any charges. Intending to question it.
Looking for advice on other people’s experiences

    • Ali M says:

I have made payments over the last few months for my amex and didnt think I was doing anything illegal :/ Can they slap a sudden charge without any intimation a few months later?

      • Jonathan says:

You don’t have a leg to stand on here I’m afraid. Clearly meets the definition of a cash like transaction in the same way as a money transfer service or forex provider.

Paying credit with credit is also a no no so if you value your future relationship with Barclays I’d take it on the chin rather than protest!

      • Ashish says:

        This is HH card?

    • Anna says:

Is it interest on the Barclaycard or a charge on Curve free card? The latter has been well publicised over the last few months.

  • rk says:

BA OB points extended by 6 months

    Travel data point:
Prague is the emptiest I’ve ever seen it. The only tourists appear to be European and domestic. It’s a joy compared to the usual summer crush.

Also, the Augustine hotel is easily one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at. Excellent, novel hard product. Kind and helpful staff. Sensible covid precautions (masks, hand sanitiser, social distancing). Also, their breakfast costs about £10 per person at the moment including drinks, hot cooked breakfast, juice, cereal etc. The location is perfect for exploring Prague – pretty much any major tourist attraction is 15 mins walk away.

As a Bonvoy Gold booking a “thank you healthcare heroes” rate (less than half the flexible rate) I was upgraded from a classic room to a large deluxe room with a phenomenal bathroom. There was also a welcome gift of Prague chocolates and a bottle of the monastery’s own beer (a very decent stout). I asked for a late checkout and was offered up to 4pm (I needed 3pm and was given it). Themed cocktails, Hugo spritz, G&T were excellent. Bar food was tasty and presented beautifully. Overall an excellent experience in an almost empty hotel.

However, Czechia is likely to have its FCO exemption removed this week, sadly.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Sounds like you had a great time. Shame about its exemption going away if it does.

Though the government might need to reassess their threshold as it doesn’t sound like hospital admissions are growing in Spain / France etc

      • Harry T says:

Thank you, I hope you get the chance to sample the Augustine at some point.

It will be a real shame for Czechia if it gets removed from the exemption list. I talked to the Czech gentleman who did our walking tour and he told me that their numbers on the tours are 20% of last summer.

The relatively low rate of hospital admissions and deaths is interesting. There’s a decent piece on it in the FT. I do think that the hospital treatment has improved, and the infected people are now mostly younger. Guess time will tell. The UK numbers seem very good at the moment, so I think the government is scared of infection coming from abroad. Politically, they cannot be seen to react slowly or carelessly.

        • TGLoyalty says:

But it does seem very political rather than based upon the facts like they have always claimed they acted.

  • Nigel W says:

Hi all, just checking is 30th Sept the deadline to activate the extended 2-4-1 Amex BA voucher?

  • meta says:

Anyone else having issues with booking award seats on BA? I keep getting error message when I click on book with Avios. I tried on app, desktop as well different browsers.
