Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

CHANGED: You now only have three months to trigger American Express sign-up bonuses

Since the start of May, American Express had been giving people six months – rather than the usual three months – to hit the spending target required to earn the sign-up bonus on a new card.

This offer has now ended.

As of today, you will need to hit your spend target within three months.

This returns the rule to how it was before the start of the coronavirus lockdown.  With consumer spending almost back to normal – Barclaycard data for July 2020 shows card spending was just 2.9% lower than July 2019 – American Express presumably feels that it no longer needs to make concessions.

American Express three month sign-up bonus rule

Anyone still waiting for Amex referral points? Partner referred me from an Amex platinum to an Amex platinum business card in June. I’ve now spent the 6k and received the 45k opening bonus (which indicates I was referred). Still no sign of the referral points. Do I have to get my partner to call up? How have others received missing points? Thanks

    • Wally1976 says:

My wife received no points for referring me from personal gold to business gold at beginning of June. Have only just been able to raise it as a proper complaint as they make you wait until 10 weeks have elapsed. I’m not optimistic of ever seeing the points.

Rob has mentioned previously that there’s a known problem with referrals to business platinum but Amex won’t admit it.

      Good luck!

BLT@ i did 5/6 referrals end May from Platinum 3 to gold 2 to BA Premium,
all bar one came good (they all applied in June) although all at different times
The one missing when i phoned i was told didn’t go through my link
When i phoned (Brighton) told them i had the email i’d sent them (and knew gone through link)
they accepted it and manually added missing points no problem good service

      • BLT says:

Thanks both. Will sort it by live chat. It really is annoying when it doesn’t work. Luckily I took a screenshot of the referral page prior to the application
