The new HFP chat thread – Friday 14th August

We have decided to run this new daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HFP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

By default, HFP shows the last page of comments under the article.  If you want to see the first page of comments and read them all from beginning to end in order, click here: https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2020/08/14/the-new-hfp-chat-thread-friday-14th-august/comment-page-1.  The page will refresh with this article but the comments will now show the first page and not the last page.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HFP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

For those who like to violate terms and conditions:

Topping up and transferring £8k in 40 days was enough to leave a certain banking app revolted with my behaviour.

Got a warning message in the app. Stop using us to earn points or we’ll shut you down.

      Metal, Premium or Pleb?

    • Rossy says:

Were you literally bank transferring balances straight back into your current account?

      • VivaLaRevolution says:

        No, none to my account.
A little spending, a little ATM, and mostly paying CC accounts by card or by transfer.

Always been fine at lower levels but done about double the previous usual in the past month+.

    • memesweeper says:

Glad to hear you at least got a warning.

    • Anna says:

I think we need a 2nd account in my OH’s name.

Does anyone know if I can add a minor to an adult RFS Booking online as cannot get through to call centre? Thanks

    • BS says:

Child under 2 for your lap, then yes. If they want their own seat or are >2y, then no – they will need their own booking, but make sure it is linked to the parents’ booking to ensure they sit together.

Anyone had experience of trying to get a refund from a Singapore Accor hotel? The global policy said that you could have a refund for an advance purchase stay and the Swissotel confirmed this when I emailed them and said the refund would take up to 21 days to process. 5 weeks later still no refund. Contacted them to chase and was basically told I have to keep waiting but this time no notification on how long it would take to get done.

Should I hang tight and wait or go straight to my credit card company?

Try once more politely. Tell them if the money isnt back in your account wuthun 7 days you will do a chargeback on your card.

Merchants really, really dont like this as ut seems chargebacks ding their record with card companies meaning cards will hold money rather than pay it to them, for much longer periods than normal in future as surety.

      • meta says:

Plus there is an extra fee charged to merchant ranging from £50-100 per chargeback depending on the card used.

  • Stuart H says:

Hi, i might have missed it being reported but has the 1 tesco point per £1 spent on fuel at tesco petrol stations using tesco credit card as the clubcard been changed…. I got 1 point per £2 spent yesterday

  • Nick G says:

I have an Amex gold coming up to 12 month mark so need to refer my wife for her to gain the new card to prevent the £140 fee.

She was previously a card holder before I took over last year. Am I right in thinking I get no bonus for referring her?

  • Nick G says:

Currently an Amex gold card holder coming up to my 12 months so want to refer my wife to prevent the £140 fee. She was previously a gold card holder last year before I took over (so within 24 months)

Am I right in thinking I get no bonus for referring her?

    • Rob says:

You will get a bonus for referring her, but she won’t get a bonus when accepted.

  • FFoxSake says:

    James mentioned yesterday:
“With Curve the recycling is endless really… IHG > VA > MBNA > VA > IHG”
Just tried paying VA bill via Blue Crv… first with underlying MBNA and then IHG… both declined.
Was the earlier comment for Metal only?

  • SPanch says:

Got an email offering the following:

From 6 August to 1 October 2020, if you choose to use your Membership Rewards points to pay for almost any item on your Card statement, you’ll receive a huge 50% boost to their value! From the weekly shop to a weekend treat, Use Points towards Purchases and see them go so much further.3

    Worth using paying for points?
