The HfP chat thread – Sunday 23rd August

Links on Head for Points may pay us an affiliate commission. A list of partners is here.

We have decided to run this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HfP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/23/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-sunday-23rd-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

If you have a Amex plat reward card , if you apply for the nectar Amex card will you get the sign up bonus or not , as I have read that Amex are stricter now and you don’t get the bonus on a second card

  • you've insulted my wife damn you! says:

I really like the new format HFP, but not as much as these two. Posts since the revamp. The winner is…. drum roll please…… a worthy second place Anna on 30 posts, and Lady London on a whopping 51 posts.

  • stevenhp1987 says:

Just checked into the Crowne Plaza in Newcastle. Got a club lounge, but the lounge is closed.

They are not even offering free breakfast in the bar as an alternative! Seems some hotels are using covid as an excuse to cost cut.

    • Anna says:

Is that reflected in the room price though? Some CPs are an absolute steal at the moment, which wouldn’t be viable if the club lounge was being provided. Some aren’t though, which make the lack of lounge, pool etc, more annoying!

      • stevenhp1987 says:

It was a redemption so I’m not too bothered.

Did pay more points for it though… That’s what’s jarring.

Would have taken the amenity drink in lieu, but they offered points only which, unusually, have not posted yet.

        • TGLoyalty says:

If the bar is open they should be providing the drinks voucher. I’d complain.

    • John says:

They stopped offering lounge access to spire a year or so ago

  • KBuffett says:

I mentioned yesterday that John Lewis are always knowingly undersold. Today I’ve ready they are ditching their false slogan! They are an undeservingly hyped up retailer.

    • Doug M says:

Never found anything special about them, and some really poor experiences, including being told to buy it where it was cheaper when mentioning the never knowingly undersold policy.
Having some knowledge of being a supplier to them makes them a very hard business to be positive about.

      • Louise K says:

        I agree.

A few years back we had to furnish an entire new home – sofas, beds, mattresses, lights, lamps, cabinets, kitchen ware and so on.

At least half of it went back or had to be replaced. Ridiculous.

    • Pangolin says:

This is a big deal and I’m surprised not to see more comment on this (HFP article coming up tomorrow?).

Hilton are giving double elite night credits as well as double points!

      • TGLoyalty says:

The registration link is broken and it doesn’t start u til September 8th so id hold onto the excitement for now.

    • ChrisC says:

Please just don’t post a link. Yyou really need to write a couple of lines to say what the link is about / offering.

    • mr_jetlag says:

Clicking on Register gets a 404, so I wouldn’t get too excited just yet.

  • DJ says:

    Hi all,

What’s your opinion on the Lloyds Avios credit card? Is it worth keeping still? I have Amex and the HSBC card, so just wondering if there is any reasons to keep the card now.

    Thanks

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

      One good reason:

If you want any new credit in the foreseeable future, you’ll find it very hard.

So worth keeping active with a transaction every few months.

      • guesswho2000 says:

“If you want any new credit in the foreseeable future, you’ll find it very hard.”

Why exactly? I get there’ll be a level of tightening of banks’ belts given these times, but surely if personal circumstances are unchanged it won’t be that much more difficult?

Genuinely interested, as I have a stack of unused cards now, and have been wondering what to do with them, 2x from Lloyds (inc. the Avios card), included.

  • Pid says:

if you need to cancel a one way avios ticket, do you get charged the full £35 cancellation fee or do you just loose the taxes paid which would only be £17.50?

    • Rob says:

Some talk recently of the call centre insisting on the full £35 by making you pay the extra but it has gone very quiet on this score. If you could cancel online, which you can’t, it would only be £17.50.

  • Kate says:

Hi folks, I’m a (recent, via Zoom U) MD/PHD, long planning move to Cambridge for a postdoc and work for the NHS on a COVID-related project. Finally, my visa has been granted but now flights are right expensive. HELP? I need two bags and have no clue how to game the system because I’m an American with no culture, flight or car experience (but a great cyclist, which I’m told will help my assimilation)
