The HfP chat thread – Sunday 23rd August

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/23/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-23rd-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Arrived in Bodrum yesterday and hotel asked to pay for an upgrade upfront. Used Curve but didn’t realise it was a Saturday and my currency was somehow set as USD. Can I go back in time and make any changes? I don’t need to change the card I’d linked too.
Any way to avoid FX fees too? Got charged around £20.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Only way is to ask hotel to refund and re process but you might lose a little on the usd exchange rate on the underlying card charge/refund.

  • Drolmala says:

Whatever happened to the partnership between IHG and Mr & Mrs Smith?

    • Rob says:

      Still coming ….

      • RussellH says:

Many references to Mr & Mrs Smith hotels ‘coming soon’ last week. Look for Oxford, say.

    • Rupert says:

Are there any issues currently paying Brighton with a curve metal? Keep getting the authorise via the app and nothing happens on the curve app or it gets declined.

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Worked fine this morning.

Do you have the latest of both apps?

Make sure curve app isn’t actually on the screen as the notification pops in notification centre. I also get the option to verify via text or email if I pay using the Amex app.

Hi, for anyone who has had their flights cancelled by BA and would like a cash refund, a quick way to get it is through the chat application on the website. I was able to chat with an advisor on Friday evening and received my refund on my credit card this morning. No need to call and wait for ages. Was pleasantly surprised as previously had to be on hold for hours and then wait weeks for other cancelled flight refunds. Apologies if this is well known but I was unaware of this method.

    • zark says:

I mistified. Webchat on BA website.
      Does this exist?
If so, how does one find it?

      • Rob says:

Others have mentioned this, I’ve never seen it either!

        • Adam Brown says:

I was checking the exact conditions for a voucher and the chat option popped up. It starts as a chat bot put you can transfer to an adviser.

          • Rob says:

The ‘popping’ bit could be the issue, given that many browsers now block them.

        • ChrisBCN says:

Probably they only show it to X% of visitors to the site (or a subset of exec club members), either because they are testing to see the impact of it (does it reduce call volumes amongst the group they are testing) or to capacity control the volumes to their chat agents.

          • Adam Brown says:

Couldn’t reply direct to your message Rob for some reason. Some browsers do block them but just was on screen like any other chat option. I was in my phone rather than computer

  • RussellH says:

The red start at page 1 link is not working – 404 error

  • Dev says:

Hi all, wondering if anyone can advise when BA will be going back to their usual food/drinks menu?
New boxed options for club and first are ridiculous!

    • Rob says:

I was told it would change in September but this was 2 months ago.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Nothing but a penny saving move if you can do a drinks service you can return the the old one tray meal service.

    • Peter North says:

Monday October 26th is what I heard.

  • George K says:

Hey folks – I’m trying to figure out if Shangri-La has a 24-hour cooling off period for new non-refundable bookings where you can cancel during that time (Marriott does this, for example). The T&Cs are not clear, but the booking terms say that any cancellation will forfeit the payment, so wanted to ask if anyone has experience with cancelling a non-flex booking without charge..

  • Heather says:

FCO advice means Amex Platinum insurance not valid for upcoming trip to Spain but is the CDW cover also cancelled?

    • Genghis says:

      What do the terms say?

      • yorkieflyer says:

From my reading its ambiguous in my view, but it may well not.
This whole business of FCO advice against non essential travel invalidating insurance needs looking at by insurers. Advice against non essential travel always used to be targeted quite precisely against risks in specific regions e.g. Turkish border areas of Iraq and so on. Now it’s become a blunt tool of UK government policy to attempt to curtail travel in alignment with the 14 day quarantine policy

  • Simon Schus says:

    Hi all.

What are the flight loads like in Y with BA from LHR-JFK?

I’m booked in for October 2020 and I’m eligible to entry to the USA. However, there is a tiny economy cabin (like ten rows) on a BA777. Already a few seats booked in a much condensed cabin so I’m concerned it’ll be busy, a complete contrast to my LHR-IAD flight.

    • ChrisBCN says:

Doesn’t matter if it’s busy or empty, you are far more likely to catch anything at the airport (including the bridge) than you are by any persons sat next to you. If you must travel, then just take the regular precautions, it’s pointless worrying how many people will be on the plane.
